Chapter 263 - The Hand That Stopped

Chapter 263 — The Hand That Stopped

Brook wanted the door again.

He knew it before he admitted it.

They had been walking for nearly an hour.

Maybe more.

Eden had a way of making time feel unreliable. There was no sun where they were now, only a pale brightness filtering through the white canopy overhead. The path Gaia had made continued between low stone walls and patches of silver grass.

Nobody had mentioned Laboratory Nine.

That should have helped.

It didn't.

Brook kept seeing the door.

The steel.

The handle.

The faded plate.

B-01.

And the worst part was not the designation.

It was the smell.

Home.

He hated that word now.

Home had never smelled like anything special before.

Rain.

Concrete.

Old cooking oil.

Dust.

Warm clothes drying near a window.

Ordinary things.

Things that shouldn't have been powerful enough to pull a person backward through a hallway.

But that door had smelled like them.

Brook stopped walking.

Henry looked back.

"You good?"

"Yeah."

Henry stared at him.

"You've said that before."

"I'm still good."

"You stopped again."

Brook looked ahead.

"I forgot something."

Sera glanced over.

"What?"

Brook didn't answer.

Gabriel did.

"You didn't forget anything."

Brook looked at him.

Gabriel's expression was gentle.

Too gentle.

Brook hated that too.

"What makes you think that?"

"Because you've been looking behind us every thirty seconds."

Henry raised a hand.

"Forty-two."

Sera looked at him.

"You counted?"

"I was bored."

Charon appeared over his shoulder.

"I counted forty-three."

Henry frowned.

"You counted my counting?"

"I had nothing else to do."

Brook almost smiled.

It didn't last.

He looked back.

The hallway was gone.

Only trees.

White stone.

A narrow path.

Nothing else.

Brook could still feel the door.

Not physically.

Somewhere behind his ribs.

Like an unfinished sentence.

Gabriel walked toward him.

"You want to go back."

Brook didn't answer.

"You do."

"I said I forgot something."

"You're lying."

Brook's eyes hardened.

"Don't."

Gabriel stopped.

"I won't."

"Then stop asking."

"I wasn't asking."

Brook looked at him.

Gabriel's voice remained quiet.

"You're thinking about opening it."

Silence.

Sera and Henry had stopped farther ahead.

Crowley was watching from behind them.

Rick had turned too.

Nobody moved closer.

Brook looked at Gabriel.

"I want to know what's inside."

Gabriel nodded.

"I know."

"It could be something about me."

"It could."

"About B-01."

"Yes."

"About the Wall."

"Yes."

"About my parents."

That changed Gabriel's expression.

Only for a moment.

But Brook caught it.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Gabriel."

"I don't know what's behind that door."

"You hesitated."

"Because I know why you want it."

Brook stepped closer.

"Then say it."

Gabriel held his gaze.

"You don't want the room."

Brook said nothing.

"You want whoever was on the other side of it to remember you."

The words hit harder than Brook expected.

His face went still.

Gabriel continued.

"You want someone to open the door and say your name."

Brook looked away.

The pale grass moved in a wind he couldn't feel.

"You don't know that."

"No."

Gabriel's voice softened.

"But I know what it's like to stand in front of something that might explain where you came from."

Brook swallowed.

"You had Heaven."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"That doesn't mean Heaven ever explained me."

Brook looked back at him.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Brook turned around.

He started walking back.

Gabriel followed.

"Brook."

"I just want to look."

"No."

Brook kept walking.

"I won't touch anything."

"No."

"I won't open anything."

"You're already planning to."

Brook stopped.

Gabriel stopped behind him.

The silence between them was different now.

Not hostile.

Not yet.

Just tired.

Brook closed his eyes.

Inside him, something shifted.

A faint pressure.

Not Michael.

Not Death.

Not the quiet presence of the deeper Source.

Heat moved through his chest.

Lucifer.

Brook opened his eyes.

Gabriel saw it.

"Brook."

"I know."

The pressure increased.

The world sharpened.

Every sound separated.

Grass against grass.

