Chapter 9 - The Charity Gala at Grand Bay

The Grand Bay Club sat perched on a private peninsula overlooking the harbor, its glass-and-marble architecture glowing under warm floodlights. Sleek luxury vehicles rolled up the circular driveway, dropping off high-society figures, tech moguls, and old-money aristocrats clad in diamonds and silk.

When the rear door of the black EL family sedan opened, a quiet stillness rippled through the valet line.

Chrystlene stepped out onto the red carpet. She wore a floor-length charcoal silk gown designed with clean, sculptural lines—sophisticated, bold, and entirely devoid of unnecessary frills. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves pinned back on one side with a minimalist diamond clip, revealing her sharp jawline and clear skin.

She wasn't just beautiful; she possessed a serene, absolute presence that commanded the room before she even spoke a word.

"Is that... Chrystlene EL?" a young heir from a media conglomerate whispered to his companion, his champagne glass hovering mid-air. "Since when did she carry the aura of an empress?"

"I heard she completely restructured EL Logistics last week," a businesswoman nearby replied, eyeing Chrystlene with a mix of awe and envy. "She forced Director Vane out and blocked a fraudulent contract with Apex Freight in a single morning."

Chrystlene walked into the main hall with effortless grace, nodding politely to a few familiar faces.

Everyone is staring at us, Chrysty remarked, her tone filled with a quiet sense of triumph rather than her past anxiety. And not because of some ridiculous outfit Jurianna forced on us. They're actually looking at you with respect.

"Respect is earned through competence, Chrysty," Chrystlene replied mentally, taking a thin flute of sparkling water from a passing tray. "Once people realize you can't be easily manipulated, their attitude changes quickly."

As Chrystlene navigated the grand reception area, several prominent figures approached her to test the waters.

"Miss EL," called out President Zhao of Zhao Financial, a veteran investor known for cornering young heirs into unfavorable venture deals. He stepped into her path with a wide, practiced smile. "I was deeply saddened to hear about Director Vane's departure. If the EL Group needs temporary liquidity or asset management while you restructure, my firm is ready to step in with a generous credit line."

Chrystlene halted, offering him a smooth, perfectly polite smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"That's very thoughtful of you, President Zhao," she said, her voice rich and composed enough to draw the attention of nearby guests. "Though according to Zhao Financial's Q2 public filing, your short-term debt ratio rose by fourteen percent following your over-leveraged acquisition in the tech sector. Offering us liquidity right now seems... rather risky for your own balance sheet, doesn't it?"

President Zhao's smile froze instantly. A few surrounding CEOs gasped softly, exchanging amused glances behind their glasses.

"I... well, that acquisition is a long-term play—" Zhao stammered, adjusting his collar.

"Of course it is," Chrystlene interrupted gently, taking a delicate sip of her water. "I wish you the best of luck with your cash flow. If you'll excuse me."

She stepped past him smoothly, leaving the veteran investor standing in stunned silence.

That was incredible! Chrysty cheered in their mind space. He's been trying to prey on Grandfather's smaller holdings for years! You shut him down in three sentences!

"He brought weak numbers to a conversation with someone who actually reads financial reports," Chrystlene said quietly. "It was practically an invitation."

"You certainly don't hold back, Miss EL."

A deep, resonant voice echoed from behind her. Chrystlene turned smoothly to find Roy Vanguard standing a few feet away.

He looked effortlessly striking in a bespoke black tuxedo, his tall, broad-shouldered frame exuding a quiet, commanding weight that naturally made surrounding guests give him a wide berth. His dark eyes were fixed on her, holding a faint, intriguing warmth beneath his sharp exterior.

For a brief moment, their eyes locked, and a quiet shift occurred in the atmosphere around them. The chatter of the gala seemed to fade into background noise.

"Mr. Vanguard," Chrystlene said, bowing her head slightly with understated elegance. "I see you prefer to make your entrances after the initial warm-up."

