Chapter 788 - New Legendary

On the other side, at some point Terrance's face also showed signs of pain. Terrance hadn't expected that, due to the Fairy Mark creating a mental connection between himself and Altaria, he could actually feel some of the pain Altaria was suffering from the Flame of Life's burns. As expected, the Flame of Life was truly overbearing; it could even affect him through another living being!

However, even though he was in pain, Terrance didn't dare be careless and continued to persevere together with Altaria.

At this moment, the entire Cinnabar Gym seemed to fall silent. The raging Flame of Life grew even fiercer, and Altaria kept giving it's all to make it burn stronger. If the Flame of Life could really be controlled, it should, like Roost, be usable for recovery. Both Terrance and Altaria believed that this was the right direction.

A few seconds later, feeling a sudden scorching sensation in his heart, Terrance looked over in shock, only to see that the Flame of Life on Altaria seemed to have accumulated to a critical point, and then, it erupted even more violently!

"Ahhh~~"

Countless flames burst forth, scaring the bystanding challengers, who had already been stunned into repeatedly retreating. But the fully unleashed Flame of Life was so dense that it was useless to dodge; the flames directly struck their bodies.

In a panic, the two quickly threw themselves to the ground, rolling around and shouting for help. But after a moment of rolling, the two suddenly stopped, realizing something was off. The fire wasn't hot.

"It doesn't hurt?"

Terrance, puzzled, reached out his palm. The shared pain he had felt from Altaria was now gone. Could this mean…

He looked toward the arena, which was shrouded in flames. Taking a deep breath, Terrance, aided by Kirlia's Confusion, returned together with several Pokémon to the battlefield above the Cinnabar Gym.

"Altaria!"

Seeing Altaria wrapped in flames but showing no sign of pain, Terrance instantly broke into a smile.

Not only was Altaria no longer being harmed, but the Flame of Life was actually healing Altaria's previous burns.

"It worked…"

By unleashing the maximum possible flame and life energy, and fusing them to create an unending Flame of Life, Terrance forced Altaria into a desperate situation. In that desperation—when the Flame of Life was at its densest—something seemed to fundamentally change within it. At that very instant, Altaria successfully used Roost for controlling life energy to take control of the Flame of Life.

At the moment of crisis, Altaria was reborn from the flames…

Now, by observing the Flame of Life, Terrance was certain that this must be the result of the perfect fusion between life energy and Fire-type energy.

In other words, it was Entei's flame of life. [TN: Author has used different wording for flame of life (生命的火焰) and Flame of Life (生命之火) here. ]

Right now, Altaria was using the flame of life to recover. Compared to Roost, the recovery effect of the Flame of Life was many times faster!

"Heh heh…" Terrance held his forehead and laughed. On his command, Altaria suddenly spewed a mighty pillar of flame toward the magma!

In the next moment, a huge hole was bored through that region of magma. The flame of life continuously eroded the surrounding magma within the hole, and only after a few seconds did the flowing magma close up the cylindrical opening.

"That's enough, this power…"

Terrance's eyes shone. As Altaria's mastery over flames increased, the Flame of Life would only become stronger. Not only that, the Flame of Life had another overpowered ability: healing!!

Using the flame of life to restore the body, and its effect was far stronger than Synthesis, Roost, or Recover. Just this one aspect made the value of the flame of life truly immeasurable!

"Not only can it be used for offense, but also for recovery. Looking at it now... Fairy Aura, Mega Evolution, and Flame of Life; these three foundations have merged into one. Altaria is already like a new legendary. Have I… does this mean I've cultivated a new legendary? Although, Xerneas certainly deserves a lot of the credit…" Terrance scratched his head, unable to hide his joy. He really wanted to find a Champion right away and have a battle, to see the true strength of Altaria, now that it had mastered the Flame of Life!!

However, Terrance also knew he couldn't get ahead of himself. Altaria's control over the Flame of Life was not yet perfect. Although the Flame of Life was of an extremely high level, the foundation that constituted it—Fire-type energy—was still not something Altaria had mastered to the highest degree.

Right now, Altaria's control over Fire-type energy was only obtained through a month of intensive special training inside the volcano!

But Terrance believed that, once Altaria's control over fire advanced even further, he and Altaria would absolutely have the power of a true Champion's ace!

Terrance was certain that, even without using the Flame of Life for attacks, just relying on its overpowered recovery ability would have given him a chance to win in that previous battle against Diantha—

If, that is, Diantha had been fighting at her full strength at the time.

At this moment, Terrance felt completely refreshed. He felt that he'd gotten a step closer to prodigies like Steven and Cynthia. Altaria's battle strength was now fully formed: self-Mega Evolution, Flame of Life, and Fairy Aura—three major systems in one. Terrance was confident that Altaria's strength would only keep increasing over time, reaching heights even he couldn't imagine.

"Haha, what an incredible Flame of Life."

At the same time, Blaine walked out from behind the door. His eyes burned with excitement as he stared at Altaria and Terrance. "I never expected you to be a hidden Fire-type master."

"Fire-type master? I wouldn't dare claim that." Terrance smiled embarrassedly. He really wasn't an expert in Fire-types.

Even the Fairy-type was mostly thanks to the Fairy Domain. As for Terrance's own accumulated experience, it was mainly based on the various techniques he'd studied in his early years; specifically in coordination, which is also related to his background as a Coordinator.

"No, being able to control a flame like this, you already count as a Fire-type master." As a Fire-type master himself, Blaine naturally understood how powerful the Flame of Life was. He was full of admiration; he deeply desired such a rare and powerful flame, and there were many other Trainers like him who felt the same way.

Many Trainers skilled in Fire-types hoped their own Pokémon could master special flames, and paid a great price for it. But even with all their efforts, none of those artificially cultivated flames matched the level of the Flame of Life.

After all, the prerequisite for the Flame of Life is life energy, which most ordinary Pokémon can't control proficiently. A small handful of Pokémon can mobilize life energy to use certain moves, but those are all rigid, fixed-form techniques. Techniques that involve controlling life energy as flexibly as using one's hands and feet, energy fusion, or self-Mega Evolution—these advanced skills have always been exclusive to those Pokémon whose life level is especially high.
