Chapter 88 - XWC: MEILI VS VEYRUUN

Inside Veyruun's head, Vorgath was thinking.

"What caused this? Was it that girl?"

He scanned Meili from above. No crushing pressure. No menacing energy. Nothing that should make him wary.

"Then how—"

His gaze dropped. To Hibiki, lying at Meili's feet.

"My core was detached. But he's still alive. Somehow."

A bitter laugh ran through him, meant only for the soul he carried.

"We came all this way, Xaphan. And look at us now. I don't have much time left, do I? And your ambition… it might have hit its breaking point."

"The son of Wu Long lives. He didn't even show his face. But still."

Vorgath's aura steadied.

"Raise your head, Xaphan. You have my utmost respect. My honor."

His eyes narrowed on the battlefield below.

"I'll do the deed. I'll annihilate every one of your enemies. Right here. Right now."

On the ground, Meili took in the battlefield.

Destruction everywhere. And her comrades staring at her like she'd fallen from the sky. Veyruun's giant form was already descending, closing the distance.

"Meili!! Kai!!"

Kaede's voice cut through the noise. She was in her beast form, one clawed hand keeping Lyra pinned, Ryker slung over her shoulder.

"How? What happened?"

Meili glanced up at her sifu. Blood on her sleeves. But her eyes were steady.

"Sorry we're late, sifu. No time to explain. This war ends now."

Kaede blinked. That confidence. That tone. It threw her. Then she saw Hibiki.

Her breath caught. Relief hit her so hard her knees almost gave. She swallowed it down.

"Someone get Hibiki! Now!"

As if on cue, Sifu Akane appeared with her medical squad, moving fast.

"What the— where have you been all day?" Kaede snapped.

"You don't have to worry about that now, Kaede," Akane said, already kneeling beside Hibiki. "The important thing is we're here."

Gasps went through the younger warriors. Fuse stopped mid-step, eyes locked at her unconscious master.

The Grandmasters were in no shape to fight Veyruun again. Zabuza watched from the ridge. Ansen and his squad hung back, watching Meili. Elia sat with Akane's team, one eye being patched, the other never leaving Meili.

Above them, the air grew heavy.

Vorgath was coming down. Closer. Closer.

With every meter, a ferocious aura poured off him. It pressed against the ground, made the dust swirl, made armor creak.

Meili felt it hit her. It knocked the air from her lungs for half a second.

She didn't step back.

Kai planted his good foot and stood beside her.

Vorgath's shadow fell over them both.

Meili dragged in a deep breath.

She reached for Wraithbane. Pulled. Tried to surge the energy up through her arms.

It bucked. Twisted. Pushed back against her like it wanted the wheel.

"Damn it," she hissed through her teeth. "Stubborn bastard."

She forced it down. Held the line. Kept control even with Veyruun standing right above them.

"What is it?" Kai asked, watching her face.

"It's not working," Meili said. "It has to be Wraithbane. He's fighting me again."

She looked at Kai. "Sanguine. Is there anything else I can do?"

Inside Kai's chest, Sanguine stirred. His voice came through low, only for the two of them.

"We'll have to bear it," she said. "I don't understand Wraithbane. We've never dealt with one like this. But he can be a real pain in the ass."

Kai exhaled hard. "Are you serious, both of you?"

He scrubbed a hand over his face. "Forget it. Means I go in with you, Meili."

"No."

Meili cut him off immediately. Her voice cracked. "No, I don't want you getting hurt for me again. Please."

Kai stared at her. Then he reached out and set his palm on top of her head.

She flinched, surprised.

"You can be such a drag, you know that?" he said. No smile. Just tired, and steady.

He dropped his hand.

"Come on," he said. "Let's get this shit over with."

Ryou watched them from a few feet away.

His eyes flicked between Meili and Kai, but he couldn't make sense of what they were saying. Wraithbane. Sanguine. It all sounded like code he wasn't meant to hear.

His bigger problem was Vorgath. The air was getting heavier by the second. The ground trembled with each step the giant took.

Behind Ryou, Lei was with Akane's healers. She was thrashing, muttering, caught in whatever was eating her from the inside. Akane had one hand on her chest, trying to keep her still.

In front of him, Kai stepped forward.

His face was bruised. There were holes through his sleeves where the skin underneath was torn. But his sword was up. Steady. And his eyes weren't shaking.

Meili followed. She wiped the nervousness off her face like dust and drew her sword.

"I'm sorry, Kai," she said quietly, falling in beside him.

"For what?" he asked, not looking at her.

"Everything."

