Chapter 23 - Chapter Twenty-three: Wolferan

Wolferan sat by the fire looking over to the already fast asleep Leanunya. He couldn't believe all the information he had already gotten from her in just this one day. He assumed she had let down her guard and answered most of his questions. There had been that one question about where she had trained that she didn't answer.

Although he had learned much about her he never expected. Honestly, he didn't expect her to be so naive. He had thought her to be smart but she was still so naive. He also was surprised by the fact that she had taught herself to read and write. That was something he really never expected. He had assumed she had gone to school but she hadn't and had taught herself. So, how far could she have gone if she had gone to school or was taught?

It was something he was both wanting and nervous to know. If she had, would she be even worse in her killing or would she have traveled down a different path? He didn't know but with as much as he gathered about her he could finally start to piece her life together. He could tell she grew up in the mountains with little to no care and plotted her own parents' deaths before the king issued his ban on hybrids.

She had lost her chance to kill her parents and went after the king. She had been close to killing the king but instead of killing him she was made to go on the run. He then knew she went into hiding though he didn't know where though he thought it had been in a forest. She had trained there before coming back into civilization where she started to kill nobles and it was during this time he started to hunt her down.

There was so much more he wanted to learn to be able to understand her reasons for killing. What had ultimately led her to want to kill her own parents? He then thought back to what she had said about them but frowned, unable to see the cause that led her to her decision. She acted just like a child at times he had noticed like when she had said it didn't matter who died because it stained her hands red with blood.

He had only met those who had only killed one person or who were children to have this kind of thinking but it also made him wonder why she only killed bad people. If what she said was true that it didn't matter who she killed then why did she not kill just anyone? He couldn't understand her thinking on this matter and could only try to get an answer later.

Thinking of her childish thinking he looked to Leanunya who was sleeping curled up. It was really hard to see her as a nineteen year old, when face to face she looked just like a twelve year old child. But when he thought about it he had started to treat her as someone far older before he had caught her due to her ability to escape and fight so well.

He sighed and rubbed his face before thinking about what had happened earlier with the change in camps. Had she always lived in the forest? If so then where and also did that mean she didn't have a home? He didn't know at the moment and could only try and get an answer from Leaunya. Though with her knowledge of the forest it was no wonder she could escape him once she reached the forests every time.

Her knowledge of the forest was far greater then he probably could ever hope to learn in a short amount of time and be able to remember it all. He was no genius. He had only lived long enough to gather much knowledge but Leanunya.. She was a genius. If she had someone to teach her it could be imagined how far she could go one day.

Wolferan had a wild idea that if she was telling the truth about killing only bad people he could teach her, but if he did.. he was concerned. With the vast amounts of knowledge he had gathered in his many years of life would she use it for the worse and bring the world to peril? He didn't know but he knew for now he couldn't take the risk although he figured he would far outlive her if she did turn totally evil.

Although for some reason his instincts were telling him differently. He sighed unsure what to do. After a while he finally decided to play it by ear and learn more about Leanunya to be able to make the best choice. Time would only tell if she was really a good person who only killed evil or someone who just killed to please their sense of superiority. He had met a few killers who killed only bad people, he had let them be as they were killing people and making the lives of those around them better. It was until they started to kill people for some petty crimes that made him make his move against them.

He was not someone who liked injustice but he knew there was only so much interference he could do that would help. Evil was all around and anyone could succumb to it including himself. With this thinking he always made sure to try and humble himself so as not to be overcome by the greed for power which was also why he rarely interfered with the world. He only went bounty hunting to remind himself of the evil in the world as well as help those affected. He did admit; he perhaps was too inactive in the world.

He should have put a stop to the king's ban on hybrids now in hindsight but what was done was done. He could only try to remedy this by lifting the ban. When he got back home he would send a letter to the king and have him remove the ban. His inaction had led to many deaths and it was his fault for not understanding this sooner. He was not a good person although nor was he exactly a bad person. He was perhaps someone inetween who lay in the middle. His fear of turning evil from having greed for power had made him lose sight of the reason he came to rule the world as he did.

Of course he knew as a dracion it was far easier to lose oneself to greed. He had experienced the excessive greed once or twice though he was always able to pull himself back and not lose focus of his goal of helping others. He smiled rly to himself. He was already greedy, he wanted to help everyone but to keep his greed in check he couldn't help many in fact at times because of his inaction he brought more harm than good to others.

He looked around the camp and sighed. He then lay next to the fire knowing he would need to get some rest for the trip ahead since he was also having to carry Leanunya. Even though she was very light weight which at first did concern him as he did not expect her to be so light weight. It made him think she was underweight but from what the healer had told him she was just all muscle. Not an ounce of fat but then he also was told that for a cattogn it was not a good thing so he was unsure if she was underweight or not as he knew so little about Cattagons.

Thinking of that he realized she was a quiet person who didn't share her pains and sorrows. He had thought before during the day she wasn't in much pain but had willingly taken the pill he had given her to help her deal with the pain and sleep. She had even expressed her wishing he had given her one sooner. In which case she might be starving and never tell someone else and that could also explain her being so small and looking so young.

If that was true then not only could she hide her pains but hid the fact she didn't get enough food. With this though in mind he decided to test his theory by giving her extra food. If she ate it then he was right. If not then he was wrong. He didn't know why this was becoming important to him but he wanted to find out if she was hiding the fact she was starving. He sighed before clearing his mind to sleep for the night.
