Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The First Anomaly

Three years.

That was how long Ben had spent inside his private dimension.

Three years of training.

Three years of studying.

Three years of experimenting with the Omnitrix.

Three years of trying to understand the ridiculous amount of knowledge that had been placed inside his mind.

And yet, when Ben finally stepped out of the dimensional portal, only a little over an hour had passed in the outside world.

He stood in the middle of his bedroom and looked at the clock.

9:47 p.m.

Ben blinked.

"Seriously?"

Lyra stepped out of the portal behind him.

"Your calculation was correct. Fifty-three minutes have passed."

Ben rubbed his face.

"It feels wrong."

"What does?"

"Spending years training and then coming back to the outside world like nothing happened."

Lyra smiled.

"You wished for a private dimension with accelerated time."

"I know."

"Then perhaps you should not complain about receiving exactly what you wished for."

Ben looked at her.

"You're getting sarcastic."

"I have been studying human behavior."

"That's dangerous."

"I agree."

Ben laughed.

Then his expression became serious.

He looked down at the Omnitrix.

The device looked almost exactly the same as before.

Almost.

The green glow seemed slightly brighter.

The interface had changed subtly.

New symbols appeared around the dial whenever Ben focused on it.

He had noticed the changes during training.

At first, he thought they were glitches.

Then he realized they weren't.

The Omnitrix was changing.

Slowly.

Constantly.

Adapting to him.

Ben hadn't yet discovered exactly what it was becoming.

And that bothered him.

He hated unknown variables.

Especially when the unknown variable was attached to his wrist.

"Tomorrow," Ben said.

Lyra looked at him.

"Tomorrow?"

"I'll study the Omnitrix."

"You have school."

Ben's face fell.

"Don't remind me."

The Morning After

The next morning arrived far too quickly.

Ben woke up at 6:30.

He stared at the ceiling.

His mind was still thinking about the Omnitrix.

He had spent three years analyzing its energy patterns.

He had studied its internal systems.

He had compared its technology against thousands of known alien technologies.

He had even created simulations to test how the device might react to his unique genetic and dimensional conditions.

But every time he thought he understood it—

It changed.

The Omnitrix wasn't simply a tool.

It was learning.

And so was he.

Ben got dressed and headed downstairs.

Alfred was waiting.

"Good morning, Master Ben."

"Morning."

"Did you sleep well?"

"Not really."

"Your training?"

Ben nodded.

"The Omnitrix is changing."

Alfred immediately became attentive.

"Is it malfunctioning?"

"No."

Ben sat down.

"That's the problem."

Alfred raised an eyebrow.

"Please elaborate."

"It's functioning perfectly."

Ben picked up a piece of toast.

"But it's doing things it wasn't originally designed to do."

Alfred considered that.

"Perhaps your previous wish has affected its capabilities."

"That's what I'm thinking."

"Would you like me to arrange additional equipment for your research?"

Ben smiled.

"Already ordered."

"I expected nothing less."

Ben took another bite.

"By the way, what do you know about Peter Parker?"

Alfred paused.

"Why?"

"Curiosity."

"Peter Parker is academically gifted. He has an interest in science and engineering."

Ben nodded.

"Anything unusual?"

"Nothing that would qualify as unusual."

Ben looked at him.

"Interesting."

Alfred calmly continued serving breakfast.

"Is there a reason you are interested in him?"

Ben shook his head.

"Not yet."

Midtown High

Ben arrived at school at 8:10.

He stepped out of the car.

The moment he entered the building, he heard familiar voices.

"Ben!"

Ben looked over.

Peter Parker waved at him.

Next to Peter stood Ned Leeds.

Ben recognized him immediately.

Ned looked at Ben curiously.

"So you're the new guy."

Ben smiled.

"Apparently."

"I'm Ned."

"Ben."

"I know."

Ben raised an eyebrow.

Ned pointed at him.

"You're kind of difficult to forget."

Peter sighed.

"Ned."

"What?"

"You're making it weird."

"I'm not making it weird."

"You are."

Ben laughed.

"You two always like this?"

"Yes," Peter said.

"No," Ned said at the same time.

Ben smiled.

"Interesting."

Peter shook his head.

"Ignore him."

"Hey!"

The three walked toward class together.

Ben noticed something immediately.

Peter seemed nervous.

Not normal nervous.

He kept looking toward the windows.

Then toward the hallway.

Then back at his phone.

Ben noticed.

"Everything okay?"

Peter froze.

"Yeah."

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

Ned looked at Peter.

"You didn't sleep again, did you?"

Peter gave him a warning look.

Ben pretended not to notice.

Something is definitely going on.

But he wasn't going to force the issue.

Not yet.

The Science Lab

Their first class was advanced science.

The teacher entered carrying a small metal case.

"Today, we're going to conduct an experiment."

The students immediately became more interested.

Ben sat beside Peter.

The teacher placed the case on the table.

"Inside this container is a prototype energy-storage device developed through a partnership with a private research company."

Ben's attention immediately sharpened.

Energy storage.

That was interesting.

The teacher continued.

"The technology is still experimental, so we're going to observe the demonstration remotely."