Kai didn't answer right away. Vorgath's shadow fell over them, blocking out the red sky.

Veyruun came down slow.

He wasn't in a hurry. Something told him Meili and Kai were holding back. That they still had a card to play.

From the ridge, Zabuza caught it too.

"Everyone back!" he barked. "Now! Clear out from Meili and Kai!"

Warriors moved. The wounded pulled themselves across the dirt to get distance. No one asked why.

Grandmaster Yagushi stood with Fei and Jiang. Bruised. Armor cracked. Breathing hard. But they stepped forward anyway.

Veyruun didn't wait.

"You."

His voice split the air.

"Die. Maximum Residual Pulse!"

He drew in air. Compressed it in his chest until it felt like a mountain in his ribs. Then he let go.

Within a 200 meter radius of Meili and Kai, the ground ruptured.

No fire. No blast. Just vibration. A delayed quake that had been buried beneath them, waiting.

The earth bucked. Stone split. Rings of shockwave tore trenches across the field, ripping everything apart. Everything except the small circle under Meili and Kai's feet.

The rest of the battlefield lost balance. Warriors hit the ground. Boulders toppled. Dust rose and choked the sky.

This was Cataclysm Pulse. The restrained echo of Veyruun's true form. Chi forced to critical density, then discharged. What once shook the world by simply existing was now aimed, controlled, and weaponized.

And Residual Pulse did exactly what it was made for. It left unstable vibrations in the ground to break footing, to break focus.

The Grandmasters moved.

Yagushi slammed both palms to the earth to anchor it. Fei dropped beside him. Jiang dove, shielding a group of young warriors from a slab of falling debris.

When it stopped, the field looked like it had been chewed up and spit out. Craters. Fissures. Nothing but silence.

In the middle of it, that 200 meter circle was clean. Untouched.

"Oh no," Meili breathed. She took a step forward.

Kai caught her arm.

"Hey," he said. "The Grandmasters have it. Look who's in front of us."

Meili turned back. Dust swirled around them, but not a single crack ran beneath their boots.

Above them, Veyruun tilted his head.

"Interesting."

"From this close, you reek of Wraith manifestation, boy."

Veyruun's voice rolled over them. He was looking straight down at Kai.

Kai didn't answer. His hand went to his sword. Bruised, bleeding, but his stance didn't shake.

Meili mirrored him. Blade half-drawn. Up close, Veyruun was even worse. Even though he was dwelling within Xaphan, The pressure. It made both of them hesitate for half a breath.

"Before I end both your lives," Veyruun said, "do you happen to have a Wraith dwelling inside you?"

Silence.

Kai just watched him. Waiting for the first move.

Veyruun exhaled.

"Seems the longer I take, the less time I have to keep my promise."

WHOOSH-CRACK!!

He moved.

One second he was in the air. The next he was in front of Kai.

A single, ferocious strike.

BAM!!

Kai was gone. Sent flying through the dirt, crashing through craters, skidding until the dust swallowed him.

"Lightning Style!"

Zzzzt-taptap!!

Meili was already charging.

Her signature. Explosive speed. Precision. Rapid footwork that blurred, quick-draw slashes that came out before you could see them.

CLASH! THUD!! FWOOSH!!!

She hit Veyruun with everything. A flurry of strikes aimed at joints, throat, ribs. Each one meant to land before he could react.

But it wasn't enough.

Veyruun turned with her. Swatted. Countered. His sheer size and power ate through her speed.

She had to rely on that speed just to survive. Blink in. Strike. Blink out. Deflect. Dodge. Never stay in one place long enough for him to pin her.

Sparks trailed her feet. Her breathing was sharp.

And Veyruun was barely winded.

Zzzzt—shing!

Meili darted in again.

CLANG!

Veyruun blocked it with the back of his hand like she was swatting air.

She spun out. Breathing hard.

'I... I can't even get close to him.'

Her thoughts raced while her feet kept moving.

'No openings. Not even for a far strike. Every angle's sealed.

What else am I supposed to do?'

Veyruun exhaled, and Xaphan's body shuddered. Cracks ran deeper across his skin. He was running out of time in this vessel and it showed.

"Did I overestimate you two?" he said, voice flat with annoyance.

"Is this the best you both can do? I know you destroyed my body. But I don't feel it. No hint of strong ki from either of you."

His eyes narrowed.

"Is this some stupid human game?"

'Damnit, Wraithbane.'

Meili gritted her teeth, circling.

'He just shut it all down. His presence, his power. I can't sense anything anymore. He's a void.'

The moment she thought it, Veyruun moved.

