Chapter 14 - Merlin

Max POV

I woke up early in the morning to Gordon's knocking. "Yes," I groan as I flip over in my bed pulling the covers over my head. It was like waking up to my mother trying to get me to get dressed for school.

The door opens and I throw a pillow over my head to shield my eyes from the light. "Get up Merlin it's time to meet the King," he says in his crusty voice, and I just lay still for a bit. "And I see you decorated your room. It's not my taste but it is something," he comments but whatever taste he liked I would rather not know.

"Please call me Max," I yawn, removing the pillow, "And give me a minute I need to get dressed." He nods as I finally open my eyes before he leaves the room.

I hop out of the bed trying to energize myself, but my eyes had different plans. As I walk over to my new implanted closet I slip over the dusty brown book and fall on my face smacking my nose on the floor along with my lips as I feel myself fully gain some type of energy. "Thank you book, I really needed that," I say sarcastically as I roll my eyes and use my arms to push myself off the floor then enter the closet.

I put together a pretty basic outfit to not draw too much attention to myself. I spot Derek's blue hoodie within my clothes and grab that. I love taking his clothes and did it so much that I forgot that I even had it. With the hoodie I add gray sweats and some slippers that I slip on before running out of the room to make sure Gordon didn't leave me.

"You can't dress like that here," Gordon tries to explain but I brush him off, "you should go change." I gave him a displeased look and headed out the house as he followed behind. I didn't know where we were going so, I let him lead the way.

....

"I'm sure you know pretty well what happens if you use magic," the king yells as we arrive. It was basically like a town square, and everyone gathered around looking up at the king from the balcony of the castle. A guillotine and an executioner stood in the middle of this holding onto a crying kneeling man. "That man is Nathan Descara and he was caught using magic to make pathetic flowers," the king continues to yell looking down at the crowd as the crowd begins to chant 'let him die' repeatedly.

"It was just flowers; shouldn't that be a warning or something?" I think to myself as I look over the disgusting crowd of people, I refused to call human. "I mean what was he going to do with flowers, blow pollen in everyone's face." The king was heartless and so were the poor people that looked up to him as all I could see while looking up at his highness was his golden crown that gave him power over others. I wanted to speak out for this sad man that had his life on the line but there was nothing I could do in this situation, or I would have been in the same predicament. Or maybe I just told myself that out of fear but at the end of the day I did nothing.

"Even though they were just flowers they could have been infected with something that could have killed the entire kingdom so I'm doing this for the safety of my people," he claimed, and I scoffed at his words. The only person that heard my complaint was Gordon as he hit me in the arm shutting me up as the King let out his final words. "Kill him." The executioner without hesitation pushes the man's head down lying within the wood of the machine before dropping the blade on his neck. It cuts through flesh and bone with ease as his head comes clean off rolling to the ground and off the little stage they were on as blood spewed out showering the audience in a nice coat of red. Lucky for me, I was in the back, so I was left clean, but the gruesome sight stained my brain. 'I needed to find Derek and get the hell out of here,' was my final thought as the crowd cheered for the king.

My eyes still trembling and my brain malfunctioning trying to process my life and how I ended up seeing such a disgusting sight then Gordon pulls me over to the side. "The man that was killed was the prince's servant," he whispered, "That means he needs a new one." I stared at him as the information was not going through my thought process. Nothing in my head was working. "That means he needs a new one," he continued, and I remained the same clueless man I was. Staring blankly in his eyes only thinking about getting out of Camelot. "Max, that means you have a way into the castle. I got you a job as the prince's servant. What do you think?"

I burst out into laughter. Laughter was the only way I could think of to cope with my problems. "There is no way I'm working for murderers," I say crossing my arms before continuing, "And who said I would be here long enough to even join the castle's crew?"

"What other option do you have?" Gordon questions me and I sigh. "Look kid, if you want to find your friend, I think working within the castle is the best choice for you. They travel and you are the first to hear about any weird occurrence." Gordon brought up some good points as I didn't have a good plan when it came to finding Derek. Maybe joining the castle wouldn't be that bad if it would equal finding my best friend. "If you decide to do it then you start bright and early tomorrow."
