Meili stood alongside her teammates, her eyes fixed on Sifu Ryker as he demonstrated a complex technique. She nodded along, determined to master it, but as she attempted to replicate the move, she felt a surge of self-doubt.
Her movements were clumsy, and she stumbled, her confidence wavering. Fuse, who was training nearby, noticed Meili's struggles and offered words of encouragement, but Meili couldn't shake off the feeling of inadequacy.
Kai, who was observing from a distance, noticed Meili's decline in performance. He frowned slightly, wondering what was wrong. But he chose not to intervene.
As the training continued, Meili's frustration grew. She felt like she was holding back her teammates, and her lack of confidence was affecting her performance. She gritted her teeth, determined to push through, but it seemed like the more she tried, the worse she became.
Sifu Ryker approached Meili, his expression concerned. "Meili, what's going on? You look troubled by something of sort," he said, his voice gentle.
Meili hesitated, unsure of how to respond. She didn't want to admit her weaknesses, but she knew she needed help. "I...I'm just having a bit of trouble focusing, Sifu," she replied, trying to brush it off.
Sifu Ryker nodded thoughtfully. "Let's take a break, and I'll work with you one-on-one. We'll get you back on track."
Meili nodded, feeling a sense of relief. Maybe with Sifu Ryker's help, she could overcome her doubts and regain her confidence.
Kai, meanwhile, continued his own training, his movements precise and flawless. He didn't even glance in Meili's direction, his focus solely on perfecting his technique.
Sifu Ryker stood facing Meili, his eyes locked on hers. "Alright, Meili, let's see what you're working with. I want you to attack me with everything you've got," he said, his voice firm and commanding. Meili nodded, her eyes flashing with determination. She charged at Sifu Ryker, her fists flying in a flurry of punches and kicks. THWACK! Sifu Ryker dodged and parried her strikes with ease.
THUD! The sound of her attacks echoed through the training ground as Sifu Ryker countered her moves.
As they sparred, Sifu Ryker noticed Meili's lack of focus and precision. Her attacks were wild and uncontrolled, lacking the finesse and skill that he knew she possessed. "Meili, what's going on?" Sifu Ryker asked, his voice calm and even. "You're not hitting hard as you once did the last time we met. You're holding back for some reason, and it's making you sloppy."
Meili gritted her teeth, her frustration growing. She knew she wasn't performing at her best, but she couldn't seem to shake off the doubts that were plaguing her. Sifu Ryker sensed Meili's turmoil and decided to push her further. "Let's try something different," he said, his voice taking on a more challenging tone. "Grab a sword (wooden), I want you to go all out, no holds barred. Show me what you're truly capable of." "Alright then, here I come. Lightening Sword style.." She said.
Meili's eyes flashed with determination, and she launched herself at Sifu Ryker with renewed ferocity.
KA-BOOM!
Sifu Ryker countered Meili's attacks with ease again, but he was impressed by her intensity and determination. Sifu Ryker dodged a swift kick and countered with a swift strike that Meili barely blocked, CRACK!
As they fought, Sifu Ryker began to notice a pattern in Meili's movements. He saw flashes of her old self, the confident and skilled warrior she once was. But he also saw the doubt and uncertainty that was holding her back. Sifu Ryker's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with strategies to help Meili overcome her doubts and unlock her true potential. He knew that Meili would be a valuable member of the team, and he was determined to help her reach her full potential.
"Pathetic," Ryker said suddenly, his voice cutting deeper than any strike. "You're not even close to being good enough, Meili," he said, his words cutting deeper.
He blurred forward, SLAP! a sharp strike to her cheek sent her stumbling back. Gasps rippled across the training grounds.
Meili froze, her hand on her stinging face. Shock and shame churned inside her. "Why would he—?" she thought to herself. "Why is he being so cruel all of a sudden?"
"Is this the strength you'll bring against Xaphan?" Ryker thundered, his tone unrelenting. "You think the enemy will wait while you coddle your ghosts? That hesitation will kill you—and worse, it'll kill your comrades."
Meili's eyes flashed with anger, but she bit back her retort. "I'm trying...I'm trying my best," she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.
"No," Ryker snapped, his eyes narrowing. "You're giving everything you allow yourself. There's more buried inside you, but you chain it with fear. I want you to tear it out. Here. Now."
"Tear what out?" Meili repeated out loud, her voice laced with desperation. "How can I let go when I don't even know what's holding me back?" Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes as she looked up at Sifu Ryker.
In her thoughts, Meili wondered if Sifu Ryker was trying to break her or build her up. "Is he trying to make me stronger or destroy me?" she thought, her mind racing with doubts.
Ryker stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. His voice lowered, steel wrapped in calm. "You've carried something since before you came here. Pain… loss. You've hidden it well, but in battle, nothing stays hidden. It'll spill, and it'll drown you unless you learn to face it."
As Sifu Ryker and Meili's intense training session continued, other members of the team began to take notice. Fuse, who was training nearby, caught a glimpse of the exchange between Sifu Ryker and Meili. She raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the sudden shift in Sifu Ryker's demeanor.
Fuse's eyes flicked back to her own training, but she couldn't help sneaking glances at Meili and Sifu Ryker. She noticed that Meili looked visibly shaken, her eyes welling up with tears. Fuse's expression softened slightly, and she felt a pang of concern for her teammate.
Kai, on the other hand, seemed completely unfazed by the commotion. He continued to train with precision and focus, his movements fluid and controlled. If he noticed the tension between Sifu Ryker and Meili, he didn't show it.
