Chapter 137 - Chapter 31

The room became the boundary.

That was the only way Katherine could name what happened when the demon queen moved from the corner into the center of the room — the air changed not in temperature but in quality, the specific quality of the third floor corridor made absolute, and the group felt it simultaneously in the way the group felt things simultaneously when they were all paying the same full attention.

The demon queen was not fighting them.

She was being what she was.

Fully. The complete version of Alyssa — three hundred years past the boundary, the thing that had been a witch who had gone too far and had become something that had no name in any language except the one she had given it. The shadow that was not shadow expanded through the room and the cold that was not temperature moved through all of them and the dark element in Katherine surged to meet it.

The group responded.

Not on a signal — the signal was unnecessary, the way the signal was always unnecessary when the group had been together long enough. Niall's earth came up through the building's bones, the floor of the third floor cracking slightly as the deep grammar of the ground pushed back against the presence pressing down on it. Carlyle's water moved through the air, changing the room's atmosphere, the specific resistance of water to things that tried to move through it without permission. Fenix's fire ran along the walls in controlled lines — not consuming, directing, the precision fire that moved like intention and that the demon queen's cold had to push against to keep advancing.

Kristen blinked.

She blinked into the specific spaces where the cold was thinnest and her light disrupted it, the blink-light carrying a quality that the demon queen's presence had to account for the way it had to account for everything the chosen ones threw at it — not defeating it, but occupying it, the specific strategy of seventeen people who understood that their individual powers were not enough and that the combination was the only thing that had a chance.

Courtney had her hands raised.

The Blood Magic was reading the room at full extension, reading the demon queen's anchor frequency at the proximity the blood reading had required, and what it was reading was enormous — the full weight of the boundary, the oldest structure in the world, the thing the demon queen had said Katherine would feel when she used the dark element to seal it.

Courtney was feeling it now.

Her face had gone the color of someone who had extended their power to the edge of what it held and was pressing past that edge because the moment required it.

"Katherine," Courtney said.

Katherine was already moving.

The dark element at full extension — not the combat spiral, not the contemplative spiral, the third thing, the thing she had felt the shape of in training and had never fully opened because Thomas had said the full version required the full understanding and she had not had it yet.

She had it now.

She felt the boundary.

The demon queen had told her she would feel it and she had understood the words and now she felt the reality and the reality was that what the demon queen had said was true — it was not a barrier, it was a structure, the oldest structure, and the weight of what it held on the other side of it was the weight of everything that had ever tried to cross back through it and had been held.

It was enormous.

The group was pushing against the demon queen's presence from every direction — fire and water and earth and light and blood and wind and the dark element all simultaneously, the specific combined expression of seventeen powers working as one thing — and it was working, the cold receding slightly, the shadow pulling back from the edges of the room.

But not enough.

The demon queen looked at Katherine through the pressure of all of it.

Her eyes were not the eyes of something being defeated.

They were the eyes of something that was showing what it was and that what it was had not been fully shown yet.

"Not yet," she said.

The shadow expanded.

The group held.

They held for thirty seconds — the full combined pressure of everything they had, the specific collective intelligence of a group that had been building toward exactly this and was using everything it had built — and then the thirty seconds ended and the demon queen was still there and the cold was still there and the boundary weight was still there and the group had reached the end of what the first attempt held.

"Out," Thomas said.

He said it the way he said things that were not negotiable.

The group moved.

Back through the door. Into the corridor. The demon queen did not follow — she stayed in the room, the cold staying with her, the shadow retreating back to the corner as though the room was the extent of where she chose to be.

The corridor was cold.

The group was breathing hard.

No one was down. Everyone standing, some of them marked by the attempt — Niall's hands where the earth had come back through him with more force than expected, Courtney pale and leaning against the wall with the exhaustion of Blood Magic pushed past its comfortable limit, Katherine with the dark element still cycling too fast and the weight of the boundary in her chest like something she had picked up and had not yet figured out how to put down.

"We need the spell," Katherine said.

"We need more than the spell," Courtney said. She pushed off the wall. Her voice was steady in the way voices were steady when the person was using will instead of energy. "I have the reading. The full frequency. But the closing requires the spell and the dark element and — something else. Something I felt in the room." She looked at Katherine. "The boundary doesn't close from the outside. It closes from the inside. The dark element has to go through the anchor, not at it."

"Through it," Katherine said.

"The way the grandmother's vial distributed the forbidden magic's cost," Courtney said. "Not a strike. A passing through. The dark element moving through the anchor the way water moves through a crack — finding the specific shape of it and filling it and closing it from within."

Katherine looked at the door.

At the room behind it.

"I need to go back in," she said.

"Yes," Thomas said.

"With the spell active," Courtney said. "Combined with the frequency I read. All of it at once."

"One more attempt," Thomas said. To the group. "Everything we have. Together."

The group looked at him.

They looked at each other.

Then Niall flexed his hands and said: "Ready."

One by one the room said it.

Ready.
