One week passed after Tony Stark's press conference in California. It was late May 2008.
A European trade delegation arrived at the Presidential Palace in Zubrovka.
Three corporate envoys in tailored grey suits sat across the conference table, demanding an immediate on-site inspection of Sokovia's northern foundries.
"Your sudden production of export-grade structural alloys violates regional manufacturing agreements," the lead envoy stated, tapping a heavy leather folio.
"Unless European consortiums are granted thirty percent equity in your state mills, our governments will enforce severe import tariffs on Sokovian agricultural produce."
Adrian sat at the head of the table.
Wanda sat quietly to his left, her hands resting over a plain notebook.
Behind her psionic firewall, Wanda calmly parsed the surface thoughts of the three envoys.
She leaned slightly toward Adrian, her voice flat and clear: "Their home ministries are facing a five-month grain deficit. They have no legal mandate to enforce sanctions. They were sent by private industrial lobbies hoping our new government would panic."
The lead envoy's posture went completely rigid.
Inside Adrian's mind, Sophia's voice chimed silently, delivering the real-time logistics data without alerting the foreign diplomats.
<< Sophia: European agricultural reserves are operating thirty-two percent below median winter projections. Seventy percent of Central European commercial rail freight to southern ports passes directly through Sokovian junctions. >>
Adrian did not display an advanced AI or reveal automated algorithms to foreign visitors. An emerging nation repairing its own rails was dismissed as simple regional reconstruction, but an advanced artificial intelligence would draw immediate surveillance from foreign intelligence agencies.
Instead, Adrian simply pulled a standard printed rail map forward and looked directly at the lead envoy.
"Enforce your tariffs," Adrian said evenly.
"The moment you file the paperwork, Sokovia places a twenty percent sovereign transit surcharge on every foreign freight car crossing our tracks."
"Your factories will run out of grain before our silos even drop five percent."
The three envoys exchanged pale, nervous glances.
Without another word, the lead envoy pulled out a fountain pen, signed the standard sovereign trade recognition forms on the table, and packed his briefcase.
The delegation left Zubrovka before sunset without a single share of domestic equity.
Two weeks passed. By June 12, 2008, Sokovia's domestic supply lines were operating without outside interference.
Behind locked doors in the private executive office, Adrian accessed his private console.
Sophia's interface was strictly confined to this secure terminal, invisible to the rest of the palace staff. Her voice spoke directly into Adrian's thoughts as encrypted American data scrolled across the green screen.
<< Sophia: Signals intelligence update from America. >>
<< Priority Target: Stark Industries. >>
<< Details: Interim CEO Obadiah Stane has filed an emergency board injunction attempting to freeze Tony Stark's executive voting rights following the termination of weapons production. >>
<< Intercepted Manifest: Multiple crates of high-durability gold-titanium aerospace alloy were delivered under private registry directly to Stark's residential workshop in Malibu. >>
Pietro leaned over the desk, chewing on a dried apple slice. "The man shuts down his missile division, but he's buying fighter-jet armor for his house? What is he building in his garage?"
"Something personal," Adrian answered. "When an engineer like Stark gets attacked in a war zone, he doesn't hire extra bodyguards. He builds a shield."
Sophia routed a secondary military intercept into Adrian's thoughts.
<< Sophia: Secondary Target: US Department of Defense, General Thaddeus Ross. >>
<< Details: Encrypted communications intercepted between an unlisted server in Rio de Janeiro labeled 'Mr. Green' and a cellular biology terminal at Culver University labeled 'Mr. Blue'. >>
<< Tactical Movement: General Ross has deployed an elite tactical strike team to South America under the operational command of British commando Captain Emil Blonsky. >>
<< Tertiary Intercept: S.H.I.E.L.D. administrative log. Agent Phil Coulson has made four formal requests to interview Tony Stark regarding his escape from Afghanistan. All appointments were canceled by Stark's personal assistant. >>
Wanda crossed her arms, watching the green text scroll by. "The American military is chasing a ghost in South America, their biggest defense company is tearing itself apart, and their intelligence agents can't even get past a front desk."
"That keeps their eyes off Eastern Europe," Adrian said. "Let them stay busy."
The next morning, Adrian, Wanda, and Pietro descended into the decommissioned transit tunnels beneath the capital.
The three-mile straightaway had been lined with freshly cast alloy test plates from the mountain foundries.
Pietro sat on an equipment crate, strapping on a pair of streamlined grey boots and shin guards forged from the new high-density metal.
"These feel half as heavy as standard steel," Pietro said, bouncing on his heels. "Let's see if they hold up against friction."
He leaned forward, took a breath, and accelerated.
BOOM.
A sharp sonic boom echoed down the concrete tunnel as Pietro shattered the sound barrier. A blast of compressed wind swept down the tracks, kicking up loose gravel.
Two seconds later, he skidded to a clean stop at the far end of the three-mile run, turning back with a wide grin.
The alloy boots showed zero surface warping and no friction burn marks.
Across the platform, Wanda raised both hands, her dark eyes flashing red.
She fired a concentrated blast of crimson kinetic energy straight into a reinforced alloy plate thirty yards away.
The impact hit with the deafening force of an artillery shell, ringing through the tunnel like a massive church bell.
The structural alloy plate held firm, showing only a shallow scorch mark on its surface.
Her breathing remained steady and smooth, fully protected by her mental firewall.
Heavy boots echoed down the metal stairs from the upper platform.
Inspector Radovan hurried down the steps, carrying a locked military courier case.
"Mr. President," Radovan reported, coming to a halt. "Our northern border patrol intercepted an unmarked all-terrain vehicle two miles outside the mountain facility."
"Smugglers?" Pietro asked, jogging back across the track in an instant.
"Private intelligence contractors," Radovan replied. "Three men equipped with American satellite uplinks and directional thermal scanners. They were attempting to map the electrical draw of our underground foundries."
"Did they transmit any coordinates?" Adrian asked.
"No, sir. We jammed their satellite link before they cleared the ridge."
"Bring them to the central security wing," Adrian instructed calmly.
"Do we put them on trial for espionage?" Wanda asked.
"A public trial creates diplomatic friction we don't need," Adrian said, walking toward the lift.
"I'll have Sophia fabricate false survey logs showing an abandoned salt mine, and I'll rewrite their memories to match it. They will return to their employers convinced the valley is empty rock."
Adrian stepped into the elevator, looking back at his team.
"Our manufacturing stays private, and our borders stay closed. Let's secure the facility."
