Chapter 264 - The Name They Used

Chapter 264 — The Name They Used

Heaven entered Eden without opening a door.

That was what frightened Gabriel.

There was no trumpet.

No golden gate.

No army descending through the clouds.

No announcement from whatever part of Heaven still believed itself entitled to be heard.

The first sign was the light.

It appeared between the trees.

A thin white line.

Then another.

Then another.

They crossed the pale sky overhead, too straight to be natural and too deliberate to be lightning.

Gabriel stopped walking.

Everyone noticed.

Henry's light was still glowing faintly in his palm from the five-second miracle.

Charon leaned around his shoulder.

"Uh."

Henry looked up.

"What?"

"Sky."

"I can see that."

"No, I mean the bad sky."

Henry lowered his hand.

The light above them moved.

Not downward.

Sideways.

It drew a perfect line across the white canopy.

Sera closed her book.

"That's Heaven."

Gabriel nodded.

"Yes."

Crowley looked toward the western ridge.

"How many?"

Gabriel studied the light.

"Enough."

Rick sighed.

"That's not a number."

"It's the number I have."

Shoyo tightened the wrap around her wrist.

"Then we assume too many."

Brook looked at Gabriel.

"Are they coming for you?"

Gabriel didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"They're coming for what they think I am."

Crowley gave a humorless smile.

"Same thing."

Gabriel glanced at him.

"Not quite."

"No?"

"You know exactly what they think you are."

Crowley looked toward the sky.

"And you don't?"

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"I know what they think I should be."

The first figure appeared.

Then ten.

Then twenty.

They stood along the ridge.

White armor.

Long coats.

Blades of condensed light.

No wings.

No theatrical descent.

Just soldiers.

Disciplined.

Waiting.

Brook counted them.

Thirty-two.

Then forty.

Then more appeared behind them.

Henry leaned toward Sera.

"That's too many."

Sera nodded.

"Correct."

Charon raised a hand.

"I would like to formally withdraw from the situation."

"No," Henry said.

"I tried."

"I know."

The army moved.

Gabriel stepped forward.

"Stay behind me."

Brook looked at him.

"No."

Gabriel glanced back.

"Brook."

"You don't get to be the shield every time."

"This isn't about being a shield."

"Then what is it?"

Gabriel looked at the approaching army.

"It's about knowing what they came here to do."

A voice carried across the valley.

"Gabriel."

The soldiers stopped.

A single man walked to the front.

His armor was different.

Older.

The white metal around his shoulders had been scratched and repaired many times.

He carried no visible weapon.

He didn't need one.

His presence alone made the air feel thinner.

Gabriel's expression changed.

"Captain."

The man stopped several dozen feet away.

"Gabriel."

"You've come far."

"You've made us come far."

Gabriel sighed.

"I told you where I stood."

"You told us you had chosen."

"I did."

The captain's eyes moved across the group.

Rick.

Shoyo.

Sera.

Henry.

Crowley.

Tala.

Hutena.

Then Brook.

His gaze stopped there.

Brook felt nothing.

The captain's eyes narrowed.

"B-01."

Brook didn't react.

Not enough.

The words barely reached him.

B-01.

A designation.

A scratch on a door.

A piece of paper in his pocket.

Something from Laboratory Nine.

Something from before.

His face remained still.

Too still.

Crowley reacted.

Only once.

A tiny movement in his jaw.

His eyes changed.

His hand shifted beneath his coat.

Brook noticed.

The captain noticed too.

But the captain did not say the designation again.

He simply looked at Brook.

Then Crowley.

Interesting.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

The captain raised his hand.

"Take Gabriel alive."

The soldiers moved.

Everything happened at once.

Light slammed into the ground.

Gabriel met the first wave head-on.

Sera shouted a word.

"STOP!"

The command struck three soldiers in mid-step.

They froze.

Not completely.

Their bodies shook against the Word.

Sera's eyes widened.

"Three."

"That's new," Henry said.

"Don't compliment me while I'm concentrating."

Henry raised his hands.

Charon erupted from his back.

A massive black arm caught a descending blade.

The impact drove Henry's boots into the ground.

"Four seconds!"

"Five," Henry shouted.

"Four and a half!"

"Five!"

"Fine!"

Charon formed a second arm.

Rick moved.

His blade cut through a line of white light.

Shoyo's hand flashed.

A seal appeared beneath a soldier's feet.

The ground snapped upward.

Crowley disappeared into the battle.

Not with magic.

Not with Hellfire.

Just movement.

One moment he was beside Brook.

The next he was behind three soldiers.

They turned.

Too late.

Brook moved forward.

A blade came for his throat.

He ducked.

Elbow.

Knee.

Palm.

The soldier went down.

Another came from the side.

Brook turned.

The world sharpened.

He could see the attack before it arrived.

His hand moved toward the man's wrist.

Then something screamed inside him.

