We tiptoed out of the room, closing the door softly behind us. The kitchen awaited, a battlefield of flour, banana peels, and cookie crumbs, but I didn't mind. Those messes were proof of the memories we'd made—Matías's proud "hero smash," Nina's delighted gumming of her first cookie, and the laughter that had filled every corner of our home.
Once in the kitchen, Jiro started stacking dishes while I grabbed the remaining chocolate chip cookies, popping one into my mouth. The warm, melty chocolate was a small reward for surviving our superhero baking mission. "Want one?" I asked, holding out a cookie to Jiro.
She bite into the chocolate cookie and smiled. "It's delicious!"
I nodded. "The banana ones aren't too bad."
"Hey, don't eat too many of those. They're Nina's."
I nodded. "Relax. This is the only banana oat one I'll be eating."
She chuckled. "I hope so, else I'll give you a super punch to the gut."
