Chapter 280 — The Archangel
The first Heaven soldier reached Brook before the others.
Gabriel intercepted him.
Steel struck steel.
The impact rang across the road.
Gabriel twisted his blade and drove the soldier backward.
Another came from the left.
Gabriel turned.
His wing snapped outward.
The angel was thrown sideways.
Brook ducked beneath a third strike and drove his fist into the attacker's ribs.
The soldier staggered.
Brook hit him again.
Then the road disappeared beneath a wave of movement.
Heaven from the east.
Hell from the west.
Xcution caught between them.
Nobody had time to think about what the battlefield had become.
They simply fought.
Brook moved.
A sword passed his face.
He stepped inside the attack.
Elbow.
Knee.
Shoulder.
The soldier fell.
Brook turned.
Another was already there.
He blocked.
Pain traveled through his wrist.
The soldier pushed.
Brook's boots scraped backward.
Then Henry's light flashed between them.
The Heaven soldier recoiled.
Brook kicked him away.
"Thanks."
Henry raised his hand.
"Five seconds!"
Sera shouted from behind him.
"You don't have to announce it!"
"I was excited!"
"You're fighting!"
"I can multitask!"
A demon charged through the smoke.
Henry's smile disappeared.
"Oh."
Sera grabbed his coat and pulled him aside.
The demon's blade struck the ground.
Sera's hand moved.
"DOWN."
The word hit.
The demon dropped violently to one knee.
Henry struck it with his weapon.
It fell.
He stared.
"I helped again."
Sera looked at him.
"You did."
Henry grinned.
"I'm becoming useful."
"Don't get ambitious."
Brook heard them but couldn't look.
He had three soldiers around him.
One Heaven.
Two Hell.
They weren't working together.
They were competing.
The Heaven soldier attacked first.
Brook ducked.
One demon swung from behind.
Brook twisted.
The blade passed across his back.
Pain.
He stumbled forward.
The Heaven soldier came again.
Brook caught the wrist.
The demon attacked from the side.
Brook shoved the angel into its path.
Their weapons collided.
Brook kicked both of them apart.
The Devil's Instinct pressed against his ribs.
Clean.
Fast.
Finish.
His breathing changed.
The nearest demon was exposed.
Brook could see exactly where to strike.
The movement came naturally.
His shoulder turned.
His hand rose.
Then he remembered the last time.
The angel.
The throat.
Crowley's hand.
Henry's fingers on his sleeve.
Brook stopped.
The demon took advantage.
It punched him across the face.
Brook staggered.
The Instinct surged.
Let me.
Brook wiped blood from his mouth.
"No."
The demon attacked again.
Brook ducked.
He drove his fist into its stomach.
The demon folded.
Brook kicked it away.
He didn't finish it.
The second demon came.
Brook blocked.
The fight became close and ugly.
There was no clean movement.
No perfect strike.
Just fists, elbows, knees, dirt, blood, and the constant pressure of bodies trying to reach him.
Brook fought like a human.
That was the point.
He didn't need to be anything else.
Then the sky turned white.
Everyone stopped.
Not because the battle had ended.
Because something had arrived.
A figure descended through the smoke.
Six wings.
White armor.
A blade that seemed to carry its own light.
The Heaven soldiers backed away.
Even the Hell forces nearest him slowed.
Gabriel looked up.
His expression changed.
"Joshua."
Joshua landed in the middle of the road.
The impact cracked the stones.
He looked around.
At the burning fields.
At the broken road.
At Heaven's soldiers.
At Hell.
Then his eyes found Gabriel.
"You chose this."
Gabriel held his sword loosely.
"Yes."
Joshua's gaze moved to Brook.
"And you chose him."
Gabriel stepped forward.
"I chose them."
Joshua's expression hardened.
"Do you understand what you've done?"
Gabriel's wings spread.
"Yes."
"Then stand aside."
"No."
Joshua stared at him.
"You would raise your blade against Heaven?"
Gabriel lifted his sword.
"I already have."
The air changed.
Brook felt it.
This wasn't another captain.
This was different.
Joshua stood like someone who had never needed permission to enter a battlefield.
His wings stretched across the road.
His presence pressed against the soldiers around him.
Gabriel didn't move.
Joshua said quietly,
"Gabriel."
Gabriel answered,
"Joshua."
For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.
Then Joshua attacked.
