My silk web stretched across the jagged tree line hummed faintly under my fingertips. Dozens of micro-fine threads converged directly into the loose, intricate weave I kept permanently wrapped around my left hand. Each individual strand carried its own small, distinct vibration back to my skin. It was a phantom language of twitches and pulses—a dialect of the dark that I had only learned after completing my fourth rebirth.
Three hours had passed since the previous gate battle. It was just enough time for the worst of their wounds to be hastily tended, for the exhausted defenders to catch a few precious minutes of fitful rest, and for the encroaching forest to fall into something almost resembling quiet.
But it wasn't long enough for the night to stay peaceful. This time, my sister and I would take charge of the defense.
