Alan was momentarily at a loss when Alex's questions landed. He obviously couldn't tell her the truth, that it was her mother who'd made the engagement promise with the Jensens, that she'd been the chosen one all along. He feared that if she found out, she might turn difficult, and that would serve him no good. So he chose to bury the truth, unaware that Alex already knew every word of it.
"What are you talking about?" He laughed nervously, trying to mask his discomfort. "Both our families arranged this engagement before you were even born, so how could they possibly want only you? I simply think you're the best option. Since you already work at their company, you can bring them even more profit. Both families felt you were the ideal choice."
