CHAPTER START---

"So, Acnologia?" Gildarts asks the moment the door closes behind Oberon.

He wasn't worried about eavesdropping at all, since the entire second floor and other restricted areas were enchanted to prevent that.

"Yes, you heard correctly," Makarov says. "He's no longer in Fiore. At least we believe that."

"But the kid saw him and lived?"

"More like was so insignificant he went unnoticed."

"It takes a lot for that thing to notice anyone, so what did it notice to land in Fiore?"

"The mountain village the boy grew up in had a deep iron mine. Less than a week ago they uncovered an Earth Dragon Lacrima, somehow."

"Hmm, and that attracted him?"

"It was releasing more Magic Energy than any we've uncovered before, apparently Acnologia didn't like that, and within a day, he descended onto the village. Only Oberon is what remains of it."

"Really? Are you sure the council isn't lying?"

"The boy gave them access to his memories of that day, and I used my authority as Wizard Saint to view them. That's how it happened."

"Alright, so at least we don't have to worry about it hunting the kid, but how did you get involved?"

"His father told him I'm the best Light Magic user in Ishgar, and he's consumed by a fear of Acnologia descending upon him and taking everything he loves away, again."

"So he wants to become strong enough to stop that, quite the task. In fact, that's an impossible task, but that thing only shows up like what, maybe once a decade, if so much..."

"I'm just thankful he doesn't care to commit his life to hunting it. That can only end in death after all."

"Well, that explains why he's here. Now what?" Gildarts asks. "The kid is clearly in love with Magic. How much are you gonna teach him?"

"Everything," Makarov says.

Gildarts gives him a skeptical look, "everything? As in—"

"Everything," Makarov says. "His True Magic is from the New Era of Magic. It's never existed before. And not to speak ill of the dead, but his father was barely a mage. From what he's told me and that I pieced together, the boy is mostly self-taught through the books his family could get.

He surpassed his father long ago. Now he has a proper teacher and access to far more Magic education. Not to mention his control of his Magic Power is arguably the most impressive I've ever seen, aside from possibly Master Precht."

"Really?" Gildarts asks.

"Think about it for a moment. Wizards are almost always oozing out Magic Energy, but when he was here, even when you were focused on him, could you sense any?"

Gildarts thinks about it for a moment. "Huh, you're right. It was as if he didn't have any. But then he started using Magic and I could feel it, and it was a lot."

"Yes, for a regular Wizard the amount of Magic Energy he has would certainly be incredible, and that's considering fully grown adults, but—"

"His Magic costs a lot of Magic Energy, I noticed," Gildarts says. "If he had any other type of Magic he'd be decades ahead of anyone else with it, but Cosmic takes at least three or four times the average Magic Energy cost of other Magics."

"The cost of having such a unique talent, then there is also the fact that most Magics are simply beyond his reach. He could train his entire life and I doubt he'd be able to make one Massive Fireball Spell."

"At least his True Magic is versatile. That should make up for it, right?"

"It will. The boy still has much healing to do in his heart, as anyone would after the experience he's lived through. But his thirst for knowledge and love of Magic is a shining light I haven't seen so brightly in quite a while. I'm sure it will guide him into the future."

"Light Magic," Gildarts mutters. "Extremely common to learn, but with his affinity, he could be a real monster."

"And he has an incredible teacher," Makarov gloats. "His Gravity Magic is also quite a fearsome talent. Difficult to learn or master, certainly hard to find."

"What about Cosmic?" Gildarts asks. "What happens when he mixes them?"

"He said he's not sure yet," Makarov says. "The cost is so great that he hasn't practiced it as much as he'd like. But thus far, he's been able to create much more powerful shields that look like the night sky, according to him at least."

"Hmm, sounds like it just takes his Gravity and Light to the next level, makes sense considering how his Magic is structured," Gildarts rubs his chin. "What do you plan to teach him first? Regulus? A simple beginner spell like that should be easy to start with..."

"That was actually the only spell his father knew, so the boy already knows it well. I'm going to give him my Light Magic journal, and the Radiance Formula."

Gildarts almost chokes on nothing at that. "Seriously?! You're just gonna hand over two of our guild treasures just like that?! Look, Master, I trust and respect you completely, but please remember that he's a kid. We don't know where his path will take him. Handing someone with his potential, that kind of Magic… if he strays it could be bad, very bad."

