The rest day did not last long. It never really did, with this family.
By the second morning, they were all sitting in a loose circle on the big platform under the largest umbrella tree, eleven sealed scrolls laid out on the wood in front of them, and the itch to get moving again was plain on every face.
"Okay," Rin said, cracking her knuckles. "Who is opening theirs first? I vote me. I have been holding this thing for two days, and it is killing me."
"You held it for two days because you cannot sit still," Lilith said, not looking up from her own scroll. "That is not the same as patience."
"Patience is overrated. Open your scroll, second sister."
"Do not call me that while ordering me around."
"Fine. Open your scroll, your majesty."
Lilith's mouth twitched. "Better."
