Chapter 8 - save him, not me

Charlie and Zachary's bodies laid against the cold grass, staining the bright and beautiful green grass with a dark red puddle of blood. Maya ran up to Charlie, her body working faster than her mind. Her knees slid across the grass, landing nearly on top of Charlie's almost lifeless body. Her eyes frantically wander over his body trying her best to find the source at which the blood was coming from.

Maya's tears slowly began to fall down her cheeks, landing on Charlie. "Charlie." Maya barely was able to choke out. Her fingers brushed over the open wound on his upper abdominal area that ran down his stomach curving towards his lower back.

Charlie weakly reached up to grab Maya's hand, holding it. "I'm right here." The smile seemed more painful then Charlie had intended. Maya tilted her head releasing an extremely loud sob. Noah was already dead, no questioning it.

Hazel was beside Zac, trying her best to keep his eyes open. Hazel and Zac had a thing going on and neither of them were ready to lose the other.

Charlie turned his head looking at Noah's dead and lifeless body, then his eyes wandered over to the two instantly feeling guilty. As if he were the one to put Zac in this state. "Help Zac." Charlie said to Maya, trying to run his thumb of her knuckles.

Maya looked at Charlie as if he had gone mad. "I don't think so. If I am helping anyone, it's you, Charlie." Maya said her voice started to shake as she began to cry again.

"Maya, I'm not a-asking you. I am telling you. Help him, he helped me after all. I would be dead if it weren't for him." Charlie firmly stated before releasing an awful cough.

Maya's face softened as she looked between Charlie and Zac who was way worse than Charlie. "Fine, but don't you die on me, dammit." Maya said before rushing over to Zac after kissing Charlie's temple.

Charlie laughed bitterly to himself. "I wish I could promise you that, Maya." He whispered before closing his eyes, breathing becoming shallow.

Hazel looked at Maya funny when she sat down next to her placing her hands on Zac's stomach. "What are -"

"Let me work, yeah?" Maya asked her eyes were a dark shade of blue as a rush of energy rammed into her body. A bright white light had surrounded Maya and slowly began to grow larger and larger within every second that Maya continued her doing.

Hazel moved back, her eyes widened in shock. She had no idea that Maya could do what she was doing. This whole supernatural thing was still new to her and two out of her three best friends were apart of the world that she thought only exsited in books.

Zachary's wounds had slowly started to close, leaving a nasty scar in memory. Maya sealed her eyes shut as she knitted her eyebrows together, tightly, trying her best to focus on saving a person. Some of Zac's pain entering her body making it hard for her to continue. Shallow breathing began to even out, his once limbed body now becoming more structured and stabled.

His pale skin turned back into the beautiful golden brown color that it once was. His sunken in eyes with dark purple bags underneath simply vanished. Maya removed her hands off of Zac's body, the intense light that had once evolved every ounce of Maya and Zachary's body had completely faded, the darkness once again swallowing them.

Maya opened her eyes and looked over Zac's body, seeing if it had worked. Hazel threw her arms around Maya, thanking her a million times over again. Maya hurried to remove Hazel's arm to rush back over to Charlie whose body was peacefully laying in the grass. Trying to stand up Maya felt a rush of dizziness enter her head, making her unbalanced, yet that didn't stop her from running towards Charlie at full speed.

Hazel was so wrapped up in what was going on with Zac that she didn't notice that Charlie's condition, which was ten times worse than his. Maya dropped back down on her knees, placing her ear on his chest, checking to see if he was breathing. Maya couldn't be happier to feel his chest move underneath her. "Charlie?" Maya called out to him, reaching for his hand, grabbing it and holding it tightly.

"I'm still here." He answered, hardly getting his voice above a whisper. A small smile broke out on her face from hearing Charlie's voice. His chocolate brown eyes peeled themselves open trying to get one last peek at Maya's face.

Maya sucked her bottom lip into her mouth as she felt the tear welling up in her eyes once again. "I should've saved you. I shouldn't have just let you die like this, Char. I should've done something to help you, instead, I decided to listen to you and help someone who isn't important to me."

Charlie shook his head. "It was the right thing to do."

"Screw the right thing to do!" Maya yelled as she let go for Charlie's hand and pulled at the roots of her hair. "Everyone gets to live a happy ever after, and what do we get? Huh, Charlie. Enlighten me, please. I want to know what type of ending we get. You die and I live the rest of my life in misery? Happy fucking ever after to the dumb girl who listened to her dying best friend to save someone else. I can't lose you, Char. You mean way to much to me then you tend to think. Way too much." Maya's voice was in a low hiss.

Charlie drank in Maya's words while his eyes wandered over her face. "What are you trying to say, Maya?" He asked, his eyes locking with hers.

Maya held Charlie's stare as she sucked in a deep breath, "I fell for you Charlie, way too hard." Maya answered as she looked down at Charlie hand that was in her lap. Picking up his hand, Maya began to play with his fingers to comfort herself, a habit she's had since they were younger.

Charlie smiled at Maya, "I love you, too, Maya." He said pulling his hand away from her and placing it on her check. Maya looked up at Charlie to see tears streaming down his face. Maya closed her eyes and leaned into Charlie's hand. His thumb swiped away her stray tears that fell, just enjoying his last few moments he has left with Maya. "Thank you, Maya, for everything, just know that I'll always be with you, no matter what."

Charlie let out a series of nasty coughs, spitting up blood in the process. It pained Maya to see Charlie like this. "Char, you're not leaving me, not now." Charlie smiled weakly at Maya, closing his eyes as his hand fell from her check. It happened in slow motion, everything just seemed to stop to Maya. Her eyes widened as she looked down at Charlie's now lifeless body. "Charlie, please. Don't do this to me, please. Please. Please. Please. Don't leave me like this, please. Charlie? Charlie?!" Maya placed her hands on Charlie's shoulders and lightly shook him. "Char?" Maya stopped shaking him. "Please, wake up. I need you. You can't do this to me. Charlie!" Maya cried loudly as small arms wrapped themselves around Maya.

Hazel pulled Maya as close as she possibly could, rocking her back and forth as they sat there and cried together. Hazel didn't fall in love with Charlie, but he was definitely like a brother to her and would miss him like crazy. "Shh." Hazel tried to sooth Maya. Yet nothing was working. Maya continued to release loud cries of pain as she stared at Charlie's lifeless body.

"...I'll be with you no matter what."
