At twilight, the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles was brightly lit. Accompanied by the orchestra, several children dressed as mice, cats, and hounds were energetically performing a chase on the temporary stage.
On the wooden sign at the top of the stage, in adorable round script, was written "Tom and Jerry."
"Tom the Cat" was being harassed non-stop by "Jerry," drawing bouts of laughter from the hundreds of nobles in the hall.
Soon, the play ended, and the Crown Princess brought the children who participated in the performance to the crowd, smiling as she announced, "These lovely children are the first batch rescued by the Paris New District Orphanage."
As she introduced them, the children removed their headgear to reveal their thin, haggard faces, causing the noblewomen to sigh with compassion.
