Chapter 136 - Chapter 30

The Tempests told them everything.

Not in the room — the room was not a room for telling, it was a room for being very still and reading what the demon queen's words had changed about the shape of things, and they were all doing that, the group holding the revelation and turning it over with the careful interior work of people who understood that the next move needed to be built from an accurate picture.

The demon queen had retreated to the corner.

Not fully — she was present, the shadow-that-was-not-shadow still in the room's edge, the cold air still pressing. But she had stepped back from the active presence of a moment ago the way a person stepped back after saying something that needed time to land.

Victor had not moved from his desk.

He was watching the group with the scholar's eyes and the specific expression of a man who had built a sixty-year project on an assumption that had just been revealed to be incomplete and was running the calculation of what the incompleteness meant at a speed that was visible in the set of his jaw.

Mr. Tempest spoke first.

"The spell from the computer," he said, to Thomas. "We need to understand what we have before we use it." He looked at Courtney and at Mrs. Tempest beside him. "The demon queen built the counter-ritual. Which means the spell is designed to work with the dark element specifically. The blood reading and the element combine — Courtney reads the frequency, Katherine provides the closing force." He paused. "But the demon queen said not yet. She said first she would show us what she is."

"She's not a prisoner," Mrs. Tempest said. "She is choosing how this unfolds. She has always been choosing." She looked at the demon queen in the corner. "She let Victor revive her partially. She let us find the spell. She recognized Katherine the moment the dark element entered the building." Her voice was even and careful and carrying the weight of the assessment. "Everything that has happened tonight has been within the range of outcomes she was willing to accept."

"She's been managing this," William said.

"She's been managing this," Mrs. Tempest confirmed.

"Then what is she waiting for," Niall said.

The demon queen spoke from the corner.

"For you to understand what you're closing," she said. "The boundary between the world and what is past it is not simply a barrier. It is the oldest structure in the world. Older than the Glass line. Older than witch hunters. Older than chosen ones." She looked at Katherine. "When you seal it — when you use the dark element the way it was built to be used — you will feel the full weight of what the boundary holds back. Not me. Everything." She paused. "I want you to understand that before you do it. So that the doing of it is real. Not the closing of a door you cannot see into. The sealing of something you understand completely."

The room was very quiet.

"She wants us to fight her," Katherine said slowly.

"She wants you to understand her," Thomas said. He was looking at the demon queen with the green eyes that had been looking at difficult things for a long time and had learned to look at them steadily. "The fighting is the understanding."

The demon queen looked at Thomas.

Something moved through her expression.

"Thomas Riverside," she said. "You understand more than most."

"I've been in rooms like this before," Thomas said.

"Yes," she said. "You have."

She looked at the group.

All of them.

"Then we begin," she said.

The shadow expanded.
