The smoke from the burn fires tasted of fat and thick pine, a bitter layer settling over my tongue every time I drew a breath.
Above the ironwood wall of the Black Moon Territory, the sky had bruised into a deep, volatile violet
Down in the basin of the Town Burn, the great communal fire roared, a monstrous thing fed on grease-wood and iron-oak, spitting fat, angry sparks high into the gloom. It was a hearth built for comfort but it was also an engine of survival, casting harsh, flickering orange light across the earth, the blue bamboo structures, and the rows of heavy wooden cots laid out in the open air.
The whole clearing smelled of scorched copper, wet wolf-hide, and the sharp, vinegar tang of boiling poultices.