"I understand, and if he becomes half the Wizard we expect him to be, there wouldn't be many people capable of stopping him. But we believe in him to become a brilliant light for Fairy Tail, and maybe even for the world."

"We?" Gildarts asks, then he recalls the strange glow Oberon's guild mark did when he received it, something he'd never seen before. "Wait, when the guild mark glowed, was that her?"

"Mhm," Makarov waves his hand over the table, and on it, a Magic Circle appears.

Golden with one layer of runes, and the Fairy Tail emblem in the middle.

It rises and three white and gold grimoires appear on the table in a bright flash.

The first had the Fairy Tail emblem on the cover, but it had a strange detailed arrowhead-like shape around it, and the tail of the emblem was also much longer.

The second also had the Fairy Tail emblem on the cover, but with wings on either side of it.

And the final one had the Fair Tail emblem wrapped in another detailed design, almost forming a full circle.

And all the books glowed for a moment before becoming dull.

"I see," Gildarts looks at the books with apprehension. "Well, if she trusts him, that's good enough for me."

"Yes, I too was skeptical when I first met him. But when we were speaking, the guild mark on my chest radiated a certain warmth. Then when he spoke of what he'd like me to teach him, her book did the same in my Spatial Storage."

Gildarts leans back and looks at the book. "She barely knows the kid, but already wants you to eventually teach him Fairy Tail's three sacred, ultra-level spells. This can't be real."

"You sound almost jealous," Makarov teases. "Maybe it's because he's a child with incredible Magic Energy control and Light Magic talent, while you're a clumsy Wizard who destroys things just by walking around."

"Look, I'm just saying, would have been nice if at least one of these glowed for me," Gildarts shrugs. "But it was for the best, anyway. Learning complicated Magic like that was never my thing. All I need are my fists!"

Makarov sighs, "Quit your whining. You're our only S-Class Wizard. Hell, in the past 13 years since you became S-Class she hasn't allowed anyone else to pass the trial. You're clearly on her good side."

"I know, I know," Gildarts then realizes something, and gives a devious grin. "Hey, if— I mean, when this kid becomes S-Class, then I won't have to do all the tough jobs we get requested for, right?"

"That will be at least a few years. He's only 8 right now."

"If he's half as talented as you and she thinks, won't be more than 5 years," Gildarts shrugs. "Gives my old bones a much-needed break."

Makarov waves his hands and the three books disappear in a golden flash.

"Finally having a second S-Class would be nice," he says. "I've always taken pride in disregarding the world's opinion of my guild and its children, but I understand this isn't possible for everyone.

You don't like the spotlight, and apparently, Oberon is much the same way. But us having a second S-Class means more clients will send us better jobs, and we'll be recognized more."

"Which will boost morale around here, yeah," Gildarts says. "We Fairy Tail Wizards don't really care about what people think of us. Hell, we don't ever care about what the council thinks of us, but that doesn't mean we don't want to hear people cheering for us, right?"

"Mhm," Makarov deflates into his seat and picks up the open grimoire displaying Oberon's talents. "I don't know if I should be excited, or worried, that the new era is unfolding right before my eyes."

"Hopeful, always be hopeful. Laxus is a good kid. Oberon seems nice enough, naïve, but well intentioned. Between the two of them, Fairy Tail will be in good hands."

"I hope so, because I'm already 63, if I have to keep shielding these brats from the council my heart will explode."

Gildarts chuckles at that. "Just promise me you'll last until one of them is ready to take over. Being a Guild Master is like my worst nightmare."

Makarov can't help but laugh. "Times aren't so desperate I'd leave them in your hands yet."

"Hey!"

Makarov only laughs harder, then stops as he reads something sad in Oberon's talents. "Damn it."

"What's wrong?"

"On the train ride here, he talks about how he'd love to have teleportation magic...but from the looks of this, that won't really be a viable option for him."

"Damn, that's a useful one too," Gildarts says. "What's your plan for his other Magics? He sees like he wants to learn a lot, decided what you'll teach him first?"

"Well, Magic's that normally don't consume much Magic Energy or focus are better."

"So utility Magic, makes sense. His Cosmic should be more than enough combat power on its own."

"And from the looks of his Magic Affinities, that seems to be the only actual option...poor boy can't even efficiently use Fire Magic."

"Yeah, but he has Cosmic, seems like a more than fair trade."

"Yes well, the 1st Master certainly thinks so..."