Not pain.

Instinct.

Heat.

Violence.

Lucifer.

Brook's fingers tightened.

The soldier's wrist was exposed.

One twist.

Break.

Finish.

Brook stopped.

He shoved the soldier away instead.

The blade missed his ribs.

Brook stepped back.

"Not today."

The heat receded.

The battle continued.

Gabriel was surrounded.

Six soldiers attacked him simultaneously.

He didn't kill them.

He blocked.

Redirected.

Disarmed.

Moved.

The captain watched.

"You still refuse."

Gabriel knocked a blade aside.

"Yes."

"You still think they are worth protecting."

Gabriel glanced toward Brook.

Henry.

Sera.

Crowley.

Tala.

Hutena.

Rick.

Shoyo.

"Yes."

The captain's expression hardened.

"Then you will fall with them."

He raised his hand.

The sky opened.

A white spear of light formed overhead.

Brook looked up.

Gabriel saw it.

"Move!"

The spear dropped.

Brook's body reacted before his mind finished.

One mark.

He had one remaining.

Michael.

A mark flashed across his palm.

Brook threw his hand toward Gabriel.

The mark transferred.

For one heartbeat, Michael's presence moved through him.

Not a voice.

Not a command.

Just light.

Brook pulled.

The world folded.

He and Gabriel vanished.

The spear hit the ground where they had stood.

The explosion tore through the valley.

Brook reappeared twenty feet away.

He hit the ground hard.

Gabriel rolled beside him.

Brook's shoulder slammed against stone.

He gasped.

Gabriel sat up.

"You okay?"

Brook pushed himself upright.

"No."

Gabriel laughed.

"That sounded honest."

"Shut up."

The mark on Brook's palm disappeared.

Spent.

One jump.

Gone.

Michael said nothing.

Brook didn't need him to.

Gabriel looked at Brook's hand.

"Thank you."

Brook stood.

"Don't make it weird."

"I was going to."

"I know."

Gabriel smiled.

Then his expression changed.

"Brook."

"What?"

"You reacted."

Brook frowned.

"To what?"

"Back there."

"The spear?"

"No."

Gabriel looked toward the captain.

"B-01."

Brook stared at him.

"I didn't."

"You did."

Brook shook his head.

"I didn't feel anything."

Gabriel studied him.

"You looked like you didn't."

"That sounds like the same thing."

"It isn't."

Brook didn't understand.

Then he saw Crowley.

Crowley was standing twenty feet away.

Three soldiers were unconscious around him.

His coat was torn at the shoulder.

Blood ran from one eyebrow.

And he wasn't looking at the captain.

He was looking at Brook.

Specifically Brook's face.

Then at the captain.

Then back.

Brook walked toward him.

"You knew."

Crowley wiped the blood from his eyebrow.

"Knew what?"

"B-01."

Crowley looked away.

"Not now."

"That means yes."

"It means we're being attacked."

"Crowley."

"Brook."

Their eyes met.

Crowley's expression softened.

Only slightly.

"You didn't react."

Brook swallowed.

"I didn't know what to react to."

"I know."

"Then why did you?"

Crowley didn't answer.

Another blast struck nearby.

Stone erupted.

Sera shouted.

"Move!"

Crowley grabbed Brook by the shoulder and pulled him aside.

A soldier's blade passed through the space where his neck had been.

Brook countered immediately.

The soldier fell.

Crowley looked at him.

"You're getting better."

Brook stared.

"That wasn't an answer."

"No."

"Then give me one."

"Later."

"You keep saying that."

"Because you're still alive."

Brook opened his mouth.

Crowley pushed him forward.

"Go."

They ran.

The battle had spread across the valley.

Heaven's soldiers were no longer trying to surround Gabriel.

They were trying to separate the group.

One unit pushed toward Tala.

Another toward Hutena.

Sera was pinned against a stone wall.

Henry and Charon were holding two soldiers back.

Rick fought beside Shoyo.

Gabriel moved between everyone, trying to prevent the lines from splitting.

Brook saw Hutena stumble.

A soldier raised his blade.

Brook ran.

He reached her just as the weapon came down.

He caught the soldier's wrist.

Twisted.

Disarmed.

Hutena stared at him.

"Thank you."

"You okay?"

"I don't know."

"That makes two of us."

She looked past him.

At the battlefield.

At Gabriel.

At Crowley.

At the captain.

Her face went pale.

"What?"

Brook asked.

"I can't see this."

"Can't see what?"

"The next part."

Brook's expression hardened.

"Then don't."

Hutena looked at him.

"What?"

"Stay with us."

She nodded.

Brook pulled her behind a stone wall.

Then he heard Henry yell.

"BROOK!"

Brook turned.

A soldier had gotten through.

Henry was on one knee.

Charon's arm was broken apart.

The captain stood behind them.

His attention was fixed on Brook.

Not Henry.

