Chapter 1 - Chapter One

"You all are incompetent. Bunch of losers," the dark skinned, wavy-haired, handsome young man spoke up.

His eyes lit up with a familiar rage his female employees had gotten used to for over three years.

His male workers resigned every six months because they couldn't let their ego clash with his.

On the other hand, his female workers seemed to love their job regardless of the ill treatment. Or maybe it was his charming looks that made them unable to quit.

He tapped on his desk furiously, his eyes, sending daggers and shivers to his employees who stood opposite him.

The young man was dressed in a grey suit and black turtle neck. His fierce personality was on display, after all, he was the owner of the most biggest and important companies in New York.

"Just one time, one time you needed to perform a job rightly and you screwed it up!" He yelled at the top of his voice, even though it seemed to fluctuate.

"Sir, we're....." One of them tried to speak.

" Shut it! You fools. You are all fired, leave!"

He screeched, as he swivelled round and glared at the half-nude painting of him on the wall.

"Phoebe! Phoebe!" he barked till a tall, slender lady walked in.

" Good day, sir."

"When did you become Phoebe? Have you gone nuts?"

"Phoebe sent in a letter stating that she wouldn't be working here anymore, sir."

" This is the problem I have with you all, you never seem to update me on the happenings around here. Do you think that you own this place? We all know that even in the next twenty years, you can't get to where I am."

" I'm ..."

" Save it! I need a new Personal Assistant, tell Alberta to get someone suitable."

She quickly moved out to inform Alberta of the boss's instructions.

While descending the stairs, an unfamiliar, yet good looking lady caught Alberta's attention.

"Good day, beautiful lady."

"Good day, ma'am."

"I'm sorry, this is unprofessional, but would you like to work here?"

" Yes, I would. In fact, that's why I'm here. I saw the Job vacancy sign outside." The lady replied immediately.

" And what makes you think you can work here?"

"Because I can. Besides, I have the qualifications." she said with so much confidence.

"Alright, you're hired." Alberta said.

" Just like that?" She asked curiously.

" Yes, we do not have time to waste. You're the boss's new Personal Assistant, just be of good character.

"Anything else?"

" I'm sure you know how to be professional, right?"

"Yes, I do. "

" Let me have your CV." She requested as they moved back to her office.

******

"Alberta! Have you found me a Peraonal Assistant?" He asked, looking down at the puzzle which were in his hands.

"Yes, I found someone. She..."

"Speak no further. I need her in my office now. Tell her to get me coffee, the way I like it. "

She ran out hastily like her life depended on her boss's commands.

"It's time, it's time. The boss wants to meet you, make him some coffee too. " She said in a raucous tone.

" How does.... " The confused lady tried to ask, but Alberta had already ran off without looking back.

" What could be wrong with this lady?" She wondered. "Oh well... "

A knock on the door interrupted the boss's call. He was on the phone with his fiancee, the rich girl his dad wanted him to marry.

She was the heiress to her father's wealth.

You see, that's the problem with these rich people. They always want to mingle with people of their class.

"Come in!" He said furiously, fixing his eyes to the door's direction, to see who it was.

A curvy, bowlegged lady walked in, holding a tray with a cup of coffee on it.

He stared at her curvy shape, up to her lips and then fixed his eyes on hers.

"G-Good day, s-sir." She stuttered.

She never thought he'd be this handsome.

"Pictures are deceiving," she always thought. Now she knew better.

She glared at his blue eyes, lovely cheek bones and then his soft pink lips.

"Speak of the devil and another arrives. What are you, a stammerer?

"No, it's just that..."

"I didn't ask you to speak. Who do we have here?"

"Charlotte."

"What a nice name for a stammer." He stated%, laughing hard.

" Here's your coffee, sir. " She uttered, dropping it on his desk.

" I didn't ask you to drop it. I'll let that pass."

He adjusted his expensive suit and picked up the teacup on the tray, he smiled as he took it to his lips. In less than a second, the sound of glass shattering along the floor could be heard.

"It has no sugar. How could you make my coffee as bitter as your life?" Fix this mess immediately!" He growled.

"Useless thing," he added through gritted teeth."

The lady who seemed to be frightened hurriedly cleaned up.

"I need you back in my office once you put that trash away."

Charlotte was a hard one. She had zero tolerance for arrogant people and this one, she had no time to spare him. She felt it was right to be the only female who challenges the 'Almighty billionaire,' so she gathered some courage and moved back to his office.

" Weren't you told that I like my coffee with enough sugar?"

" I wasn't. A change would do sometimes, don't you think?"

" And what's that supposed to mean?" He asked as his resentment thrived.

" You should change too, you're rude. I've heard a lot about you already."

