Chapter 3 - Escaping Birds

"Im going, I have to return the favor." He told himself as he sprinted from the brush towards the door.

His sudden appearance made the girl jerk a bit as she thought it was the man returning, but once she saw it was Damon, she looked at him with wild eyes.

"What are, what, I thought you were dead."

"I thought I was too, I have to find something to get these chains off. I doubt we have much time."

"You idiot, you should leave. You can escape and bring back help."

"Yea, I thought about that, but im sure we are a long way from society. You and the others could be dead by the time I find help."

The white haired beauty starred at him with sharp irritated eyes for a moment before asking him to lift her up by her legs. It only took a second for Damon to catch on to her plan.

Hugging her legs, he firmly pushed up lifting her wrist chains off the dangling hook.

"Quick, grab one of those iron rods and try to break the chains on my ankles, Im not suspended in the air anymore but I won't get far like this."

Damon dashed into action grabbing a steel poker rod that wasn't partially submerged in the fire. With only a few attempts, they quickly understood it was no hope of breaking the chain with it, not without having enough time to do so. It also made too much noise in which they both agreed to just get out quickly.

The girl could walk, but running was out of the question. Just before they exited a gut feeling made Damon look down at the small chains that once restrained him.

"The key."

The key was still inside the small lock of the chains he wore and within a few seconds the chains of the girl was hitting the floor.

"Come on, let's go." She said moving towards the door when they heard another voice.

"Wait, help...take me as well. I don't wanna die. "

Turning around, one out of the remaining four kids that were hanging was now conscious. A red haired pale skin boy that was much bigger than Damon.

"Come on, there's no time." She said not even giving the boy a second look.

Damon on the other hand rushed back unlocking the chains on his feet. He then picked him up high enough to free his wrists from the hooks and unlocked the other chains setting his hands free.

"Thanks, my nam....."

"Let's go." Damon said cutting him off while darting out the door. The white haired girl was nowhere in sight as they both ran towards the side of the house and entering the tree-line of the forest.

"She just left us, without a second thought." The red haired boy whispered as they both looked around.

"Can you blame her ? We already lost too much time. Let's go, we can only hope she'll be ok."

"What about the others, there were more, are we just going to leave them here ?

"Im not going back, here...be my guest." Damon whispered back while handing him the key to the shackles and running off.

The boy looked at the door and then at Damon's fading running figure.

"Wait, im coming. "

A while later they reached a part of the forest that was more clean and clear. The vegetation of the forest floor was low and the trees had less low hanging branches. The rain had come to nothing but sprinkles as Damon became more confident of the distance they traveled.

Damon's ability was useless, but it was also unique. He could make it rain for as long as he wanted to and it didn't affect his stamina in anyway. It only took one concentrated thought and zero energy which made him believe his ability was different from any other he had seen. He also believed it took no stamina and zero energy because it was so useless.

At the moment he could only make it rain at a thirty meter circular radius and could make it follow him wherever he went in which he was doing the entire time. The only other skill he could perform was called increase. Which was simply an increase in his speed, strength, agility and stamina. It was only affective while inside the radius of his rain.

Damon and the red haired boy had now reached a marsh area, a great distance away from the house, at least three hundred or so meters.

"Hold it, let's take quick break. We've been running for a while now, we should be in the clear right ?" Spoke the large red haired boy.

Seeing the boy without being in a clear panic and rush, Damon glanced over him once more before answering.

"Yea, but only for couple minutes. "

The boy was only a foot taller than Damon, but his body was well defined for a kid. His muscles were rather bulky and his eyes had a red glare to them.

"Damn, this thing hurts. What do you suppose he branded us for, Slave trade maybe ?" He said pulling up his long red hair and tying it in a knot on the top of his head revealing his brand that was on the back of his neck and upper back.

Damon looked seeing his brand was much smaller than his own. Wondering why for a brief moment, nothing came to mind as the boy asked his question again.