Gabriel met him.
The collision exploded across the road.
Brook was thrown backward.
He rolled through dirt and came up on one knee.
Henry grabbed his shoulder.
"You good?"
Brook wiped his mouth.
"Yeah."
Henry looked at his face.
"That's another lie."
Brook stood.
"Later."
Across the battlefield, Gabriel and Joshua were already moving too fast for most of the soldiers to follow.
Gabriel's blade struck.
Joshua blocked.
Gabriel spun.
Joshua's wing caught the attack.
Joshua drove his elbow into Gabriel's chest.
Gabriel flew backward.
He stopped himself in midair.
His wings opened.
He launched forward.
Joshua met him.
Their blades collided.
The shockwave knocked nearby soldiers off their feet.
Brook stared.
Gabriel wasn't holding back.
Neither was Joshua.
This wasn't a demonstration.
It wasn't Gabriel proving that he could fight.
It was two Archangels fighting over a choice.
Joshua struck downward.
Gabriel blocked.
Joshua twisted his blade.
Gabriel's sword was knocked aside.
Joshua attacked.
Gabriel caught the weapon with his bare hand.
The blade cut his palm.
Gabriel didn't let go.
He stepped inside Joshua's guard.
His forehead struck Joshua's face.
Joshua staggered.
Gabriel kicked him backward.
Joshua's wings opened.
He stopped.
Blood ran from his nose.
He wiped it away.
"You've changed."
Gabriel raised his sword.
"No."
Joshua frowned.
"I've become more honest."
Joshua's expression hardened.
He attacked again.
Brook didn't watch for long.
Hell was moving.
The Hell captain had seen Joshua enter the fight.
He saw an opening.
"Take him!"
The order wasn't directed at Gabriel.
It was directed at Brook.
Three demons charged.
Brook turned.
One came high.
Brook blocked.
Another came low.
He jumped.
The third struck him in the stomach.
Brook folded.
The Devil's Instinct exploded through him.
Kill.
His fist moved before thought.
It struck the demon's jaw.
The demon flew backward.
Brook spun.
The second attacked.
Brook grabbed the arm.
He twisted.
The joint broke.
The demon screamed.
Brook released it.
The first returned.
Brook kicked it in the knee.
It dropped.
Brook stepped away.
"Stay down."
The demon rose.
Brook's fists tightened.
The clean kill was there.
One movement.
No struggle.
No uncertainty.
The Instinct offered it.
Brook breathed.
Then Henry shouted.
"Brook!"
Brook looked.
Henry was pinned against a wall by a Heaven soldier.
Sera was fighting two others.
Brook moved.
He left the demon behind.
He sprinted toward Henry.
The Heaven soldier raised his blade.
Brook tackled him.
They crashed through the wall.
Henry stumbled free.
Brook rolled across the floor.
The soldier attacked.
Brook blocked.
The blade cut his forearm.
Brook punched.
The soldier staggered.
Brook hit him again.
Then again.
The soldier fell.
Brook stopped.
He breathed hard.
Henry stared at him.
"You okay?"
Brook looked at the blood on his arm.
"Yeah."
Henry pointed.
"You're bleeding."
"So are you."
Henry looked at his own shirt.
"Oh."
Brook almost smiled.
"Exactly."
Then the wall behind them exploded.
A Hell demon came through.
Henry shouted.
Brook grabbed him and threw him aside.
The demon's blade missed.
Brook struck.
The demon struck back.
The room was too small.
Brook couldn't move properly.
The demon slammed him against the wall.
Brook's head hit stone.
His vision blurred.
The Instinct whispered again.
Let me.
Brook pushed it down.
He drove his knee into the demon.
It loosened its grip.
Brook twisted free.
He grabbed a broken piece of wood.
The demon attacked.
Brook drove the wood into its shoulder.
It screamed.
Brook kicked it away.
The demon crawled toward him.
Brook stood over it.
For one second, he almost finished it.
Then Henry's voice came from behind him.
"Brook."
Brook stopped.
Henry wasn't telling him what to do.
He was just saying his name.
Brook lowered the weapon.
"Get out."
The demon stared.
Brook turned away.
Outside, Gabriel and Joshua were still fighting.
The battle had spread across the town's outskirts.
Heaven soldiers were beginning to regroup.
Hell soldiers were doing the same.
Both armies were trying to reach Brook.
