Her growl deepened. The muscles in her arms flexed as she tried to reach him, but the gaps between the bars were too narrow. Her claws scraped, sparks flying as they failed to break through. She held closed her fingers at the metal bar instead.

 

Zek's chest ached—not from his wound but from the sight of her. The woman who once smiled at him when they embraced each other under the moonlight, who once purred for his touch and each other's warmth, now saw him as a threat.

 

Slowly, he lifted a hand and touched her closed fingers against the metal bar. He felt the mating tattoo in his chest pulsed like it had become alive. She flinched as his fingers brushed hers, but she didn't withdraw them. She only growled at him. Still, he reached out, feeling the warmth of her rough skin even through the wispy white fur.
