Chapter 57 - Chapter 57: Velvet Lies and Fleeting Goodbyes

"Shit, shit, where's my phone?" Ryan muttered, running a hand through his hair as he scanned the lounge floor. "Wasn't it—ah, found it."

Luna barely had time to tuck in his shirt before Ryan's phone lit up with a buzzing vengeance. Ryan glanced at the screen and grimaced.

"Luka. Again. Crap."

Luna's eyes widened. "Oh no—mine's dead."

Ryan answered, trying to sound breezy, but Luna could still hear the hint of oh-no-we're-about-to-get-busted in his tone. "Hey man! Yeah, we were just—uh—doing a walkthrough."

"…You were what?" Luka's voice crackled through the speaker, sharp and suspicious.

"Touring the space," Ryan said, louder, mouthing go with it at Luna. "Y'know, giving Luna the grand DJ backstage experience."

Luna straightened, cheeks still pink, and chirped, "Yeah! There's like… bars and velvet chairs and stuff. It was cool!"

There was a pause on the other end. Then a sigh. "Well, I've been looking for you two for twenty minutes. I'm by the main stage—Luna, come on. I'm taking you home."

Ryan hung up with a wince. "Time to look innocent."

"I'm not sure that's possible anymore," Luna muttered, buttoning the last button on his shirt with fingers that still trembled a little.

They half-ran through the halls, Luna smoothing his hair while Ryan straightened out his shirt, trying to look less like someone who'd just rearranged a boy's entire world on a velvet couch.

They found Luka pacing near the main stage, arms folded, looking every bit the exasperated older cousin trying very hard to pretend he didn't suspect anything.

"There you are," Luka snapped. "You were supposed to do a quick tour, not a full renovation."

"Lost track of time," Ryan said, all easy charm.

Luna bounced up beside him, still flushed, but chipper. "There's a white bar. And love seats. It's very… plush."

Luka narrowed his eyes. "Right. Well, let's go. I'll drop you off, Luna."

He turned, already walking toward the exit. "And maybe next time, don't kill your phone battery while hanging out with your Chaos God of a boyfriend, yeah?"

"Not my boyfriend," Luna mumbled—just loud enough for himself.

Ryan, smirking, leaned in and gave him a firm smack on the ass. "Yet."

Luna yelped, stumbling forward with an indignant squeak. "R-Ryan!"

Luka glanced over his shoulder. "What was that?"

"Nothing!" Luna's voice hit a new octave. "Coming!"

He scampered after Luka, catching up quickly, but couldn't help glancing back one last time.

Ryan stood beneath the soft stage lights, hands in his pockets, watching him go with that same maddening smirk—the kind that made you feel like your clothes were see-through and your soul was already owned.

And just as Luna's heart stuttered, Ryan winked.

Something fluttered in Luna's chest. Something he didn't have a name for, but it felt… Familiar.