A screen activated.

A researcher appeared on the monitor.

"Good morning, Midtown students."

The researcher began explaining the device.

Ben watched carefully.

The design was primitive.

Very primitive.

The energy conversion efficiency was terrible.

The containment system was worse.

Ben could improve it in minutes.

But something else caught his attention.

The energy signature.

Ben's eyes narrowed.

That isn't normal electricity.

He quietly activated a function in his Omnitrix.

The device scanned the energy source.

Nothing.

Ben frowned.

He tried again.

The Omnitrix flashed.

For half a second, the display showed an unfamiliar symbol.

Then it disappeared.

Ben froze.

What was that?

Peter noticed.

"Everything okay?"

Ben looked at him.

"Yeah."

The researcher continued the demonstration.

The machine began powering up.

A low hum filled the classroom.

Then—

The lights flickered.

Ben immediately became alert.

The Omnitrix vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

Then three times.

Ben looked down.

The device was glowing.

Not green.

Something else.

A thin white light appeared around the edges.

Ben's eyes widened.

What the hell?

The machine on the screen suddenly overloaded.

The classroom lights went out.

Students screamed.

The screen turned black.

Then every electronic device in the classroom shut down.

Silence.

A second later—

BOOM!

The laboratory windows shook.

Something Is Wrong

Students began shouting.

The teacher tried to calm everyone down.

"Everyone remain seated!"

Ben didn't move.

His attention was fixed on the Omnitrix.

The device was displaying a symbol he had never seen before.

A circular shape.

Inside it was a strange geometric pattern.

Ben tried to access it.

The interface rejected him.

He tried again.

Rejected.

A message appeared.

UNAUTHORIZED EVOLUTION STATE.

Ben's eyes widened.

"What?"

Peter looked at him.

"What did you say?"

"Nothing."

Ben quickly covered the Omnitrix with his sleeve.

Another vibration.

This time, he felt something.

A pulse.

Like the Omnitrix was communicating directly with him.

Not through words.

Through instinct.

Ben suddenly understood.

Something nearby was affecting it.

Something was interfering with its systems.

And whatever that thing was—

It wasn't ordinary technology.

Ben stood.

"Peter."

Peter looked at him.

"Yeah?"

"I need to check something."

"Now?"

"Now."

Ben walked toward the door.

Peter followed.

"Where are you going?"

"Bathroom."

Peter blinked.

"Why?"

"Because I suddenly really need to use the bathroom."

Peter stared at him.

"You're weird."

"So I've been told."

The Hallway

Ben walked quickly.

He could feel the Omnitrix reacting more strongly with every step.

The hallway lights were flickering.

Emergency alarms had begun.

Students were being directed toward exits.

Ben turned a corner.

The Omnitrix suddenly stopped vibrating.

Ben froze.

He looked around.

Nothing.

Then—

A faint sound.

Click.

Ben looked toward the end of the hallway.

A maintenance door.

The door was slightly open.

Ben approached it.

He could sense something behind it.

Energy.

But not electrical.

Not magical.

Something in between.

He opened the door.

Inside was a small maintenance room.

Nothing unusual.

Except for one thing.

A black metallic device was sitting on the floor.

Ben stared at it.

"What are you?"

The device suddenly activated.

A red light appeared.

Ben's Omnitrix responded.

The green symbol turned white.

Ben stepped back.

"Okay."

The device released a pulse.

Ben felt his entire body tense.

The Omnitrix began scanning.

A message appeared.

UNKNOWN ENERGY SOURCE DETECTED.

ANALYZING.

Ben's eyes widened.

"Don't."

The scan continued.

ANALYSIS COMPLETE.

PATTERN STORED.

Ben stared at the screen.

"What did you just do?"

The device suddenly collapsed.

The red light disappeared.

The Omnitrix returned to normal.

Ben stood there in silence.

Something had just been added to the Omnitrix.

A new energy pattern.

And he had no idea what it was.

Peter

"Ben?"

Ben turned around.

Peter stood in the doorway.

Ben immediately hid the device under his jacket.

"What are you doing here?"

Peter looked suspicious.

"I could ask you the same thing."

"I got lost."

Peter stared at him.

"You're in a maintenance room."

"Exactly."

"That's not convincing."

Ben smiled.

"You caught me."

Peter crossed his arms.

"What's that?"

"What?"

"The thing you're hiding."

Ben paused.

Peter took a step closer.

Ben considered lying.

Then he noticed something.

Peter's body language.

His heightened awareness.

The way he had reacted to the explosion.

The way his eyes kept moving.

The way he seemed far more alert than an ordinary teenager should be.

Ben smiled internally.

Interesting.

"Just a piece of technology."

Peter looked at him.

"Why does it look like alien technology?"

Ben's smile disappeared.

"Why would you say alien?"

Peter froze.

Ben froze.

For several seconds, they stared at each other.

Peter finally looked away.

"I don't know."

Ben smiled.

"Neither do I."

Peter looked back.

Something unspoken passed between them.

Neither trusted the other enough to reveal everything.

But both understood something.