Neither was succeeding.
Crowley stood between Brook and Hell.
A demon captain attacked him.
Crowley caught the blade.
The captain snarled.
"Move."
Crowley didn't.
"You're standing in the way of a war."
Crowley looked at him.
"No."
He punched him.
The captain fell.
Crowley looked toward Brook.
"He's already in it."
Another demon attacked.
Crowley turned.
He blocked.
The demon swung again.
Crowley stepped inside.
His fist struck.
The demon flew into a wall.
Crowley walked after it.
The demon tried to rise.
Crowley kicked the weapon away.
"Stay."
The demon stared.
Crowley turned.
Another came.
He hit it too.
He didn't chase.
He didn't pursue the retreating soldiers.
He stayed where he was.
Between Brook and Hell.
That was enough.
Gabriel and Joshua crashed through a stone structure.
The roof collapsed.
Joshua emerged first.
Gabriel followed.
Joshua raised his sword.
Gabriel's wing slammed into him.
Joshua flew backward.
Gabriel landed.
Joshua recovered.
"Why?"
Gabriel looked at him.
"You know why."
"No."
Joshua advanced.
"You think choosing a group changes what you are?"
Gabriel raised his sword.
"No."
"You're still an Archangel."
"Yes."
"You still belong to Heaven."
Gabriel's eyes hardened.
"No."
Joshua stopped.
Gabriel continued.
"I was created by Heaven."
His grip tightened.
"That doesn't mean Heaven owns me."
Joshua attacked.
Gabriel blocked.
"You would abandon everything?"
"I didn't abandon everything."
Gabriel struck.
Joshua blocked.
"I abandoned obedience."
Joshua's blade cut across Gabriel's shoulder.
Gabriel winced.
Joshua attacked again.
Gabriel ducked.
His wing struck Joshua's chest.
Joshua staggered.
Gabriel followed.
Sword.
Wing.
Elbow.
Knee.
Joshua blocked each attack.
Then Joshua caught Gabriel's sword arm.
He twisted.
Gabriel dropped his blade.
Joshua struck.
Gabriel caught the punch.
The two stood face-to-face.
Joshua whispered,
"You'll regret this."
Gabriel looked into his eyes.
"Maybe."
Joshua punched.
Gabriel took the hit.
Blood came from his mouth.
He didn't fall.
He drove his forehead into Joshua's.
Joshua staggered.
Gabriel picked up his sword.
Then raised it.
Joshua stepped back.
For the first time, Heaven's line hesitated.
Their Archangel had been beaten back.
Not defeated.
Not broken.
But pushed.
Gabriel stood.
His wings were damaged.
His shoulder was bleeding.
His breathing was heavier.
But he was still standing.
Joshua looked at him.
"You've become stubborn."
Gabriel smiled faintly.
"No."
He raised the sword.
"I've always been."
Joshua attacked again.
Brook returned to the road.
The battlefield was worse.
Smoke obscured half the field.
Fire burned across the grass.
Heaven's white armor moved through it.
Hell's black armor moved through the opposite side.
And in the center—
Xcution.
Brook saw Sera.
She was bleeding from her forehead.
Henry stood beside her.
Rick had blood on one sleeve.
Shoyo was protecting a group of civilians who had not managed to escape the town.
Tala stood with both hands pressed against the earth.
Crowley was fighting three demons.
Brook looked toward Gabriel.
He was still fighting Joshua.
Brook breathed out.
"Everyone's still alive."
Sera heard him.
"For now."
Brook looked at her.
"That's encouraging."
"It wasn't meant to be."
Henry stepped beside him.
"You're bleeding again."
Brook looked down.
"So are you."
Henry looked at his arm.
"Oh."
Sera sighed.
"You two are impossible."
Brook smiled.
Then the Heaven captain from earlier approached.
His sword was gone.
His armor was damaged.
But he was still standing.
He looked at Brook.
"Come with us."
Brook shook his head.
"No."
"You don't understand what is happening."
"Probably not."
"You are the center of this."
Brook looked around.
"I know."
"You cannot keep running."
Brook stared at him.
"I don't need to."
The captain frowned.
Brook stepped forward.
"You keep coming to me."
The captain raised his weapon.
Brook raised his fists.
"You're the one running."
The captain attacked.
Brook met him.
The fight was brutal.
The captain was stronger.
Brook was faster.
