Chapter 160 - Chapter 3

As I flew I saw another barrier but this time it was too late. But for some weird reason it let me pass like I was one of them. I recalled killing one of the aliens and so it is possible that it assumes that I am one of them. My body modifies itself with each new blood sample. So I came down and tested what I looked like if I went full beast mode. I was invisible for safety's sake and changed into my usual twenty feet self. I looked around and found the place Kiska mentioned. I changed back to my normal self and flew at top speed. I took the direction of the train tracks as he had mentioned and found myself in front of what was left of October. I was told by Sam that I was going off course again. So I went up as far as possible to find a familiar place and found none. All were wrecked so I stayed up till I found a military camp. I snuck in and searched their map to charter my course. I restored it back to the way it was before and quietly listened for possible trouble. Once I knew my heading I snuck out and bolted. I was outside Saber territory in no time. I reached the rickety bridge still standing. I ran at the speed of light. Oleg was waiting by the steps and he was the first to welcome me. The others were inside waiting to welcome me officially.

I got in and after the usual formalities I was escorted to my room for a change of clothes. Roland was waiting outside but he was teasing Kiska for his terrible instructions. He said that I am still on the learning curve but Kiska is the expert stargazer. So for him to make a mistake is the butt of the joke. A few jokes were passed around. Amongst the most popular was what do you call a canine with no direction. A where wolf. Soren and Oleg's favorite was 'I wonder what happened to the person I gave directions to'. Kiska would be walking red faced all over the place and his sister would happily tease him harder than anything that Roland had to say. I would shake my head, "And they say I am immature. Guys just let it go" Both shook their heads as they walked off. One of the guards said that levity was a way of passing time. Sometimes it is childish but sometimes it is mature. Just go with the flow. The vampires are seen tutting for these moments when the guards would talk to me freely but like I said I treat them like family so they have nothing to fear. I took a deep breath and extended the shield and made sure to convince the Chthonians to stay well away from us. The council made sure to have a few Chthonians posted here and there so the humans won't bother them. I noticed that the nocturnals were dressed unusually. The vampires were dressed like they were in the era of Queen Victoria herself or were going to play a polo game. The werewolves were dressed like cowboys, Native Americans, Eskimos, vikings and Maoris. I waved and they would happily wave back.

As always they would nudge me to go upstairs and stay put like a princess. But I am used to guard duty so I would make myself at home by the front gates. I would connect with them so they would have a better idea to be safe and sound. So they didn't complain. Soon a few human stragglers arrived and Sam asked for the scrambler so they can't summon humans who eventually evict us. This was a problem a military convoy was not far away and they heard the message before the signal broke. The guys waited patiently as the soldiers arrived. They asked for a sanctuary for the people. Sam said that he may be the ruler but this is my home so I am the one they must bargain with. I said yes in exchange they had better behave themselves and stop declaring sections of my house off limits or bring any sort of experiments to supposedly create or cure the zombie hoard. Sam and the council concurred. The entire Nocturnal population agreed in one voice. The people will be allowed in after a thorough inspection. This didn't sit well with a few but they were told to shut up. The science division was sent to a different location while the others came in their thousands. The humans were told that once the fight was over they would be made to forget this place and be evicted. I had no problems with that idea and so did the others.

The humans came up the roof to make themselves at home and saw me sitting with a few werewolves. They asked politely to make ourselves scarce as they were setting up their gears. I told them with the greatest respect that this is my house and this is one of the places I stay guard to protect my family. They are welcome to share it if they behave themselves. They scratched their heads and started setting up their weapons. Rifles, shoulder mounted rockets, a few pairs of binoculars and a small radar system. The soldiers watched as we took our position. They looked in different directions and gave us the binoculars. I chuckled, "Our sight works better than those. Keep it to yourselves." They stared in amazement. One of them asked me how good my eyesight was and the nearest said to mind his own business. He also requested that they turn off the radar since I am on duty. I am scanning the area for anomalies. When the sun rose my Oleg came and carried me. He ignored my pleas as he carried me inside. The werewolves were grinning as they went inside and the next batch came out to stand guard. These werewolves were nicknamed the roughhousers. Not for jokes these people are merciless if you get on their bad side.

I was taken to the library to enjoy the restored books. The covers reminded me of a time I was requested to stay hidden. I was after I had self-retired from my job as a police officer. I got a job as a waitress. I was helping an elderly couple with their groceries. I was on my way to my apartment when I heard footsteps. They were very subtle. Had I not been nocturnal I wouldn't have heard it. I turned around to see a smiling man wielding a knife at first I ran like crazy. I hid behind a dumpster and I saw myself bewildered. I thought to myself. How pathetic are you? What are you? Answer me! What are you? I whispered, "An Apex predator" immediately I felt an adrenaline rush course through my body as though it was getting ready to fight. I looked around for security cameras and found none. So I made my invisible and charged forward. The entire time I am yelling at myself. I was angry with myself. I said to myself. How you could be so weak. How could you be so stupid. Why the heck did you hide? You were a cop. You used to fight zombies. You protected your friends from harm. Why did one puny man with a knife cause you to run like a baby. This had better never happen again. The next time this happens go head on and smash their skull like a coconut. I better hear the satisfactory sound of his cracking skull.

I ran at top speed and slid to sweep. He fell face first and he got and growled. I laughed at the sound and he turned and promised that it the sunrise that I will see. So I let out my monster roar and he froze. He realized that I might be one of those non-humans that the locals were chatting about. He took a step back and another and another. I extended my nails and raked the wall and he ran like he had seen a monster. I quickly caught him and made him forget he saw me and sent him home so I can go back to my life. I opened my eyes to see both sides were staring with mixed feelings. Most were proud that I didn't give into my animalistic urges and ripped him to pieces. Others were curious about his fate. I said that I sent an anonymous tip and he was arrested an hour later. They pulled out a young Hispanic girl in her teens. She was barely conscious. Her parents were grateful to have her home. The Native Americans and Maoris were grinning. My security stared at me incredulous. Roland had a lot of questions. Mostly if I was an anonymous tipper who used to phone in and help people find missing kids. I blushed eight shades of red and that was all the answer anyone needed. Everyone was pleased that I used my gifts even hiding for the benefit of the people.
