The car was warm, the kind of quiet warmth that settled into your bones after too much tension and too many secrets. Luka turned the engine over with a muttered sigh, the headlights spilling soft white across the parking lot gravel. Outside, the world buzzed with the leftover electricity of the rave-in-progress, but inside the car, everything was velvet hush.
They pulled out onto the road in silence.
Luna stared out the window, watching the streetlights flick past like falling stars. His limbs were heavy, not just from what had happened in the lounge but from the slow realization that everything might've just shifted beneath his feet—and he hadn't even resisted.
Lo-fi hums crackled through the old car speakers. A girl was singing something melancholy over a drumbeat that felt like a heartbeat two streets away.
Then—
"Goddammit," Luka muttered.
Luna blinked. "What?"
Luka's hands tightened on the steering wheel. "Is that a bite mark on your neck?"
Luna shrank an inch into his hoodie. "…Maybe?"
"Maybe?!" Luka exclaimed, swerving slightly before correcting the wheel with a curse. "He did that under my nose! I was right there!"
"It wasn't like that," Luna said quickly, cheeks pink. "I—I wanted it. I want him."
Luka shot him a look, but his lips parted slightly in surprise. The anger simmered, then softened, sighing out of him like steam from a kettle taken off the stove just in time.
"You… really do, huh?"
Luna nodded, eyes forward again. "Yeah."
A pause. The song changed. The new one had vinyl crackles and a soft piano loop.
Luka exhaled slowly, tapping his fingers on the wheel. "Alright. I can see it now. You're not being pushed around."
"No," Luna said, firm for once. "I don't feel… trapped. I know how it might look from the outside, but Ryan—he listens. He waits for me to want things. And tonight, I did."
"Luna," Luka said gently, "I get it. I do. But you've still got Rachel to think about."
"I know."
"One wrong step and the whole thing—whatever fragile little dance you three are doing—it'll snap. And when it does, it won't just be yours to grieve. It'll hurt her, too."
Luna's smile dimmed, thoughtful now. "I'll be careful," he said. "I'll talk to her. I want to be honest. I just… I think I want Ryan. I really like him."
Luka glanced over, caught the softness in Luna's expression, the far-off glow in his eyes.
"That look," he muttered. "God, you've got that stupid 'I think I'm falling in love with a stray dog' face."
Luna laughed, light and sweet. "Don't call him a stray dog."
"Fine," Luka said, lips twitching. "A stray wolf, then."
The road stretched ahead, quiet and endless, bathed in the pale hush of overhead lights and half-dreamt wishes.
Then Luka added, more softly, "Just promise me something."
"Yeah?"
"If things get weird. Or hard. Or confusing… come to me, alright? You don't have to figure it all out alone. I'll always be on your side, even if I don't like the guy sniffing around your throat."
Luna's heart swelled. He looked over, smile warm and real.
"Thanks, Luka. I really mean that."
Luka reached over and ruffled his hair, the way he used to when they were kids. "I know, runt. Now shut up before I start getting sentimental."
