Chapter 21 - The World of Chance

Zimmer was panting out hot air and mist. He was charging through thick jungle undergrowth. Behind him and in front of him, angry yelling and screaming of a human-like nature can be heard. Primitive arrows and spears were flying in all directions, aimed straight for him. But Zimmer has great accuracy and luck and they just wizz past him. He then hears it. The sound of a truck being revved up combined with a sound of a sick man clearing his throat.

A T-Rex is loose in the jungle.

Cursing under his ragged breath and ripped clothing Zimmer recounts that he and his group of thieving poachers were exploiting this land taking exotic animals, treasures, trinkets from the land as well as in the ruins. They followed a ancient treasure map, which was carried by the now dead leader. But when they entered what they and Zimmer thought was a entrance to a pyramid, they were ambushed by the local tribes, furious of having their land exploited by outsiders. Zimmer and a few others managed to escape and take a few things,a ancient set of dice,a deck of unusual tarot cards, a few miniature figurines,a tablet of some sort, what appears to be poker chips and a set of ancient darts. They fled out of the pyramid and fleeing for their lives past their ruin of a campsite, past the dead guards and into the deep undergrowth. Zimmer lost sight of them, but he knew he had to be the first one their because he knew if they got their first he would die because the team would leave him and be at the mercy of the natives. He knew that it was a race against his competitors .And he also knew that if he were to survive this he would turn his back on crime and become as new. No more thievery and crawling through grottos, he's going to retire.

Then suddenly around a huge tree which now has a tomahawk, twenty arrows and five spears where his body was, he sees it. The boat, and off in the distance a wooden ship. Before leaving the group managed to arrange a way to get back to base quickly, by getting a 'travel agent' . He was to be promised a cut of the profits. Zimmer looked back and he saw two of his 'associates' who were running on the shore towards him. Their shouting did little to convince him to help, but their treasure will. So he gets ready to take off. And that's when they too help him take off and they row into the distance. Two paddling and one keeping watch of the shore for any hostiles. Just when he gives up he sees out in the distance. A arrow thinks him between the eyes. He slumps forward and off the boat into the water. The two survivors work harder. And they manage to row all the way back to the docks to the floating Ruins of Giants.

Where beasts, monsters, demons, angels and other unspeakable horrors were once worshipped and revered. A city that was literally made by giants. But of what appearance these giants are nobody knows. As this land has been known to hold and hide dangerous secrets that haven't been known since millions of millennia. Without magic, at times even maps are useless. As something about this land seems almost to be alive and intelligent. Therefore making it treacherous to cross. Storms of fire rain down the sky from out of the clear sky.People of the surest and perceptive kind have been known to fall unknowingly into quicksand, where they were sure none were their. Snowstorms billow onto warm plains. Rivers have unpredictable currents. Trees appear and disappear in the forest ,changing layout. Mist appears in the arid deserts in broad daylight. And what's worst are the nameless predators that hunt during the day but mostly during the night. People often have morbid arguments over which is more deadly the terrain and weather or its creatures, nobody can come to a consensus.

Their is a legend of a mad god, who came to this world. Nobody knows how or why but it is said he was mad. For whatever reason he built laboratories and temples all over the world. Then he set about claiming leadership over all who lived. He would have his followers build giant floating citadels, elaborate arenas and shrines to hideous gods. Shrines who he often filled with relics, some of which he created and stored to be idolized by his servants. Then one day he vanished. And that is when alien beings came and destroyed much of the world the mad mage created. The mad mage had vanished. Nightmarish towers sunk into the ocean and cities were overrun by the aliens. While the buildings and creatures still stand all of it is in ruin. Most cities are no longer used and inhabited. Those that remained in their cities have devolved back to being primitive. Oftentimes the reason why raiders from other worlds test their luck to breach through ancient fortresses to riches, it is because it sits their. The only safe haven for outsiders would be the Ruins of Giants, a city built by giants and for giants. Here people trade, sell, buy and barter for various goods and services, most of which is exotic in nature. Tame dinosaurs can be seen pushing carts, demons bump shoulders with angels, captured monsters fight in bloodsport, sometimes with captives and criminals.

It is worthy of note most of the secrets of this city have been discovered and explored but occasionally a new secret is discovered sometimes with disastrous consequences. Only the outer layer of the city is being inhabited , the lower levels of the city like the sewers and beyond have yet to be explored. Oftentimes it is seen with an entire ecosystem of monstrous guardians, deadly traps and other hazards. Very few people of course go down below for this reason but it is said their are treasures down their. Despite being a floating island it is much larger inside than the outside of itself, nobody knows how a individual is capable of this feat without assistance. However in time the city has been able to build on the outside. Enlarging the city, using scaffolding and is able to make a sort of canopy of various materials. Making the giant citadel look like a mushroom in the distance. What's more important however is that this place is also connected toward all the other worlds and planes. Via magic portals, sort of like a rip in space, time and reality. That you can go through to go to your desired destination. So despite issues with the various governments, contraband do go through these magic 'channels'. The various governments often have stakes on the various parts of the city and often those areas have embassies with portals which you can go through to get to their plane. Naturally the embassy checks for contraband, however treasure is usually allowed through if it's something of importance and of great concern to the nation.
