Chapter 161 - Chapter 4

As days went by the soldiers understood why the government wanted to exterminate my kind as they make a select few like me. The scientific community was banned from entry. They had no safe place to do tests or further experiments. They asked me to make an exception. They pleaded that I should look the other way as they did this for the betterment of mankind. I made it clear that if they wish to enter my house it means they have to follow my rules. If they set a single foot in this direction with anything remotely resembling zombie making material I will gladly rip their hearts from their chest. I promised to burn their precious project to ashes. We have enough problems as it is we don't need people creating more problems. The audience roared with approval. The other nocturnals promised to assist me. So the scientists had no choice but to go elsewhere. But they kept looking in our direction till they couldn't do it anymore. Chthonians scouts started sending hunter killers everywhere. An invisible robot that tracks heart beats. When it reaches its destination and goes boom. I have learned the ability to see these things so I lowered my heart rate and taught my family to do the same. We set a trap to destroy the HKs. The first was lasers. The next was magnetized land mines. The next was an EMP. The last was a magnetized platform that stops these things from going further. The problem was if anything with a heartbeat got near then it goes boom. So we have made a robot that defuses the explosive part from a distance so we can examine it at length.

The next few days the soldiers watched us from a distance. I asked them if they were eager to leave. Their response was no. I asked them nicely to stop getting stupid ideas. They asked me why I am taking my abilities for granted. I said that I have lived for seven hundred and seen the future become history. The only thing of value is integrity. If there is no honesty then there is only disorder. I have been accused of many things. I won't change my stance. My family is my life and I would gladly die for them. I have no desire for power. I only wish to make tomorrow better than today. I have seen people with no conscience given power and decimate entire cities. So I have placed myself out of the chessboard permanently. I drink poison to make sure that my blood or anything extracted from me will not be used to harm an innocent soul. Every life is precious and everyone as long as they don't commit crimes. I turned around to see Sam smiling. I bowed to him and he gave me a hug. He whispered, "You have done enough dear one. Now it is our turn to protect you." I nod my head and walked towards the swing and recalled the days when werewolves were not very friendly. I remember saving their lives after the military decided to blow up a building with them in it to kill a bunch of intelligent ones. I remember running in and out to rescue them one by one. I hid because I had a healthy respect for them. But I had no clue why they detested me. I watched from a distance as the soldier lied through his teeth. The werewolves gave him a look that said 'come with something better cover story than that' I recalled another time a soldier was fed up with being second best so he decided to shoot werewolves as target practice. He and his sniper buddy agreed and opened fire. A bullet grazed one of them in the ear before I reached them. I remember dragging him to safety so he wouldn't die. Then I quietly got the rest of them to safety too. I remember whispering, "Stay down the soldiers have turned on you. They want you dead. Wait for my signal and run. Get as far from here as possible. These people can never be trusted. Jealousy has reared its ugly head." The wolf promised to do so as I ran around and kicked the men off the roof and carried them out to sea. I remember dropping them into the ocean and flying back. Hunger pangs hit me and I opened my eyes to see werewolves sitting obediently around me. I blinked twice and Oleg said, "Yes they know. They saw. Come let's eat." I blushed red and they were grinning ear to ear. I awkwardly walked back in doors and thought cautiously, 'Keep an eye on these soldiers like a hawk. Sooner or later one of these idiots will open fire again. Then in the ensuing chaos someone we care about usually gets hurt' the werewolves thought in unison, 'No problem'

It was dinner time and the humans came over asking if they could bring more civilians in. I said yes but obviously have to check their possessions for any contrabands. The woman was ok with it but the person next to her wasn't. I walked out thinking out loud about the second person's expression. So I wanted to check everything to be certain. Something about him just felt wrong ten different ways. It tugged a part of my brain that hasn't been since I was a cop. As I walked towards the front I recalled his twitchy eye, the perspiration on his forehead and how he took a step back as though he was offended. The clenched fist and flared nostrils. The dirty look and a sound that came off his throat was disrespectful. As I reached the steps and a hand grabbed me politely pulled me back. I was asked to stand by the door as per orders of the emperor. I sat on the rails and scan the truck. I had bad feeling so I ordered the truck to turn around so the back was facing me. The driver did as he was told and the woman tried to convince everyone to see reason. The way she was trying to soothe the situation convinced me it was filled with zombies.

The werewolves and vampires immediately raised their weapons as one of the wolves opened the door. Inside were containment units and all sorts of tubes connecting it to some sort of gas cylinder. I recalled the last time I saw one of these Mutts, giant bats and intelligent ones and aggressive ones saw the light of day. She asked if she could set up her lab. Sam told her to turn around and leave. The soldiers who were escorting her pointed their guns at us. I asked permission to punish them and Sam said if they don't leave the next thirty seconds I have his permission to hurt them. I took a deep breath as the wolves started counting. The soldiers said that this was the strongest fortress. They see no reason why having the lab brought is an issue. Cain asked why they had to move to which the response was simple. The containment units failed and these things are loose. The transport carrying fresh specimens ran into trouble. Nadya happily replied, "There's your answer. You are not welcome here because this is a sanctuary designed to protect people from the monsters that are sent out into the world. We are making room so we will bear the brunt of your crimes. Leave or our princess is going to hurt." The soldier laughed, "Go ahead" Sam nod hus head and everyone took a step back. I screamed like a banshee and they immediately fell down and started having seizures. When the one coughed blood Sam asked me to stop so I did.

The soldiers were dragged out and the driver and were dragged out too. She pleaded for her specimens. The truck was taken to a distance and blown to bits. The soldiers were made to forget about this address and the one I side were warned not to mention this place or they will be evicted. Because of their loose lips more and more troublemakers are coming here. This place was supposed to be a place where people don't have to worry about violence. But everyday these people go out and come in like it's their grandma's house. This place is not military property or a military base. This is private property and as such they had better follow the rules or they have twenty four hours to leave the premises. PTSD kicked in as I recalled the day before mom's death. The soldiers were evicted and they didn't leave peacefully. They left explosives here and there that went boom. Thankfully we found all them and threw them away so no zombies were able to barge. Sam mentally ordered the werewolves and vampires to start searching the property for hidden bombs.

The general reminded Sam that this was war. This place was their hope to fight these menaces. Sam made it clear that they are leaving at dawn. The general promised to leave once he found a suitable location but Sam said he can take his soldiers and go. The civilians can stay here as they have been traumatized enough. The general tried to protest but the women who lost loved ones because of his callous behavior told him that they prefer staying here. When the general left everyone searched for bombs. Fifteen were discovered but only seven were activated. I quickly picked each one and ran as far as possible before getting the next one. The only thing in my head on the return trip after the last one was 'I told you so' I slowed down and sat on the swing and recalled telling mom and the warden. Irene and the others backed me up. Obviously being adults they didn't take me seriously till Sonja called out from the walkie talkie that she found a ticking bomb. First there was panic then the search party began.
