If Kate Simmons drowned, she could, at least, receive mouth to mouth. Then someone would have to pay attention, see her. Though, in reality, it wouldn't work. For her to drown would mean national attention for him and some other girl who happened to be there. Which is why, funny enough, drowning would be her best case scenario. Mother would run to Griff leaving some handsome, gorgeous, very life guard to give her mouth to mouth.

But that was a dream, reality had a different ending in mind. Instead, Kate would freeze to death untouched, like pork cutlets in a synagogue. The family whole. Her, Mother and Mr 'perfect' brother, somewhere a cult was gonna miss out on a virgin-

"We're not going to freeze." Mrs. Simmons sighed.

Apparently putting a stamp of exhaustion to a conversation, they had never had! It was just in her ability to read people, and but one to sit shocked...

"Then why are my hands blistering mom?" Kate 'asked'.

Two percent of that statement was a question. More than enough to get Mother to jump on it.

"Because your gloves are off Kate, at that yummy body heat is flying out of you through your extremities, get it?" She said.

"No, I don't get it, Mother dearest. I needed an illustration."

Griff, gloveless too, giggled.

"Illustration."

Kate's head snapped to Griff like a velociraptor whose prey was behind a Mother shaped cage, only to turn back and blow on her fingers. The Mother cage was electrified with turrets capable of sitting down satellite attached.

"Instead of an illustration, put your gloves on." Mother said.

"That won't save us from dying of hyperthermia."

"No one's going to die."

A list of responses lined up like a firing squad but were immediately discarded.

"Mom?"

"Yes, Kaitlyn."

Oh no, her whole name. She'd been right to keep things light, a playful jab would have led to a haymaker... But would Kate be Mother's daughter if she stopped?

"Why did you look lovingly to Griffen when you said everything was going to be okay?" Kate asked in her most adorable toddler voice.

Mother's eyes widened. Kaboom, a straight cross to the jaw followed by a judo flip.

"I did no such thing!" Mother insisted, appalled by her own mistake.

"Okay Mom." Kate said, rolling her eyes.

There was an awkward moment where Kate went out of her way to avoid eye contact. Mother was more likely than not, hunting for the chance to rant as her comeback.

But Mother's rants required 'participation'

Griff's finger stabbed directly into Kate's side, piercing past puffy fabric, right into her squishy love handles, with force enough to make her yelp.

"What the hell was that for?" Kate yelled.

"Just wanted to see if you're were still awake."

"Oh, allow me to confirm your consciousness." Kate said.

"Not a bad plan kids, I'll check Griff, you check me Kate." Mother said.

Kate scowled but swallowed her incredulity down.

The warm square of light that outlined the ceiling flickered.

Everything got real cold real quick.