"I don't know, but that does seem like the right assumption. It's hard to think right now, my mind is very foggy. I can't remember much up to the point I woke up in chains."

"Yea, you're right, my memory is wrecked it's like im missing large pieces. I, I remember my name, but that's it....there's something pulling in my head like strings. It's blocking parts of my memory. I can't even remember my mother, or father."

Damon took in a deep breath and exhaled slowly while twisting his lips in thought.

"Yea, it's the same with me, but I can remember things about my mother and father. I just can't picture them, I can remember small events as well, but there's definitely a hole in my memory. " Damon said while looking around wincing in pain every now and then.

They both became silent as they were in deep thought while paying attention to their surroundings until Damon snapped out of it urging them to move ahead and pick up the pace.

As they pushed through the small marsh area which wasn't deep at all they continued to talk a bit.

"My name is Jasper, thanks for saving me back there."

"Sure thing, im Damon." He Responded while pushing down on the high grass near the edges of the marsh area.

After reaching the other side they moved swiftly continuing to press forward. It turned out Jasper was 12 years old, two years older than Damon and was nearing his awakened age which was thirteen.

Damon on the other hand awakened three years earlier. It was super rare for someone to awaken an ability in their world before they're thirteenth birthday but not unheard of.

Before they knew it, they had walked and ran for hours. Parched with low energy, they found themselves sitting under a large tree watching the sun emerge while barely staying awake. They were hungry, tired and wounded.

Jasper was the first to fall asleep, but Damon drifted off soon after. It was nothing he could do, his body and mind needed to rest. Some time later he was awaken by rustling branches and light footsteps.

Springing to his feet, he was met with a sharp object pointing at his neck. His face twisted in fear until his sunset colored eyes connected with a pair of white eyes with sky blue pupils and light pink iris.

"It's you." Damon said softly.

It was the girl from before, the only difference was her beautiful white hair and porcelain milk colored skin wasn't so beautiful. She was filthy and looked to be exhausted.

She relaxed a bit taking the fireplace poker away from Damon's neck while exhaling softly.

"So you guys made it after all."

Damon glanced down at Jasper who was dead sleep with an unreal amount of drool hanging from his mouth before answering.

"Yes, we managed as well."

She said nothing, instead she took a seat at the base of a nearby tree and closed her eyes holding the iron rod tight and close to her chest.

"I need to rest." She whispered.

"Ok, ill keep watch for a while, what's your name by the way ? "

"Raya." She mumbled before instantly drifting off.

Damon watched carefully and fully understood how drained she was, mainly because he was passed his limits as well. Despite that, he managed to stay alert for over an hour, it was becoming hotter, but the shade the trees provided helped them out greatly.

Not being able to handle exhaustion any further, he carefully woke Jasper up who had gotten more rest than anyone. After Whispering to him about the girl and informing him what happened. Damon leaned against the tree while Jasper took watch.

"This bitch tried to make Damon leave me, she's lucky we got enough trouble on our hands already." Jasper thought to himself while looking at the girl as she slept.

Time passed by and it was now mid day, the shade under the tree moved as the sun rose higher making a little light hit Damon's face. Wincing in discomfort, his consciousness slowly awakened as he opened his eyes.

His sight was a little blurry at first because of the sunlight, but soon adjusted. Hearing movements and shuffling in the bushes a couple meters away he glanced around noticing Jasper was gone.

"You big idiot, what part of take watch didn't you understa....."

Damon's words came to a halt as he walked towards the shuffling noise. His breathing paused in fear and his eyes widened with horror as Jasper was covered in webs being dragged away by some kind of spider beast.

"Wake up." He shouted.

The girl eyes shot open and she sprung into action holding out the sharp rod looking around.

"It took Jasper, it took Jasper. " he shouted while pointing.

Just as Damon shouted those words, a gut feeling made him look up. The next second he was diving out the way as a dark brown and black spider beast launched from the tree above.