The atmosphere around the training grounds grew slightly tense, with some team members exchanging curious glances. They knew that Sifu Ryker was a demanding instructor, but they had never seen him push someone so hard, especially not Meili.
The team's reactions ranged from concern to curiosity, with some wondering what was going on between Sifu Ryker and Meili.
Meili became furious and attempted a strike in the Phoenix sword style, but the move faltered and was evaded with ease. Sifu Ryker's expression turned disgusted, and he struck her hard.
"War is a contradiction," Sifu Ryker said, his voice carrying over the clash of training. "They tell you it forges heroes, but all it truly does is make graves. Kings call it glory. Generals call it necessity. But for the young, for you, it's little more than theft. It steals years, innocence, and futures."
As he spoke, Sifu Ryker moved with measured grace, parrying Meili's strikes with nothing but his bare hands. Every motion was deliberate, every step a lesson in restraint rather than dominance.
"Make no mistake, you were all drafted into this path not for your sake, but for theirs," Sifu Ryker continued. "A ruler sees young warriors as clay—malleable, fierce, unbroken by fear. That is why they want you in the field. Because the young don't question orders… until it's too late."
Sifu Ryker caught her wooden blade in his palm and twisted it aside, refusing to strike back. "I stand against that," he said, his gaze steady and unflinching. "Not because you lack strength, but because strength should not be harvested like crops. War makes children into soldiers, and soldiers into corpses. If you must fight, then fight for yourselves, not for the illusions of those who will never bleed beside you."
A ripple of silence followed, and then Sifu Ryker's final words struck, low and bitter, "Your friend, who looked up to you, Meili… what did she see? Did she see a warrior? Or did she see the fate she might have shared, if she'd been born with a blade in her hand instead of a dream in her heart?"
The team's reactions were mixed, with some looking at each other uncertainly. Meili's face was a picture of turmoil, her emotions raw and exposed.
"And for a moment she stepped into your world, Meili—without training, without a blade, without the strength you pride yourself on. And what became of her? She died bearing the weight that should have been yours to carry."
"You should no longer feel like a novice to this kind of life," Sifu Ryker said, his voice cutting deep into Meili's psyche. "You've seen a loved one die right in front of you, and there's no doubt there'd be so many more to come. But my question to you is, what the hell are you going to do about it?"
Unbeknownst to Sifu Ryker, his words had already struck a chord within Meili, triggering a torrent of emotions that threatened to consume her. Wraithbane's voice echoed in her mind, its malevolent presence feeding off her anger and grief. "Yes, you runt. Do something about it!" it snarled, its voice like a rusty gate scraping against Meili's sanity.
Meili's eyes flashed with a mix of fury and desperation, her gaze darkening as Wraithbane's influence grew stronger. Sifu Ryker's words had unwittingly unleashed a maelstrom of emotions within her, and now Wraithbane was egging her on, urging her to surrender to her baser instincts.
The air around Meili seemed to vibrate with tension, as if the very fabric of reality was bending to accommodate the darkness spreading within her. Sifu Ryker's eyes narrowed, sensing the change in Meili's demeanor, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what was happening.
"What the hell? No," Meili growled, her teeth clenched in determination. "You think you can show up anytime and take over. I won't let you control me, you bastard."
Wraithbane's laughter echoed through her mind, a cold, mirthless sound. "You think you can stop me, runt?" it sneered. "I've been inside you for far too long now. I know your deepest fears, your darkest desires. I'll always be one step ahead of you."
Meili's anger flared, fueled by the memory of the times Wraithbane had taken over her body and mind. She remembered the feeling of being trapped, unable to control her own actions. She remembered the shame and guilt that followed.
"I won't let you do it again," Meili repeated, her voice firm. "I'll fight you every step of the way."
Wraithbane's response was a surge of contempt. "You think you can fight me? I'm the one who's been keeping you alive all this time. I'm the one who'll give you the power to survive in this battle."
Meili's eyes flashed with anger. "Power?" she spat. "You call this power? Being a puppet on strings, dancing to your tune? No, I won't be your plaything anymore."
Sifu Ryker's eyes narrowed as he watched Meili's struggle unfold. He could see the strain etched on her face, the sweat dripping down her brow. "Was I wrong to drive her to this point?" Sifu Ryker thought to himself. "Am I pushing her too fast, too hard? Is this some kind of breakdown? He replayed the training session in his mind, questioning every decision he'd made.
Sifu Ryker's instincts told him to intervene, to stop the training session and give Meili a chance to recover. But his experience as a trainer told him that sometimes, the only way to truly break through was to push past the limits. "Should I continue?" Sifu Ryker wondered.
As Meili's body began to convulse, Sifu Ryker's uncertainty turned to concern. He took a step forward, his hand reaching out to intervene.
"Meili, snap out of it!" Sifu Ryker called out, his voice firm but controlled.
But Meili didn't respond, her body continuing to tremble and shake. Sifu Ryker's expression turned grim, his mind racing with possibilities.
Suddenly Meili's body stiffened, her head snapping up from its downward gaze. She rose into a fighting stance, her movements fluid and controlled. "Sifu, I think I'm ready now," she said, her voice low and even. "I remember now, Sifu. I remember what I need to do."
Sifu Ryker's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing as he studied Meili's stance. Something was different, he could sense it.
"Very well," Sifu Ryker said slowly. "Let's see what you're truly capable of."