Not Gabriel.

Brook.

"B-01," he said again.

Only once.

Brook froze.

This time, something moved inside him.

Not Devil's Instinct.

Not power.

Memory.

A corridor.

A child.

A number.

Someone's hand on glass.

A voice saying—

Again.

Brook's breath caught.

He almost stopped.

Then Henry screamed.

"BROOK!"

Brook moved.

No teleport.

No Source.

No power.

He ran.

He reached Henry and dropped beside him.

Charon's broken arm reformed.

Henry looked at Brook.

"You okay?"

Brook nodded.

"Yeah."

"You sure?"

"No."

Henry smiled.

"Good."

Brook helped him stand.

"Can you walk?"

Henry looked offended.

"Obviously."

"You're limping."

"I can limp."

"That isn't walking."

"It's advanced walking."

Brook laughed.

A real laugh.

Short.

Immediate.

Henry grinned.

"There you go."

Brook looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

They moved together.

Sera joined them.

Gabriel followed.

Crowley came last.

The captain watched them regroup.

He lowered his hand.

The soldiers stopped.

For a moment, nobody attacked.

The captain looked directly at Brook.

Then at Crowley.

Whatever he had come to Eden expecting, he had found something else.

He turned.

"Withdraw."

Gabriel blinked.

"What?"

The army began retreating toward the ridge.

Gabriel stepped forward.

"Why?"

The captain looked over his shoulder.

"We have confirmed enough."

Crowley went still.

Brook noticed.

"What does that mean?"

The captain's gaze returned to him.

"Nothing."

Then he left.

The white soldiers followed.

Within moments, the ridge was empty.

No victory.

No celebration.

Just silence.

Henry lowered himself onto a rock.

"Did we win?"

Sera shook her head.

"No."

"Did they lose?"

"No."

Henry sighed.

"I hate this kind of fighting."

Charon formed a tiny hand.

"I vote for fights where someone clearly loses."

Rick sheathed his weapon.

"So do I."

Shoyo looked at the ridge.

"They got what they wanted."

Brook turned.

"What?"

She didn't answer.

Brook looked at Crowley.

Crowley was staring at the ground.

"Crowley."

Nothing.

"Crowley."

He finally looked up.

Brook said quietly:

"They called me B-01."

"I heard."

"You knew."

Crowley didn't deny it.

"I've heard the designation before."

"Where?"

Crowley looked at the others.

"Not here."

Brook's expression tightened.

"You always do this."

"I know."

"You tell me later."

"Yes."

"You keep things from me."

"Yes."

Brook stared at him.

Crowley stepped closer.

"But not because I think you can't handle the truth."

"Then why?"

Crowley looked toward the empty ridge.

"Because sometimes the truth is a thing you should meet when you're standing."

Brook didn't understand.

Crowley put a hand on his shoulder.

"You're standing now."

Brook looked at him.

Crowley removed his hand.

"But you're not ready to hear everything."

Brook wanted to argue.

He didn't.

Instead, he looked at his palm.

The Michael mark was gone.

One jump.

Spent.

He flexed his fingers.

Then looked toward the direction of Laboratory Nine.

It was somewhere behind them.

Still closed.

Still waiting.

He could go back.

He knew that.

He could search.

He could force the lock.

He could tear the hallway apart if he really wanted to.

But he remembered Henry's hand on his sleeve.

Gabriel standing still.

Sera's voice.

Crowley's eyes.

He wasn't going back.

Not today.

Brook turned toward the group.

"Let's move."

Henry stood.

"Where?"

"Forward."

Charon raised his hand.

"Does forward have food?"

"No."

"I object."

Sera sighed.

"You object to everything."

"It's my strongest quality."

Gabriel smiled.

Rick began walking.

Shoyo followed.

Tala came beside Brook.

She looked at him for a moment.

"You're quieter."

Brook glanced at her.

"Am I?"

"Yes."

"Sorry."

"Don't be."

She looked ahead.

"Just don't disappear into it."

Brook didn't answer.

But he understood.

They walked.

Behind them, the white ridge slowly disappeared beneath Eden's trees.

The hallway remained somewhere beyond it.

The steel door remained closed.

Laboratory Nine remained forgotten.

And Brook carried the scrap marked B-01 against his chest.

He didn't know what it meant.

Not yet.

But for the first time, the question didn't feel like a hand around his throat.

It felt like a question.

Nothing more.

Brook walked beside his friends.

Henry was arguing with Charon.

Sera was complaining about both of them.

Gabriel was laughing.

Rick and Shoyo were talking quietly behind them.

Crowley walked alone for a while.

Then he looked at Brook.

Brook looked back.

Neither spoke.

But Crowley gave him the smallest nod.

Brook returned it.

And kept walking.

He was still angry.

Still curious.

Still afraid of what B-01 might mean.

But he was himself.

For today, that was enough.
