"No, thank you, sir," I said politely. I took a few steps backward.
"I can't let you leave here. You know too much. Don't make me chase you."
There was a silence that followed as we both stared at each other.
"I'm just kidding," he said, chuckling.
That broke the ice, and I laughed. That's when he turned and opened the front door.
I stepped forward to enter before I remembered my shoes and coat. I glanced over my shoulder to see if Jonas was nearby. But he was nowhere to be seen.
'This is so unlike him.'
I entered the house and stopped short upon seeing the room full of people. They all stood staring at me with varying degrees of shock.
"Do you all remember, Cecili? She's one of my favorites!" Mr. Cadwell said it proudly.
Everyone greeted me warmly. Most of them hadn't recognized me at first because I was wearing a different dress and had a slight change in appearance due to my pregnancy since the day I returned.
