Chapter 279 — The Prize
The war did not begin that morning.
It had already begun.
The proof was in the road behind them.
Burned fields.
Broken carts.
Blood washed from the stones.
The town still stood, but the road leading away from it carried the marks of everything that had happened there.
Brook walked through the gray light before sunrise with his coat pulled tight around him.
The town was disappearing behind the trees.
He could still see a few roofs.
Smoke rose from chimneys that had survived the fighting.
People were awake.
Repairing.
Living.
That was the strange part.
The war had passed through them and kept moving.
Brook wondered how many other places would be next.
Then Crowley said, "Don't."
Brook looked over.
"Don't what?"
"Start counting."
Brook looked ahead.
"I wasn't."
Crowley gave him a sideways glance.
"You were."
Brook said nothing.
Henry walked behind them.
"I don't understand how he knows when you're thinking."
"He doesn't," Sera said.
Crowley answered at the same time.
"He does."
Henry looked between them.
"That was creepy."
Crowley kept walking.
"Good."
Henry sighed.
"I'm surrounded by strange people."
Charon appeared beside his face.
"You're the strangest."
"I'm normal."
"No."
Henry looked at Brook.
"Am I normal?"
Brook thought about it.
"No."
Henry looked wounded.
"Traitor."
Sera smiled.
The sound didn't last.
A bird flew from the trees.
Then another.
Brook noticed.
He stopped.
Crowley stopped.
Gabriel looked toward the horizon.
"Movement."
Brook turned.
The road ahead was empty.
Then something appeared through the mist.
A white figure.
Then another.
Then another.
Heaven.
Gabriel's wings opened.
"Everyone back."
Brook looked behind them.
Darkness was gathering there too.
Hell.
The road had become a corridor.
Heaven ahead.
Hell behind.
The group stood between them.
Henry stared.
"Oh, that's bad."
Rick drew his weapon.
Shoyo lifted her staff.
Tala stepped closer to Brook.
Sera opened her notebook.
Crowley rolled his shoulders.
Brook looked at Gabriel.
"How many?"
Gabriel's eyes tracked the figures.
"Enough."
Crowley looked behind them.
"Same."
Brook breathed out.
"So this is it."
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
Brook looked at him.
"This isn't about the town."
Gabriel's eyes hardened.
"No."
He looked toward the approaching Heaven forces.
"They're not here for the town."
Brook already knew.
He could feel it.
The attention.
Every weapon.
Every gaze.
Every movement was centered on one point.
Him.
A Heaven captain stepped forward.
The mist moved around his armor.
His voice carried down the road.
"Brook Smith."
Brook didn't answer.
The captain raised his sword.
"Come willingly."
Crowley laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
"No."
The captain looked toward him.
"You are not being addressed."
Crowley stepped forward.
"Then address me."
The captain's eyes narrowed.
"You stand beside stolen property."
Brook's face hardened.
Gabriel stepped forward.
"He is not property."
The captain looked at Gabriel.
"You abandoned Heaven for him."
Gabriel's expression remained calm.
"I chose Xcution."
The captain's grip tightened around his sword.
"You'll answer for that."
Gabriel raised his blade.
"Later."
A second voice came from behind them.
"Enough."
The Hell formation parted.
The captain from the previous encounter walked through.
Brook recognized him.
The same armor.
The same voice.
The same hatred.
He stopped when he saw Crowley.
"King."
Crowley stared at him.
"You again."
The captain's eyes moved toward Brook.
Then back to Crowley.
"The boy comes with us."
Crowley said nothing.
The captain smiled.
"Or we take him."
Crowley took one step forward.
"You won't."
The captain looked toward Heaven.
Then toward Hell.
Then at Brook.
"Heaven wants him."
His eyes narrowed.
"Hell wants him."
He pointed toward Brook.
"And he is the reason we're both here."
The words settled over the road.
Henry whispered,
"I really hate being right."
Sera glanced at him.
"You haven't said anything."