" So I harbour gossips in this company? How dare you talk to me in that manner, do you know who I am? "

" Obviously!

What are you? A god? "

" Alberta! Alberta! " he called out.

" Sir?"

"How did this thing get here?"

"She was qualified for the job and so..."

" Do you know what you are?" He interrupted

" No, sir." She replied

" You are a nincompoop."

The lady faced down in a bid of shame.

" You! You have some guts." He turned to Charlotte.

" How could you be this crazy?" Alberta uttered, now facing Charlotte. "Will you leave or should I make you?"

Charlotte kept shut and stared at her, waiting for her to strike, but she didn't.

" Alberta, leave. I'll handle her!"

He stood to his feet and moved towards Charlotte.

" I won't fire you, no! I want you here so I can keep a close eye on you. You'd run away at the slightest, trust me."

" Is that a challenge?"

" Call it whatever, I'll deal with you mercilessly." He replied, pinning her head to the wall."

" Why does it seem like you're just a weakling who tries to defend himself at the slightest? I mean, no one attacked you."

" Get out!" He screamed with a thunderous voice and a malignant stare.

"How bad could it be? I'm ready for anything."

she said, slamming the door behind her, as she prepared for the worst.

She knew it was going to take months and even years to deal with his attitude, but she was determined to do so.

I mean, he toyed with people's feelings alot, he cared less about anyone but himself. Someone needed to teach him some manners.

"This magot infested thing thinks she can talk to me how she wants. I feel insulted."

" Alberta! Get to my office now!" He dropped the telephone angrily.

In less than two minutes, she arrived and stood there, staring at her boss as he constantly hit his hand on the wall.

Typical Jace McGrath who derived joy from pain.

She seemed to be bothered about him.

"He's probably unstable or something." She thought out loud.

"Huh ?"

"I..I- I'm here, s-sir." She stuttered with fright written all over her.

" It seems you are getting tired of your job, I think I'll have to fire you."

" I'm not tired, sir."

" You keep bringing up excuses each day. What's the topic for today?

Your grandmom got hit by a truck, your mental health is unstable and that's why you hired that thing huh?"

" No."

" You know? Sometimes I wonder if you are mentally demented. How could you bring such a rascal into my company?"

" She was of good behavior when I interviewed her. I'm sorry, it will never happen again."

" Be careful, I won't warn you twice."

******

" Oh my! To why do I owe this wonderful visit from you, my dearest? You didn't tell me you were coming when we spoke on the phone earlier." A monotonous feminine voice spoke from the other end of the room.

Jace was now putting on black pants, a black shirt and dark shades to hide his eyes.

He rolled his eyes in response to her question, whereas she didn't have the slightest idea.

"I do what I want, remember?"

"Of course, my Lord." She replied with a silent chuckle.

"Why? Why are you pretending like everything is fine between us?" He spat.

" What do you mean, sweetheart?"

" This isn't working. Can't you just find someone else who would love and cherish you?"

" I don't care, Jace. It's you I love."

"I don't love you, Isabelle! Why can't you understand?"

"Why do I feel like there's someone else?"

" I owe you no explanation. Either ways, there's no one. I don't want anything intimate with you or anyone."

He felt a flicker of irritation, his blood quickened with rage.

" Why are you treating me this way? Where did I go wrong?"

"I'm fed up! I didn't come here for this! "

He uttered, his tone lacing with venom.

"Tell me, are there skeletons in your cupboard, you perhaps want to show me?"

" You have no right to interfere in my life."

" I don't want us to end up like your mother and father."

" You bitch!" he yelled, raising his hands to her face in an attempt to hit her, yet dropping it cause he couldn't find the guts to do it.

***

"You asked to see me sir." Jace said.

" Yes! My daughter complains that you do not give her the attention she needs. You're unnecessarily rude." Isabelle's dad spat.

Jace on the other hand sat silent, engrossed on his phone.

"Isabelle is my most priceless treasure and I do not want you toy with her feelings." He continued.

" I have important things to do, sir. I'll leave soon."

" You're so disrespectful."

" Respect goes both ways! If you do not respect my choice then I can't respect your words."

" What is your choice? If I may ask."

" You aren't ready for this."

" I only accepted to let Isabelle get married to you because your dad has been my good friends for years and I would like the legacy to continue. Do not bite off more than you can chew!"

"I'd like to see this unfold. I told you already that I do not want your daughter, why are you forcing her on me?"

"Haven't you heard of the people who get married and fall in love later?"

"This is not the movies, it seems you do not have something important to say. Enjoy the rest of your day." He said as he made his way to the door and exits.

There was absolute silence in the room and all you could hear was a sound of shattered mirror and screams of rage. Isabelle had harmed her self.
