For a while, neither of them spoke. Alex stayed against Eliott's chest, listening to his heartbeat and trying to follow the breathing her doctor had taught her. Her hands still shook, but the room was beginning to come back into focus. The wardrobe was closed now. The door was locked. Eliott was beside her.
When she could finally speak, she said, "I'm sorry I worried you."
Eliott drew back enough to look at her. His forehead was damp, and he still had one arm tight around her. "You don't have to apologize for being scared."
"I made it worse by keeping the messages from you."
"You should have told me." His voice softened. "But what happened tonight isn't your fault, Alex. The people who threatened you chose to do this."
