Chapter 34 - To set sail

Shun and Toma were running through the village at full speed in the direction of the harbor, where their new ship was located.

Shun was getting farther and farther away from Toma, leaving him behind. Toma's speed was slowed down because of all the things he was carrying, the steel sword, the shinai, and the bag with some things he grabbed from home before running away.

On the other hand, Shun thanks to his devil fruit ability, all the things he got in the village for free followed him in the air floating.

Seeing that Toma was falling further and further behind, Shun controlled more air currents to make Toma's sword and other stuff float, "Thank you!" said Toma as his speed increased.

Toma's speed was pretty good for a 12-year-old, still, he couldn't keep up with Shun who was only using his physical strength to run, he didn't use air powers to increase his speed or the air skateboard.

The villagers were surprised to see Toma and Shun running at full speed. But what surprised them most was that behind them were a large number of floating objects.

After a few minutes, they could see the harbor in the distance, and the only boats that were there were Gally's and Oyag's.

When they were a few meters away, Shun took a big jump and landed successfully on the ship, he threw the things on the floor of the ship without much consideration.

"Hurry up!" shouted Shun to Toma who was climbing the stairs of the ship.

Shun didn't want to run into Silk, Isao, and the others while escaping with Toma, as it would be an awkward situation.

"I'm Coming!" shouted Toma as he climbed onto the ship a little agitated.

"Unfurl the sails, don't we have time to change them for the new ones. I'll raise the anchor" ordered Shun as he headed for the iron anchor which was 2 meters long.

With his strength he quickly finished raising the anchor, when he looked at Toma he noticed that he had almost finished unfurling the two sails that the ship had.

The forward sail was the one with the giant Gally pirate flag on it, so they would have to change it later if they didn't want to be mistaken for pirates.

"Ready. Or so I think..." said Toma looking at both sails.

Shun quickly went to the helm to maneuver the ship so as not to collide with Oyag's very close ship, since the harbor was not very big.

He didn't have time to use the map and navigation compass, plus he still didn't know how to use it very well. The seconds passed and the ship moved a few centimeters.

Shun looked up and looked at the sails, he noticed instantly that they were not catching the wind optimally, and for that reason, the ship was not moving. Toma also noticed it and quickly went to try to solve it.

But at that moment they heard an angry shout, "You brat! How dare you leave without my permission!" It was Isao's voice that was still hoarse because he woke up just now.

"Shit!" said Toma nervously as he tried to change something on the sails to catch the wind, but because of his nerves he couldn't manage it.

'We don't have time' thought Shun as he controlled the air currents towards the sails. The air currents directed at the sails caused the ship to propel at a great speed.

"That's it!" exclaimed Toma happily as he noticed the ship moving.

Because of the sudden speed Shun quickly maneuvered the rudder, and narrowly missed colliding with Oyag's boat, "Phew... that was close."

At the port Isao had already arrived followed by Kenzo and behind him was Silk. Chihiro, Hana, and the other guys that Shun saved from Oyag's ship had also arrived.

"Damn brat get back here!" shouted Isao angrily standing on the edge of the dock trying to touch the ship, but it was too late.

"Isao watch out!" said Chihiro as she grabbed the old man by his shirt so he wouldn't fall into the sea. Isao couldn't hear and kept shouting things to Toma to come back.

Toma wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked towards the port where Isao and the others were. Noticing that he attracted Toma's attention, Isao started yelling louder.

"Sorry Isao and everyone! I'll try to send you letters!" shouted Toma in a happy tone as he imagined himself writing letters of all his adventures.

Shun who was at the helm turned and looked out into the harbor. Isao's face looked like it was about to explode with anger, Kenzo also had an angry look on his face. When his gaze fell on Silk, she returned his gaze and greeted him with a smile. Shun greeted her with a slight smile and looked straight ahead again.

"Damn brat dares to ignore me" said Isao indignantly as he realized that Toma stopped looking at him.

"I knew from the start that boy was a bad influence on Toma" said Isao referring to Shun.

"Don't blame Shun. Toma always had an adventurous spirit, although I'm sad to see him go, if he's with Shun he'll be safe" Silk said with annoyance hearing Isao criticize Shun.

"Hmph don't be fooled by his pretty face, Silk. Besides, Toma went to your house to get Shun and he was carrying a bag of his stuff, why didn't you warn me?" asked Isao questioning her.

"I had just woken up and didn't notice" Silk replied, looking away.