"I prefer to observe before taking a position," Roy replied, stepping closer. Up close, his dark eyes held an intense, analytical clarity. He looked at her not as a pampered socialite, but as a peer. "And watching you dismantle President Zhao was worth arriving early."

"He was overzealous," Chrystlene said smoothly, casually turning to walk toward the outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean. Roy fell into step beside her, his long stride matching her composed pace. "People in this city seem to mistake politeness for weakness."

"Most people in this city are weak," Roy noted, his voice carrying a cool, grounded weight as they stepped into the refreshing night air. The cool sea breeze fluttered the hem of her dark gown, but she didn't shiver. "They rely on heritage and titles rather than sharp instincts. But you... you're managing the EL family's interests with a precision I haven't seen in years."

Chrystlene rested one hand against the marble terrace railing, looking out over the dark water dotted with distant ship lights. "I simply believe in protecting what belongs to my family. Which brings me to your invitation, Mr. Vanguard. I doubt you invited me here just to compliment my financial literacy."

Roy chuckled softly—a low, smooth sound that surprised even himself. He leaned against the railing beside her, turning his gaze toward her profile.

"Direct as always," Roy said, pulling a sleek leather tablet from his coat pocket and tapping the screen before placing it on the railing between them. "I'm offering EL Logistics an exclusive partnership on our northern maritime trade corridor."

Chrystlene glanced at the screen. The terms displayed were surprisingly favorable—a sixty-forty split in favor of EL Logistics for regional distribution, with Vanguard International covering forty percent of the insurance risk.

She raised an eyebrow, looking up at him. "This is a remarkably generous offer from a man known for driving ruthless bargains. What's the catch?"

"No catch," Roy said, his dark gaze locking onto hers with absolute sincerity. "When Director Vane was running your shipping department, your supply lines were leaky and vulnerable. I wouldn't have trusted EL Group with a single crate. But under your leadership? You caught the Apex Freight discrepancy before my own intelligence team finalized their report."

Chrystlene met his gaze without backing down, a subtle, confident smirk touching her lips. "So you're betting on my capability."

"I'm investing in a strong partner," Roy corrected smoothly, taking a half-step closer. The subtle scent of cedar and cold iron radiated off him. "The business landscape in this city is shifting, Chrystlene. The old players are getting soft and corrupt. Working together secures both of our positions at the top."

He called you Chrystlene, Chrysty whispered, her spirit floating nearby with a light, excited flutter. And he's offering a deal that could double our quarterly profit margin!

Chrystlene tapped her finger thoughtfully on the edge of the tablet, evaluating the proposition with sharp clarity.

"The terms are acceptable, Mr. Vanguard," Chrystlene said, turning to face him fully, her charcoal gown shifting gracefully around her. "On one condition."

Roy raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Name it."

"EL Logistics retains full operational control over the port scheduling," she said, her voice firm and unwavering. "I don't share command on distribution routes."

Roy stared at her for a long second, taking in her poised stature, her striking beauty under the moonlight, and the absolute authority in her tone. Instead of being offended, a genuine, rare smile broke across his sharp features.

"Agreed," Roy said, reaching out his hand. "We'll have the formal contracts drafted by morning."

Chrystlene reached out and placed her hand in his. His grip was firm, warm, and steady—a gesture between two equals who recognized each other's strength.

As they shook hands, several prominent guests watching from the glass doors of the ballroom gasped quietly.

"Is Roy Vanguard... making a deal directly with Chrystlene EL?" a director murmured to his colleague. "Since when does he handle negotiations personally?"

"Forget the deal," the colleague replied, staring in disbelief. "Look at the way he's looking at her. That man hasn't smiled at anyone in five years."

On the terrace, Roy didn't immediately let go of her hand, his dark eyes lingering on hers with an unspoken, deep intriguing interest.

"I believe the auction is about to start," Roy said softly, his deep voice carrying over the sound of the crashing waves below. "May I escort you inside, Miss EL?"

Chrystlene offered him a smooth, brilliant smile—one that radiated absolute confidence. "Lead the way, Mr. Vanguard."
