Chapter 4663: Exchange of Secrets
The siblings' reunion left Sovereign Sun brimming with joy. After all, Sovereign September had spent tens of thousands of years on edge, living each day in fear, and now, before her elder brother, she completely let down her Sovereign's dignity. Yet, their happiness was soon interrupted by a voice that didn't blend in at all.
"It's done. Now can I have what you promised me?"
Lin Moyu stood to the side, voice calm a sharp contrast to the siblings' delight.
Sovereign September asked, "Brother, what did you promise him?"
Sovereign Sun replied, "It's that secret art we got. We studied it for so many years without making progress, but now it's finally found its use."
A flash of hesitation crossed Sovereign September's eyes. As a Sovereign, there were few things beyond her understanding, and that secret art was one of them. All she grasped was that it was of an extremely high tier, possibly above Sovereign level but even after a million years of research, that's all she had managed to find out. Though reluctant, she recalled Lin Moyu's actions and knew that if she reneged, the consequences would be far worse. So, she tacitly approved the deal, not objecting.
True to his word, Sovereign Sun handed Lin Moyu the secret art a crystal clear gem, an almost perfect polyhedron with uncountable faces. A single ray of light reflected from it would multiply tenfold, making it beautiful. But on the surface, it showed no special aura just a lovely jewel, betraying nothing of the supreme technique contained within.
Lin Moyu accepted it unceremoniously. "Deal's done. Time for me to go."
"Wait!" Sovereign September suddenly called.
Lin Moyu asked, "Is there something else?"
Sovereign September replied, "There are some questions I want to ask."
Lin Moyu nodded. "Since the transaction was pleasant, go ahead."
She signaled to Sovereign Sun, who obediently left without hesitation.
Lin Moyu laughed softly, "Worried he'll take on karma he doesn't need? It's not necessary. You see clearly now, don't you? I'm the enemy of this heaven and earth. My karma is endless, and with a catastrophe coming, none of you can escape."
Sovereign September understood already, upon returning, the changes in the world had let her deduce much. Sovereigns had such understanding and resonance with the world that they could grasp many secrets. Whenever they found things they didn't understand, curiosity overwhelmed them, fueling a fierce urge to dig deeper. In other words, knowing everything is boring, but facing a mystery makes one burn with interest.
Sovereign September was now thoroughly intrigued by Lin Moyu. Her first question:
"Are you the reincarnation of Calamity Sovereign?"
Lin Moyu laughed. "So you're sure I'm not just his will's successor. Sorry, I'm not his reincarnation either."
She started to ask a second question, but Lin Moyu cut her off: "Now it's my turn. We take turns, one question each fair, right?"
She agreed. "Alright, your turn."
Lin Moyu asked, "Why did you stand against Calamity Sovereign?"
A subtle aura stretched out; Xiao Peng, under Lin Moyu's orders, secretly activated the Spirit Concealing Pearl to keep the conversation private.
Sovereign September sighed, "I wasn't precisely his enemy. I just disagreed with him. Back then, he was ready to stake everything to break the so called 'Dao.' I didn't think it was necessary."
"I felt we each could pursue our own path maybe even reach the 'Dao's' height in the end. If we had to fight later, we'd have a better chance."
"I knew of his preparations he set a grand array in the Extreme East, but I didn't sabotage it."
She explained at length: Back then, Sovereign September and Calamity Sovereign were friends, comrades who traveled the Chaos Wilderness, searching for wonders. But when it came to the fight against the 'Dao', they disagreed, which led to conflict.
Sovereign September believed they could forge their own way, reach the 'Dao's' level, and then, with solid preparation, defeat it. Calamity Sovereign, however, insisted on staking everything, using even his own death to wound the Dao and set up his plans for the future. A key figure was the Fate Sovereign, whose mastery of destiny foretold certain outcomes, strengthening Calamity Sovereign's resolve.
But Sovereign September insisted fate's predictions were unreliable; the future always shifts. If Calamity Sovereign fell and destiny changed unexpectedly, it'd all be for nothing.
Lin Moyu understood her rationale but knew she didn't grasp the deeper schemes. Unbeknownst to Sovereign September, Calamity Sovereign had left himself a way out; he'd never truly died, but faked his death and even deceived the Dao.
Fate Sovereign's calculations were accurate because Calamity Sovereign hadn't perished, keeping destiny on course.
As long as he lived, he could correct the course, no matter how events shifted. The small details might change, but not the overall trend such was fate.
Perhaps too many years of silence loosened her tongue. She spoke at length, and Lin Moyu listened patiently, understanding at last what had truly occurred.
She'd never been committed to opposing Calamity Sovereign if she'd wanted to, she could have destroyed his grand array in the East ages ago, given her power.
Her second question: "If you aren't his reincarnation, then who are you?"
Lin Moyu laughed. "Looks like Calamity Sovereign never told you what Fate Sovereign foresaw. Who I am doesn't really matter I'm just myself: Lin Moyu, a cultivator from the Chaos Wilderness. That question's wasted. But I'll tell you one more thing: Calamity Sovereign isn't dead."
"What!?"
Sovereign September was shocked, her expression showing how deeply this startled her she'd been out of touch for these tens of thousands of years.
Lin Moyu laughed. "Don't be so surprised. Now, it's my turn again…"
Question by question, Lin Moyu gathered much of what he wanted, and Sovereign September did as well. The exchange left them both with what they sought, and Sovereign September moved from shock to gradually accepting reality.
Lin Moyu noticed she was still at odds with Calamity Sovereign. Knowing now that he'd set yet another secret scheme, Sovereign September's surprise turned to anger, even stirring a hint of killing intent. In her eyes, Calamity Sovereign had played them all for fools intolerable!