The sword cut his shoulder.
Brook punched the captain's ribs.
The captain struck him across the face.
Brook stumbled.
The captain swung.
Brook ducked.
He grabbed the captain's wrist.
The captain kicked him.
Brook fell.
The captain raised the blade.
Brook rolled.
The sword struck the ground.
Brook kicked the captain's ankle.
He fell.
Brook grabbed his arm.
The captain twisted.
Brook hit him.
Again.
Again.
The captain's helmet cracked.
Brook stopped.
He could finish it.
The Instinct pushed.
His fist tightened.
The captain looked at him.
"Do it."
Brook stared.
"Why?"
"Because that's what you are."
Brook's expression hardened.
"No."
He released him.
The captain stared.
Brook stepped away.
"That's what you want me to be."
The captain rose.
"You'll kill eventually."
"Maybe."
Brook turned.
"But not because you told me to."
The captain attacked from behind.
Gabriel appeared.
His sword stopped the strike.
Gabriel looked at the captain.
"Enough."
The captain backed away.
Brook looked at Gabriel.
"You okay?"
Gabriel smiled.
"I'm fine."
Brook stared at his bleeding shoulder.
"Liar."
Gabriel laughed.
"Fair."
Joshua landed behind him.
Gabriel turned immediately.
Brook stepped back.
Joshua looked at him.
For a second, Brook thought Joshua would attack.
He didn't.
Joshua looked toward the battlefield.
Then toward Gabriel.
"You've made your choice."
Gabriel raised his sword.
"Yes."
Joshua's wings spread.
"Then Heaven will remember."
Gabriel's expression didn't change.
"Let it."
Joshua rose into the air.
The remaining Heaven soldiers began pulling back.
Brook watched.
"They're leaving?"
Gabriel shook his head.
"Not leaving."
Joshua looked down from the sky.
"Withdraw."
The soldiers obeyed.
The line broke.
They retreated east.
Hell saw it.
The Hell captain shouted.
"Advance!"
Crowley moved.
He intercepted the first wave.
"Not through here."
The demons attacked him.
Crowley fought.
Gabriel joined.
Brook moved toward Sera.
The Hell army kept coming.
But Heaven had withdrawn.
The battlefield became narrower.
Crowley and Gabriel held the line.
Brook stood behind them.
Neither army had taken him.
Neither had even touched him long enough to move him from where he chose to stand.
Joshua disappeared beyond the clouds.
The Hell captain remained.
He looked at Brook.
Then Crowley.
Then Gabriel.
His expression darkened.
"Another day."
Crowley wiped blood from his knuckles.
"Bring better people."
The captain snarled.
Hell began retreating.
Brook watched them disappear into the western fields.
The road became quiet.
Not peaceful.
Just quiet.
The fires remained.
Bodies remained.
Broken weapons remained.
The town behind them remained.
Damaged.
Alive.
Brook looked at Gabriel.
"You won."
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
Brook frowned.
"You beat him."
"I stood."
Brook looked at him.
Gabriel sheathed his sword.
"That's different."
Brook didn't argue.
Crowley walked toward them.
His coat was torn.
His face was bruised.
Brook looked at him.
"You're bleeding."
Crowley glanced down.
"So are you."
"Mine's worse."
Crowley nodded.
"Probably."
Henry approached.
"Is everyone done?"
Sera looked at him.
"For now."
Henry sat down.
"Excellent."
Brook looked toward the road.
The battlefield stretched into the distance.
Two armies had come for him.
Neither had taken him.
The war had not ended.
It had only moved.
Brook looked at Gabriel.
"Joshua will come back."
Gabriel nodded.
"I know."
Crowley looked west.
"Hell too."
Brook nodded.
Then he looked down at his hands.
The Devil's Instinct was quiet.
For now.
He had felt it offering him an easy ending.
He had refused.
Again.
That mattered.
Maybe.
He didn't know yet.
Sera came beside him.
"You still thinking about yesterday?"
Brook looked at her.
"The hole?"
She nodded.
"No."
He looked toward the ruined town.
"Today."
Sera followed his gaze.
"That's enough."
Brook nodded.
They stood together.
Behind them, the people of the town began rebuilding.
Ahead of them, the road waited.
And somewhere far beyond the fields, Heaven was already reorganizing.
Hell was already moving.
The war had found its center.
Brook.
But the center had not moved.
