I turned my head, my heart quickening with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.
A figure emerged from the darkness, regularly becoming clearer inside the moonlight. It was Mrs. Thompson, my elderly neighbor from some homes. Her gray hair turned into a smartly tied return, and her eyes sparkled with interest.
"Jacqueline? Is that truly you?" she said, her voice tinged with wonder.
I stood up, presenting a tentative smile. "Yes, Mrs. Thompson, it's me. I've come back."
She moved closer quickly, a warm smile spreading throughout her face. "Oh, Jacqueline, it's so right to see you! I observed someone was back at the house and had to come and spot for myself. How have you been?"
I felt a rush of heat at her proper concern. "I've been okay. It's been a long journey, but I'm right here now, looking to begin."
