Chapter 27 - Chapter 24: The Space Between Breaths

Marcus remained at Grayhaven Bay long after Ruth and Matthew had disappeared from his sight.

The waves continued their endless rhythm beneath the cliff.

The wind carried the familiar scent of salt and sea.

Everything around him remained exactly the same.

The same ocean.

The same cliffs.

The same place where Ruth had once laughed beside him.

And yet somehow, it felt like he was the stranger now.

Marcus sat on the wooden bench overlooking the water, the photograph in his hand slowly becoming blurred as his fingers tightened around it.

Ruth.

His Ruth.

Smiling.

Happy.

Her fingers intertwined with his.

Looking at him as though there was nowhere else she would rather be.

A woman who had once known every part of him.

A woman who had loved him long before he understood how much he needed her.

He stared at the photograph until the ache in his chest became unbearable.

Three weeks.

It had been three weeks since Ruth returned.

Three weeks since the woman he had spent months searching for had finally appeared in front of him.

Three weeks since he held his wife again.

And yet...

he had never felt farther away from her.

Marcus had prepared himself for anger.

He had prepared himself for questions.

He had prepared himself for confusion.

He had prepared himself for Ruth not remembering their marriage.

But he had never prepared himself for fear.

Not from her.

Never from Ruth.

His fingers slowly lowered the photograph.

Every time she stepped away from him, he told himself not to take it personally.

Every time she refused his touch, he reminded himself that she did not remember.

Every time she looked at Matthew for comfort instead of him, he forced himself to understand.

But understanding did not make it hurt less.

Because Marcus remembered.

He remembered everything.

The way Ruth used to find excuses to be near him.

The way she pretended not to care whenever he caught her staring.

The way she would steal his coffee when she knew he was too busy to stop her.

The way she held his hand without thinking.

The way she would lean against him during long drives because she trusted him enough to fall asleep.

The way she fit against him like she had always belonged there.

And now...

he was a stranger wearing the face of someone she once loved.

A bitter laugh escaped him.

How cruel could fate be?

It gave him back the woman he lost...

only to take away the part of her that loved him.

He closed his eyes.

For three weeks, he had been fighting.

Fighting against the doctors who told him recovery would take time.

Fighting against his own fear.

Fighting against the possibility that Ruth might never remember.

But most of all...

he had been fighting the distance between them.

Because Marcus Hughes was not a man who waited.

He solved problems.

He confronted obstacles.

He chased what mattered.

And Ruth had always mattered.

But for the first time in his life, he wondered if chasing her was the very thing making her run.

His jaw tightened.

He hated that possibility.

He hated even more that it might be true.

It was almost an hour later when Marcus finally stood.

He could not stay there forever.

No matter how much he wanted to.

The drive back to Wilson House was quiet.

For once, he did not rush.

He did not call anyone.

He did not plan another attempt to make Ruth remember.

He simply drove.

Because perhaps...

just perhaps...

Ruth needed something from him that he had never been good at giving.

Space.

The moment Marcus entered the house, he stopped.

Voices.

Ruth.

And Matthew.

He should have walked away.

He knew he should.

But then he heard his name.

And he froze.

"I don't know what is wrong with me."

Ruth's voice was quiet.

Confused.

Almost frustrated.

Marcus remained outside the room, unable to move.

"I want to trust him, Matthew. I really do."

His chest tightened.

"But every time Marcus is near me..."

A pause.

"I feel like I am disappointing him."

Matthew did not answer immediately.

Ruth continued.

"Like I am supposed to know something I don't. Like I am supposed to become someone I cannot remember being."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Because that was never what he wanted.

Not once.

Not ever.

"I see the hurt in his eyes," she whispered.

"He looks at me like he lost something."

Her voice softened.

"And I know he loves his wife."

A painful silence followed.

"But I am not her."

The words struck harder than Marcus expected.

"I know everyone says I am Ruth Hughes. I know everyone tells me I loved him."

She swallowed.

"But my mind doesn't know that."

Marcus looked down.

His hand slowly curled into a fist.

"I know he is trying."

Ruth's voice trembled.

"I know he is not trying to hurt me."

A pause.

"But when he is near..."

She struggled.

Searching for the words.

"I feel like I have to remember."

Marcus stopped breathing.

"Like every look, every photograph, every place..."

Her voice became smaller.

"...is another reminder that I am failing him."

Silence.

Then:

"I feel like I am being watched all the time."

Marcus flinched.

Ruth immediately added:

"Not because he wants to control me."

"Matthew, I don't think Marcus is cruel."

That somehow hurt more.

Because even now, even afraid, Ruth was still defending him.

"But I feel pressure."

A shaky breath.

"I feel like I have to become the woman he lost."

Marcus lowered his head.

"And I cannot."

The room went quiet.

Then Ruth whispered:

"When I am with you, Matthew..."

Marcus felt the words before she even said them.

"I can breathe."

His chest tightened.

"But with Marcus..."

A pause.

"I can't."

Marcus did not move.

Not because he was angry.

Because he could not.

Every word forced him to confront something he had been refusing to see.

He had been so focused on bringing Ruth back...

that he never stopped to ask whether she was ready.

He wanted his wife.

He wanted the woman who knew him.

The woman who loved him.

The woman who called him impossible and annoying and still reached for his hand.

But the woman standing before him now was not refusing him out of cruelty.

She was lost.

And he had been asking her to find her way back too quickly.

His hand loosened.

For the first time since Ruth returned...

Marcus admitted something he hated.

Love was not enough.

Not if the person you loved felt trapped by it.

"Ruth."

Matthew's voice was gentle.

"Marcus loves you."

"He loves his wife."

"Marcus is trying to make you remember that you are his wife."

"I know."

Her voice was barely audible.

"I know he loves me."

A pause.

"But I don't know how to love him back."

Marcus looked away.

That hurt.

But he deserved the honesty.

"I just need space."

And there it was.

The answer he had been avoiding.

Not because he understood everything.

Not because it suddenly stopped hurting.

But because he loved her enough to try.

That night, Marcus did not enter Ruth's room.

He did not knock.

He did not ask if she was feeling better.

He did not bring another album of photographs.

He did not tell her another story about their marriage.

He simply walked past her door.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Like even his presence needed permission.

The next morning, Ruth noticed.

At first, she thought she felt relieved.

This was what she wanted.

Space.

No pressure.

No expectations.

No Marcus standing near her, watching her reaction every time someone mentioned their past.

She should have been happy.

But somehow...

the house felt different.

Too quiet.

At breakfast, she found herself looking toward the doorway.

Waiting.

For what?

She didn't know.

Perhaps for his serious expression.

Perhaps for his familiar irritation whenever she skipped breakfast.

Perhaps for him to tell her she was being reckless.

Again.

The thought almost made her smile.

Almost.

She immediately frowned.

Why was she thinking about him?

Marcus Hughes was a stranger.

A stranger who claimed to be her husband.

A stranger who made her feel confused.

A stranger who somehow managed to make her feel guilty without even trying.

So why did the empty chair across from her bother her?