"I was thinking."
Charon said,
"Dangerous."
Brook looked from Heaven to Hell.
Two armies.
One road.
Him in the middle.
The thought should have frightened him.
Instead, it made something inside him go quiet.
He understood.
The town had never been the target.
The fields.
The houses.
The people.
They had simply been where the war happened.
The real fight had followed him.
Brook stepped forward.
Gabriel reached for his arm.
Brook stopped him.
"No."
Gabriel looked at him.
"I need to—"
"No."
Brook looked down the road.
"They came for me."
Gabriel's expression tightened.
"Yes."
"Then let them."
Crowley stepped beside him.
"They don't get you."
Brook looked at Crowley.
"I didn't say they would."
Crowley nodded.
"Good."
The Heaven captain raised his sword.
"Last offer."
Brook looked at him.
"No."
The Hell captain smiled.
"Then we take the prize."
Brook's eyes hardened.
"I heard you."
The Hell captain lifted his hand.
The road behind Brook erupted.
Black fire tore through the dirt.
Brook jumped aside.
At the same moment, Heaven attacked from the front.
White spears fell.
Gabriel moved.
His wings snapped open.
The first spear shattered against his shield.
The second struck his blade.
The third missed Brook by inches.
Gabriel launched forward.
He hit the Heaven line like a falling star.
Three soldiers went down.
Brook turned.
Hell was already moving.
Crowley met them.
His fist struck the first demon in the chest.
The impact sent it across the road.
Another swung.
Crowley ducked.
He drove his elbow into the demon's ribs.
Brook moved toward the center.
"Stay together!"
Henry grabbed Sera.
"Where?"
"Anywhere near us!"
"That isn't a location!"
"It is today!"
A demon charged.
Henry raised his weapon.
The demon knocked him backward.
Brook intercepted it.
He punched it once.
The demon staggered.
Brook struck again.
The Devil's Instinct surged.
Finish.
His body wanted the clean movement.
The final strike.
Brook's fist stopped inches from the demon's throat.
He pulled back.
The demon stared at him.
Brook kicked it away.
"Stay down."
It didn't.
It came again.
Brook ducked.
The demon swung.
Brook caught the arm.
He twisted.
The joint cracked.
The demon screamed.
Brook released it.
"Stay."
The demon backed away.
Brook turned.
A Heaven soldier attacked from his blind side.
Gabriel caught the blade.
"Behind you."
Brook turned.
"Thanks."
Gabriel shoved the soldier away.
Brook kicked him in the chest.
The soldier flew backward.
Gabriel looked at Brook.
"You're getting surrounded."
"I noticed."
"Then move."
Brook moved.
The battlefield stretched across the road.
Heaven on one side.
Hell on the other.
Xcution in the middle.
It wasn't a formation.
It wasn't organized.
It was survival.
Sera shouted words that became force.
"DOWN!"
Brook dropped.
A blade passed over his head.
"LEFT!"
He moved.
A spear struck where he'd been standing.
"CLOSE!"
The ground around them tightened into a defensive circle.
Sera's Word Magic wasn't elegant.
It was practical.
Every word had purpose.
Henry stayed near her.
His light flickered.
Four seconds.
Five.
Then vanished.
"Again!" Sera shouted.
Henry raised his hand.
The light returned.
He grinned.
"Five!"
"You said six yesterday."
"I lied."
"I know."
A demon broke through.
Henry's light flashed.
The creature recoiled.
Henry stared.
"That worked."
Sera struck it with a word.
The demon fell.
Henry looked impressed.
"I helped."
"Don't get excited."
"I helped."
"You did."
Henry smiled.
Then a Heaven soldier came through the smoke.
Henry's smile disappeared.
Sera stepped in front of him.
"Behind me."
Henry moved.
The soldier attacked.
Sera's word struck first.
"BREAK."
The sword shattered.
Henry stared.
"That's useful."
Sera looked at him.
"Run."
They ran.