Henry's breathing.

Sera's fingers against her book.

Crowley's coat moving in the wind.

Gabriel's heartbeat.

Brook could hear all of it.

His body felt suddenly too light.

Too ready.

Gabriel took one step toward him.

"Look at me."

Brook did.

Gabriel's eyes were calm.

"Don't go back."

Brook's jaw tightened.

"I said I won't open it."

"I believe you."

"Then move."

Gabriel didn't.

Brook stared at him.

"Move."

"No."

The word was quiet.

But it was final.

Brook's fingers curled.

The pressure inside him sharpened.

Lucifer's voice came without warning.

You know what you want.

Brook's breathing changed.

Take the obstacle away.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"Shut up."

Gabriel heard him.

"Brook?"

"Not you."

Gabriel understood.

His expression changed.

"It's happening."

Brook's shoulders tensed.

The heat spread into his arms.

Devil's Instinct.

Not taking him.

Not controlling him.

Just offering him the easiest answer.

Remove the obstacle.

Gabriel was between him and the hallway.

Gabriel was the obstacle.

Brook took a step.

Gabriel didn't retreat.

"Brook."

"Move."

"No."

"Gabriel."

"No."

Brook's hand twitched.

Gabriel's eyes flicked down.

Then back up.

"I know you can stop it."

Brook breathed through his nose.

"Don't tell me what I can do."

"Then do it."

The words landed badly.

Brook's fist tightened.

For half a second, he wasn't thinking about Gabriel.

He was thinking about the door.

The smell.

The Wall.

The room.

Someone waiting.

Someone who knew.

Someone who had written B-01.

Someone who might have known him before he knew himself.

His body moved.

One step.

His right shoulder turned.

His arm came up.

Gabriel didn't raise his weapon.

He didn't summon light.

He didn't defend himself.

He simply stood there.

Brook's fist stopped inches from Gabriel's face.

The air cracked.

A pressure wave tore through the grass.

Henry shouted.

"BROOK!"

Brook's fist trembled.

Gabriel didn't move.

Brook could see his own reflection in Gabriel's eyes.

His face looked wrong.

Not monstrous.

Worse.

Familiar.

Cold.

Precise.

The same face from the memory-garden.

The clean version of himself.

No hesitation.

No mess.

No apology.

Just action.

Gabriel's voice was barely above a whisper.

"That's not you."

Brook's fist remained suspended.

"Don't."

"Okay."

"Don't say that."

"Okay."

The Devil's Instinct pushed again.

Finish it.

Brook's arm moved another inch.

Then something grabbed his sleeve.

Henry.

His fingers were wrapped around Brook's coat.

His hand was shaking.

But he didn't let go.

"Brook."

Brook looked down.

Henry's face was pale.

Not angry.

Not afraid enough to run.

Just scared.

"Henry."

"Don't."

Brook's breathing was ragged.

"I wasn't—"

"I know."

Henry swallowed.

"I know you weren't going to hit him."

Brook looked at the fist still hanging beside Gabriel's face.

Henry's voice broke slightly.

"You just…"

He couldn't finish.

Brook lowered his arm.

The pressure inside him vanished so quickly it left him dizzy.

Gabriel exhaled.

Henry still held the sleeve.

Brook stared at him.

"You can let go."

Henry didn't.

"Not yet."

Brook didn't argue.

Sera approached slowly.

Crowley came with her.

Rick and Shoyo stayed back.

Sera looked at Brook's hand.

Then Gabriel.

Then Henry.

"What happened?"

Henry answered.

"He almost hit Gabriel."

Sera's face tightened.

Brook looked away.

"I know."

Crowley said nothing.

That was worse.

Brook expected anger.

A lecture.

Something.

Instead, Crowley stood beside him and looked toward the distant trees.

Finally, he said:

"You stopped."

Brook's voice was low.

"Henry stopped me."

Crowley shook his head.

"Henry reminded you."

Brook looked at him.

"You stopped."

Brook didn't answer.

Crowley looked at Henry's hand still gripping Brook's sleeve.

