Vass's POV

I felt a heavy, wrong feeling in the sharp air. It had nothing to do with the cold midnight weather. It felt like pure pain spreading out from deep in the dark. It was like heat coming off a giant, open wound.

My fast run slowed down to a crawl before I could even think about it. Even inside my leather boots, the pads of my feet could feel the ground shaking slightly under the frost. My tail moved back and forth behind me. It kept my balance as I lowered my body close to the ground. An old animal instinct woke up inside me. It made me forget the simple mission I was given back on the wall: Scout. Report. Come back. That was the only order. But instead of turning away, I kept crawling forward over the ice. Then, a terrifying shape appeared out of the deep darkness.
