[Some days later]

I sighed as I saw my husband in his study. There were various metal devices of various shapes and sizes scattered across the floor. There were also scribbles on the walls and piles of books that were teetering like towers.

"You are going to drive yourself mad," I said, standing by the door to avoid stepping on anything. The air was thick with the scent of old paper, metal, and something I couldn't quite place—something electric, like the air after a lightning strike.

Raikū looked up from a blueprint and sighed. "Ah, Amaya. Just trying to figure out a way to better analyze the connection between our world and the Abyss."

I frowned. "Sounds dangerous. You might end up making it a self-fulfilling prophecy by drawing those 'lampreys' to our world."

He snickered. "I won't be creating a portal. I just want to study our world's boundary, find potential gaps. That way we can shore up our defenses before those 'things' find a way in."