Then back at Brook.

"You could've moved him."

Brook's stomach twisted.

"I know."

"You didn't."

"I know."

Crowley nodded once.

"That matters."

Brook's eyes burned.

He hated that it mattered.

Because it meant there had been a choice.

And he had come too close to choosing wrong.

Gabriel finally moved.

He stepped closer.

Brook instinctively tensed.

Gabriel stopped immediately.

"I'm not going to touch you."

Brook nodded.

Gabriel looked at the ground.

"I wasn't afraid you'd become Lucifer."

Brook looked at him.

Gabriel continued.

"I was afraid you'd use him as an excuse."

Brook's face tightened.

Lucifer's voice came softly from somewhere deep inside.

He's right.

Brook shut his eyes.

"That's the worst part."

Gabriel heard him.

"What?"

Brook opened his eyes.

"I knew what was happening."

Nobody spoke.

Brook looked at his hand.

"I knew."

Sera said quietly, "That's different."

"No."

"It is."

"I felt it."

Sera stepped closer.

"You noticed it."

"After I moved."

"But before you hit him."

Brook looked at her.

Sera held his gaze.

"That matters too."

Brook laughed once.

It was a broken sound.

"I almost punched Gabriel in the face because I wanted to open a door."

Henry finally released his sleeve.

"You didn't punch him."

"That's your standard?"

"Right now?"

Henry shrugged.

"Yes."

Charon emerged from his shoulder.

"I would also like to establish that Gabriel still has a face."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Thank you."

"It's an important distinction."

Despite everything, Henry smiled.

Brook didn't.

Not yet.

Crowley looked at the road ahead.

"We're not going back."

Brook knew he was right.

Still, he turned.

The hallway was gone.

There was no door.

Nothing to fight.

Nothing to break.

Nothing to force.

Only white trees.

Brook stood there for a long moment.

Then he whispered,

"I wanted it."

Gabriel answered.

"I know."

"I still want it."

"I know."

Brook looked at him.

"What if the answer is there?"

Gabriel didn't pretend.

"Then it will still be there later."

Brook breathed in.

"And if it isn't?"

"Then opening it wouldn't have made the truth better."

Brook looked down.

Henry stepped beside him.

"Come on."

Brook didn't move.

Henry nudged him with his shoulder.

"Four-second light practice."

Brook glanced at him.

"Now?"

"Yeah."

"Why?"

"Because I'm very close to five."

Charon raised a finger.

"You are not."

"I was once."

"You were hallucinating."

"It was five seconds."

"It was four seconds and an extremely optimistic blink."

Henry looked offended.

Brook finally smiled.

Small.

Tired.

But real.

"Four seconds."

Henry grinned.

"Four seconds."

They started walking.

Sera fell into step beside Brook.

Gabriel followed on his other side.

Crowley remained behind them.

Rick and Shoyo brought up the rear.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Henry raised his hand.

"Ready?"

Brook looked at him.

"For what?"

"My light."

"Do it."

Henry concentrated.

A tiny sphere of pale light appeared above his palm.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Henry's eyes widened.

Five—

The light vanished.

Henry stared at his empty hand.

"I did it."

Charon screamed.

"HE DID IT!"

Henry spun around.

"Five seconds!"

Sera laughed.

Gabriel laughed.

Even Rick smiled.

Brook laughed too.

For a moment, the door disappeared from his mind.

The Wall disappeared.

B-01 disappeared.

Laboratory Nine disappeared.

There was only Henry standing there with his hand raised, Charon celebrating like they'd won a war, Sera laughing, Gabriel shaking his head, Crowley pretending not to smile.

Brook looked at them.

His chest hurt.

Not from the Source.

Not from the Instinct.

From something simpler.

Something human.

He looked at his hand.

The one that had almost struck Gabriel.

Then he closed it.

Not into a fist.

Just closed.

And kept walking.

Behind them, somewhere beneath Eden, Laboratory Nine remained shut.

Brook wanted the door.

He still wanted it.

But wanting something was not the same as opening it.

For now, that difference was enough.