"We should have followed Shun too" said Hana in a sad tone, for missing a golden opportunity.

"Yes..." said Chihiro, Ralph, and the other young men as they watched the ship getting farther and farther away.

All young people always have a desire to go on adventures and explore the world. And following Shun was the best opportunity since they would have someone strong, in case they met pirates like Gally. Although Shun would not allow them to follow him, he already made an exception for Toma.

The only one who didn't have that thought was Silk. This was because she loved life in the village and taking over her bar was enough for her.

"Stop those silly looks, let's go" Kenzo said as he walked back to town with the others. Isao stayed a while longer at the harbor watching the horizon.

...

"We are far enough away. Let's change sail" said Shun as he left the helm.

"Yes!" said Toma enthusiastically. Adrenaline was coursing through his body, he finally escaped the village and would have many adventures.

Changing the main sail was harder than they imagined, it took them 10 minutes to get it out of place, but the hardest part was setting the sail that old Krikens gave them. When they took it out they compared it with the other two white sails they had and realized that it was 25 meters long, so they used the first sail that Krikens gave them.

To put it in all the holes and have it set properly took 15 minutes, "It's done" said Shun.

'I feel like I'm forgetting something...' thought Shun as he looked at the new sail.

"What's wrong?" asked Toma noticing Shun's puzzled look.

"PO!" exclaimed Shun remembering his duck friend who got separated from him last night.

Toma's face upon hearing the duck's name transformed, "Did he stay in the village?" he asked in shock, if they went back to look for him it would be the end for him as Isao would catch him.

Before Shun could answer, they heard strange footsteps behind them. As they turned around they noticed the 6,5 foot duck emerging with a sleepy face from one of the ship's rooms.

"So there you were" said Shun relieved that he didn't leave his animal friend stranded.

Po the night before did not sleep in the cold forest, but went to the ship and slept in one of the most comfortable and warm beds. Toma also sighed in relief as they would not have to return to the village.

"Cuack..." said Po in a not-so-cheerful tone, his head still hurt from drinking so much alcohol. Then he started to be signs that Shun managed to understand, "He's hungry" said Shun with a frown, the first thing this lazy duck would do was ask for food.

"I didn't have any breakfast too, as I didn't want to wake Isao up" said Toma.

Shun remembered that he didn't eat breakfast either, as the sight of the ghosts scared him a little and he ran away from Silk's house, he wondered how Silk would cook.

"That's the bag with the food, prepare something. I will handle the ship to get to the 16th division, we have 5 days to travel" said Shun.

Toma nodded and went with the bag to the galley, Po followed him with a hungry face.

Arriving at the helm Shun took out the map and navigational compass. Now the ship's sails were catching the wind ideally, so they were making good progress.

Unlike the normal compass, the navigational compass was larger, mounted on a wooden stand and Shun could tell it had more stuff inside that he didn't know what it worked for.

Shun rested the navigational compass on an edge near the rudder, and unrolled the map, "Let's see..." said Shun analyzing the map.

30 minutes flew by and Toma called out to him, "Shun, the food is ready!"

Hearing Toma's shout, he put aside all the navigational items and headed to the kitchen with a defeated look on his face.

"What happened?" asked Toma noticing the strange look on Shun's face.

Shun as he sat down at the kitchen table replied, "Nothing..."

In the 30 minutes he spent he could not figure out in which direction to steer the ship to go to the 16th Marine Division. First of all, the Organ Islands were an archipelago, that is, a group of islands close to each other. And the map did not specify where they had sailed from, so I did not know their specific location.

Secondly, the island where the marine base was located was between the south and the east, so I had little idea in which direction I should go. On the navigational compass, there were many numbers, letters, and lines that Shun did not understand.

All he knew was to use a normal compass and head north, but what did N.E, N.W, S.E and S.W mean?

'Looks like I'll have to read the books... but my reading sucks' Shun thought with a frown as he ate.

Shun's reading skills were very basic and he hadn't practiced them in years. The only times he could practice reading, was when his little brother Jiro would bring homework from school and Shun would study it.

And this wasn't much, since his brother only went to school 3 days, so there wasn't a great level of study.

Studying books with hundreds of pages of navigation doesn't seem like an easy task, I'd rather face 100 Gallys at the same time.

'I'll try to take a look at the books, if not I'll ask Toma, I hope he can read' thought Shun finishing eating and going back to the helm with the compass and the map.

Now he could understand much better what the little man in the map store was telling him. Navigation is not a game.