Tala fought near the edge of the road.
She wasn't attacking.
She was keeping the ground from becoming impossible.
Every time a Heaven strike damaged the road, she pushed dirt back into place.
Every time Hell fire burned across the grass, she smothered it with soil.
She looked exhausted.
Brook saw her.
"Tala!"
She looked up.
"I'm fine."
Brook almost laughed.
"You're learning from me."
She smiled.
"Unfortunately."
A Hell soldier charged her.
Brook started toward them.
Tala raised one hand.
"Don't."
The ground shifted.
The soldier stumbled.
Tala struck him with the end of her staff.
He fell.
Brook stopped.
Tala looked at him.
"Keep moving."
Brook nodded.
He moved.
The Heaven captain came for him.
Brook saw the sword before he saw the man.
He ducked.
The blade cut through the air above him.
Brook drove his shoulder into the captain's chest.
The captain staggered.
Brook punched him.
The captain blocked.
Heaven strength met human strength.
Brook's feet slid backward.
The captain struck again.
Brook raised his forearm.
Pain exploded through his arm.
He stepped sideways.
The captain followed.
Brook kicked his knee.
The captain barely moved.
Brook punched his ribs.
Nothing.
The captain swung.
Brook ducked.
The sword cut his coat.
Brook grabbed the captain's wrist.
The captain twisted.
Brook was thrown across the road.
He hit the dirt.
Rolled.
Came up.
The captain approached.
"You cannot defeat Heaven."
Brook wiped blood from his mouth.
"I don't have to."
The captain attacked.
Brook moved.
The sword missed.
Brook struck the captain's throat.
The captain stumbled.
Brook kicked his knee.
The captain dropped to one knee.
Brook stepped forward.
The instinct surged.
Kill.
His hand moved.
Then stopped.
The captain looked up.
Brook stared down at him.
"You're fighting for something you don't even understand."
The captain snarled.
"You're the reason the world is breaking."
Brook's expression hardened.
"No."
He stepped away.
"I'm just the person you keep chasing."
The captain stood.
He attacked again.
Brook didn't wait.
He moved inside the blade.
His forehead struck the captain's face.
The captain staggered.
Brook hit him in the ribs.
Then the stomach.
Then the jaw.
The captain fell.
Brook stood over him.
The captain reached for his sword.
Brook kicked it away.
"Stay down."
The captain looked at him.
Brook turned away.
The captain tried to rise.
Gabriel landed beside him.
One hand on the sword.
"Don't."
The captain stared at Gabriel.
"You're protecting him."
Gabriel looked toward Brook.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Gabriel's eyes hardened.
"Because he is not yours."
He turned away.
The captain remained on the ground.
Crowley was having a different conversation.
The Hell captain attacked him with a blade.
Crowley blocked with his forearm.
The blade cut his sleeve.
Crowley grabbed the captain by the throat.
"You're persistent."
The captain smiled.
"You're avoiding the obvious."
Crowley slammed him into the road.
"What obvious thing?"
"You know what he is."
Crowley released him.
The captain coughed.
Crowley stared.
"Don't."
The captain smiled.
"You're afraid of what happens when he finds out."
Crowley punched him.
The captain hit the ground.
Crowley stood over him.
"I said don't."
The captain wiped blood from his mouth.
"You can keep him moving."
Crowley's expression changed.
"You can keep lying."
Crowley hit him again.
The captain rolled away.
"You can't stop both sides."
Crowley walked toward him.
"I don't need to."
The captain looked at him.
"Then what are you doing?"
Crowley stopped.
"Keeping my promise."
The words came so quietly that only the Hell captain heard them.
The captain's eyes narrowed.
"What promise?"
Crowley stared at him.
"Nothing you'll ever understand."
He struck him again.
Brook heard the words from a distance.
Not the promise.
The earlier exchange.
Something about both sides.
Something about him being the reason.
He looked around.
Heaven and Hell weren't fighting each other anymore.
