Yume glanced at Caine as he hit the rock and then looked right back at Chuck's hand, spotting the gun. The chamber still shimmered with the thin sheen of her own concoction, the same faint glimmer she knew too well.

"So that's what you're using my illusion fluids for. Making bullets," Yume said.

"Yes, but as you know, it won't last," Chuck replied.

"So how long will it take to wear off?" Danny said, his eyes locked onto Caine's insane action.

"It'll wear off in the next fifteen seconds, but right now, I think I'm gonna tap out," Chuck replied.

Echoes crawled along the stone, thin and nervous in the hush.

"Yeah me too, I don't like this guy," Mira said.

His breath came even, but his pulse beat hard behind his eyes.

"More like you're both tired," Danny teased.

The air smelt faintly of dust, metal, and something bitter-sweet.

"No, I'm not," Chuck replied.

Small grains skittered underfoot, tracing half-circles around planted heels.