'SNAP!'

He caught her wrist mid-strike.

"AHH!!"

Meili screamed. Pain shot up her arm. Something cracked.

SHRINK!

A shadow dropped from above.

Kai.

He came straight down from his suspension post, sword aimed at Veyruun's skull.

Veyruun sidestepped. SWOOSH.

Kai spun and threw a kick.

Veyruun caught it with his other arm. THUD!

"Never in all my time of existence," Veyruun growled, Xaphan's face twisting with disgust, "would I have thought I'd be dragged to this. A tool to a human. Partaking in his games..."

He tossed Kai aside and turned back to Meili, still holding her cracked wrist.

"Wu Long, you might have won the first round."

His voice dropped.

"But this time I'll take my revenge on your people. These people will suffer the wrath I had in store for you."

The ground under his feet splintered.

And Meili could only think one thing,

'We're not even scratching him.'

BOOM!

Veyruun hurled them.

Kai and Meili tumbled into the distance, crashing through dirt and stone until they vanished into craters.

Skraaaak—thud!!

Silence for half a second.

Then the air went heavy.

WHOOSH!!

Veyruun's body rose.

Hundreds of feet. Then thousands. Until Xaphan's cracked frame was a speck against the sky.

The heavens darkened.

Clouds curled inward. The wind died. Even the dust on the battlefield stopped moving.

Above his head, light began to bleed.

A crimson sphere. Small at first. Then growing.

Vvvvmmmm...

It pulsed. And with every pulse it pulled.

Clouds spiraled into it. Wind screamed. Rocks tore from the ground and were dragged up. Fragments of spent chi from the battlefield, every stray bit of energy, got ripped from the air and fed into it.

Meili dragged herself up from the crater, clutching her wrist. She stared up.

'What... what's he about to do now.'

Veyruun's voice rolled down from above, shaking the air itself.

"Now, Wu Long."

The sphere swelled, red as blood.

"Witness the end of Wushu Guan."

"Cataclysm Pulse."

The sphere kept growing. Swallowing the sky.

The battle jumped ten gears in a heartbeat.

The sky was already bleeding red. That sphere above Veyruun kept growing, dragging everything into it.

The Grandmasters moved without needing to look at each other.

"We can't stop it," Yagushi said, voice hard.

"Then we weaken it," Jiang replied. "Buy time."

Fei didn't answer. He was already staring up, eyes narrowed.

Yagushi — "Earth Dominion"

SLAM!

Yagushi drove both palms into the ground.

"Earth Dominion!"

GRUUUMMM!

The earth answered.

Entire mountain ranges erupted. Massive stone pillars KRA-KOOM!! shot up from the ground, hundreds of them, skewering toward Veyruun to pin him in place. To crack the concentration feeding that sphere.

Veyruun didn't even look down.

SHATTER—CRACK—BOOM!

He flexed. Most of the pillars exploded into dust.

But dust bought seconds.

And every second counted.

Jiang — "Water dragon"

Seeing the sphere destabilize and swell faster, Jiang threw both arms wide.

WHOOSH—SHHHH!

Water ripped from the ground. Underground springs burst. Distant rivers bent toward him.

A gigantic dragon of water coiled around the crimson sphere.

"It didn't extinguish it. You can't put out a Cataclysm Pulse.

So he cooled it. Stabilized it. Wrapped the heat and pressure in layers of water to slow the reaction. Exquisite!!" Kaguya said in awe, alongside Saburo and Asami.

HISSSS—

Steam exploded into the sky.

The sphere's growth stuttered. Slowed.

"Hold!" Jiang shouted through clenched teeth.

Fei said nothing.

His eyes flared. Dark purple.

"Kairo Stage: Apex."

The world went quiet for him.

Thousands of futures flashed behind his eyes.

Out of all of them...

Only one.

One path where Wushu Guan survived.

The strain hit him instantly. Blood ran from his left eye. His vision blurred at the edges. Partial blindness.

He didn't let anyone see it. Didn't speak.

He just watched that one future, memorizing every step, every movement he'd have to force into reality.

Above them, Veyruun laughed, low and breaking.

"Pathetic. You think you can delay the end?"

The sphere pulsed again. Bigger. Hungrier.

Kai hit the bottom of the crater and didn't get up right away.

THUD!

Above him, the sky was red. That sphere kept growing, eating clouds and stone.

He stared at it. Breathing hard. Blood on his lip.

"Destroying him won't stop it."

The thought cut clean through the noise.

"The Pulse is already independent. It doesn't need Veyruun anymore.