They were both fighting toward him.
The realization came hard.
"Everyone!"
Gabriel looked at him.
"Brook?"
"Stop fighting them."
Gabriel frowned.
"What?"
"They want me."
Crowley looked over.
Brook pointed toward the road.
"They're not trying to win."
The Heaven captain was already standing.
The Hell captain was recovering.
Both were looking at Brook.
Brook continued.
"They're trying to take me."
Crowley nodded.
"I know."
"Then we use it."
Sera looked at him.
"How?"
Brook stared at the two armies.
"They're in each other's way."
Henry blinked.
"So?"
Brook looked at him.
"We don't have to beat both."
Henry understood.
"Oh."
Brook turned toward Gabriel.
"Can you hold Heaven?"
Gabriel smiled.
"I can."
Brook looked toward Crowley.
"Can you hold Hell?"
Crowley looked at the approaching demons.
"Yes."
Brook nodded.
"Then we make them fight for the road."
Crowley gave him a faint smile.
"There you are."
Brook frowned.
"What?"
"Thinking."
Crowley turned.
"Move."
The battlefield changed.
Gabriel charged Heaven.
Crowley charged Hell.
Brook went between them.
Every time Heaven tried to reach him, Gabriel intercepted.
Every time Hell pushed through, Crowley broke the formation.
Brook moved through the gaps.
He wasn't hiding.
He was making himself impossible to reach.
A Heaven soldier lunged.
Brook stepped aside.
A Hell soldier attacked.
Brook ducked.
Their weapons collided.
Brook kicked the Hell soldier backward.
The Heaven soldier swung.
Brook shoved him into another angel.
Then moved.
The two sides began striking each other.
Not because they wanted to.
Because Brook kept moving.
The prize was running through their battlefield.
And neither side could reach him.
Sera laughed once.
"This is insane."
Rick blocked a sword.
"It's working."
Shoyo's staff struck the ground.
"Then don't stop."
Henry's light flared.
"Six!"
Sera looked at him.
"What?"
"Six seconds!"
The light vanished.
Henry stared.
"I did six."
Charon appeared.
"You did."
Henry grinned.
"I told you."
"You were wrong yesterday."
"I was practicing."
Brook ran.
He crossed the road.
Jumped a broken cart.
Rolled beneath a blade.
Came up beside Gabriel.
"Still good?"
Gabriel blocked two attacks.
"Excellent."
"That's a lie."
"Partially."
Brook smiled.
Gabriel struck the nearest soldier.
Brook moved on.
He reached Crowley.
Crowley punched a demon away.
"Still alive?"
Brook nodded.
"Unfortunately."
Crowley smiled.
"Good."
Brook looked ahead.
The two armies were beginning to separate.
They had realized what was happening.
The Heaven captain shouted.
"Do not let him escape!"
The Hell captain shouted at the same time.
"Take him!"
Brook stopped.
Both sides advanced.
He looked at them.
Then at Crowley.
Crowley nodded.
Gabriel landed beside them.
Sera and Henry joined.
Rick.
Shoyo.
Tala.
The group gathered.
For a moment, the battlefield went quiet.
Brook stood in the center.
He looked at Heaven.
Then Hell.
Then his own people.
The Heaven captain raised his sword.
The Hell captain raised his blade.
Brook breathed in.
He didn't make a speech.
He didn't tell them they were wrong.
He didn't tell them he belonged to nobody.
He simply stepped forward.
"Come get me."
Both armies charged.
Crowley smiled.
Gabriel raised his sword.
Sera opened her notebook.
Henry's light appeared.
Tala planted her feet.
Rick drew his weapon.
Shoyo lifted her staff.
Brook lowered his stance.
Then the road disappeared beneath them in a storm of bodies, steel, light, and fire.
The war had started long before this moment.
But now it had a center.
Brook.
Not a town.
Not a kingdom.
Not a road.
Him.
And for the first time, both Heaven and Hell stopped pretending otherwise.