If that thing detonates, Wushu Guan is gone."

His eyes moved. Found Meili. She was on one knee, clutching her cracked wrist, staring up at Veyruun with pure hate.

Kai pushed himself up.

"I'll stop the attack..." he said, voice steady despite the shaking in his arms.

"...You stop him."

Meili turned. "Kai—"

He wasn't listening anymore. His mind went somewhere else. To the conversation he'd had with Sanguine.

_"Can you do it?" Sanguine had asked.

"Only if I don't try to shield myself," Kai answered. "I have to shield everything else instead."

Kai launched himself.

FWOOOSH!

Up. Past the smoke. Past the battlefield. Until the ground was just a scar below him.

The Cataclysm Pulse hung overhead like a second sun.

He planted himself in the air and raised both hands.

"Suspension Post. Absolute Boundary."

The first barrier snapped into place around the sphere.

CRACK!

It shattered instantly.

VNNN—

Second.

CRACK!

VNNN—

Third.

CRACK!

One broke. Then another. Then another.

Each one dying the second it was born.

But every shatter stole something from the Pulse. A fraction of heat. A fraction of force.

Kai made more.

VNNN. CRACK. VNNN. CRACK. VNNN. CRACK.

Blood ran from his eyes.

Snap. His ribs.

Snap. His left arm.

His chi was burning, turning to ash inside him.

"There's no going back now."

Below, Veyruun was pinned. For now.

Yagushi slammed his palms down. "Earth Dominion!"

GRUUUM—KRAKOOM!Stone hands erupted to lock Veyruun's legs.

Jiang screamed, "Now!" and let go.

SHHHHH—BOOM! The water dragon uncoiled and slammed into Veyruun's arms.

Zabuza appeared in a flicker. "Stone Chains!"

CLANG-CLANG-CLANG! They wrapped around his chest.

All four attacks hit at the exact same instant.

Not to damage him.

To force an opening.

Exactly like Fei had seen.

Meili saw it.

And everything hit her at once.

Her promise.

The smell of her village burning.

Their faces.

She moved.

Her foot hit Kai's nearest barrier.

Tap. Used the shattering glass as a step.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

She was climbing the sky. Running up the bones of Kai's failing barriers as they collapsed behind her. She could sense whete they where.

Veyruun looked down, grinning through blood.

"Too late."

Meili didn't answer.

Wind died. Sound died.

There was only the blade, and the oath behind it.

Shhhing!!

"I'll call this Sword Style: Final Oath — Heartpierce."

Not the strongest strike.

Not the fastest.

The truest.

The blade drove straight through Xaphan's chest.

Straight into Veyruun's core.

Silence.

High above, the Cataclysm Pulse twitched.

Then it lost control.

Kai hung in the sky, broken. Bones screaming.

He looked up.

The Pulse was still exploding.

"No. No no no."

His thoughts cut through the pain.

"The barriers held it. But they didn't stop it. It's still going to detonate...

If it goes off now, Wushu Guan burns anyway."

He didn't hesitate.

"Suspension Post. Absolute Boundary."

VNNNNNN—

The sky tore.

A barrier bloomed. Not around him. Around everything.

Larger than the capital itself. A dome of invisible glass swallowing the entire city.

"KAI, STOP!"

Sanguine's voice ripped through his head. Panic.

"Your body can't take it! You'll die!"

Kai shut her out.

"I know."

"Look at me, what a hypocrite!" He smirked.

He poured everything left into it. The last of his chi.

The barrier caught the collapsing Pulse.

BOOOOOOM—

Pressure hit it. And stopped.

For several seconds, the entire sky froze.

No wind. No sound. Just red light pressing against clear glass.

Below, every head turned up.

Meili stopped mid-air. Her eyes locked on him.

"Kai..."

Then—

CRACK!

One barrier shattered.

Then the rest.

CRACK-CRACK-CRACK-CRACK!

The backlash hit him like a mountain.

Kai was thrown.

FWOOOSH—

From the sky, straight down. A falling star in reverse.

" KAI!!" Meili moved instantly. She shot after him, diving through the falling debris.

Above them, Veyruun's soul flickered and came apart inside Xaphan's body. His last words were barely a whisper on the wind,

"Take care, Xaphan. Now... you know what you must do."

Xaphan's body went limp. And fell.

And then—

The Cataclysm Pulse broke.

It dispersed.

Thousands of glowing fragments. Like stars....

They rained down across Wushu Guan. Harmless. Beautiful.

The survivors stared upward, silent.

Watching the sky bleed light instead of ruin.