They weren't ordinary teenagers.

The Incident

The school was evacuated.

Police cars arrived.

Fire trucks followed.

News reporters gathered outside.

Ben stood among the students.

Alfred arrived within minutes.

He approached calmly.

"Master Ben."

"Alfred."

"Are you unharmed?"

"Yes."

"Good."

Ben looked toward the school.

"What happened?"

"Authorities believe there was an electrical malfunction."

Ben shook his head.

"That's not what happened."

"I assumed as much."

Ben lowered his voice.

"The device wasn't from the school."

Alfred's expression became serious.

"Do you know its origin?"

"No."

Ben looked at the Omnitrix.

"But it reacted to it."

"Should I investigate?"

"No."

Alfred looked surprised.

Ben continued.

"I'll handle it."

"Understood."

Ben looked back at the school.

Something had changed.

The first anomaly had appeared.

And it had happened far earlier than he expected.

The Unknown Variable

That night, Ben returned to his private dimension.

Lyra was waiting.

"You found something."

Ben placed the black device on a table.

Lyra immediately examined it.

"I don't recognize this technology."

"Neither do I."

"Then why did the Omnitrix react?"

Ben activated the device.

A holographic projection appeared.

Energy patterns filled the room.

Lyra studied them.

"This is strange."

"How strange?"

"The energy appears to be partially technological."

"Partially?"

"And partially biological."

Ben frowned.

"Biological?"

"Yes."

Ben stared at the hologram.

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

"Because it doesn't behave like biological energy."

Lyra looked at him.

"Perhaps because it isn't biological."

Ben's expression changed.

"What?"

She pointed toward the center of the hologram.

"There is another component."

Ben zoomed in.

A third energy pattern appeared.

It looked almost like a distortion in space.

Ben became completely silent.

"Dimensional."

Lyra nodded.

"Yes."

Ben stared at the device.

Three components.

Technology.

Biology.

Dimensional energy.

His mind began racing.

Someone had created this.

Someone had intentionally combined three completely different systems.

And somehow—

The Omnitrix recognized it.

Ben slowly smiled.

"This is going to be interesting."

The Omnitrix Evolves

Ben returned to the laboratory.

He placed the Omnitrix scanner under observation.

"Begin analysis."

The laboratory computers activated.

Thousands of holographic displays appeared.

The Omnitrix opened its internal interface.

For the first time, Ben saw something new.

A section he had never accessed.

EVOLUTION PROTOCOL

Ben stared at the words.

"Evolution protocol?"

Lyra appeared behind him.

"You didn't activate that."

"No."

"Then who did?"

Ben didn't answer.

The system began processing.

NEW ENERGY PATTERN STORED.

ADAPTATION BEGINNING.

Ben watched as the Omnitrix's internal model changed.

A transformation DNA sample appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Not new aliens.

Something different.

The system wasn't adding a species.

It was modifying the way the Omnitrix interacted with existing species.

Ben's heart began beating faster.

The Omnitrix was optimizing itself.

Not simply for the aliens.

For him.

USER POTENTIAL DETECTED.

ADAPTIVE LIMIT: UNKNOWN.

Ben stared at the message.

"Unknown?"

The screen changed.

EVOLUTION PATH: OPEN.

Ben smiled.

"So that's what you've been doing."

Lyra looked at him.

"What?"

"Adapting."

Ben looked at the Omnitrix.

"You've been learning from me."

The device pulsed.

Once.

Ben felt a strange connection.

For a moment, he could almost sense the Omnitrix's thought process.

Not consciousness.

Not exactly.

But something close.

A system capable of understanding what he needed before he consciously knew it himself.

Ben clenched his fist.

"This changes everything."

Peter Parker

The next morning, Ben arrived at school.

The incident had already become the biggest topic in Midtown.

Everyone was talking about it.

Some said it was an accident.

Others claimed it was sabotage.

Some students were already creating conspiracy theories.

Ben ignored them.

He entered the cafeteria.

Peter was sitting with Ned.

Peter looked up.

"Hey."

"Hey."

Ben sat down.

Ned leaned forward.

"So."

Ben looked at him.

"So?"

"You were in the school when everything happened."

"So were you."

"Yeah, but I wasn't in a maintenance room."

Peter looked at Ned.

"Ned."

"What?"

Ben smiled.

"He's right."

Peter sighed.

"Great."

Ben looked at Peter.

"You've been acting strange since yesterday."

Peter froze.

"So have you."

Ben smiled.

"Fair."

Peter lowered his voice.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Are you involved with what happened?"

Ben thought about it.

"No."

Peter studied him.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Peter nodded.

"Okay."

Ben leaned closer.

"But I think someone else is."

Peter's expression changed.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Ben looked around.

"But I intend to find out."

Peter stared at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Peter smiled.

"Let me know if you find anything."

Ben smiled back.

"I will."

A New Beginning

That afternoon, Ben returned home.

He entered his private dimension.

The laboratory was already prepared.

He had built an entire research wing specifically for the Omnitrix.

Hundreds of machines surrounded him.

He stood in the center.

The Omnitrix glowed.

Ben looked at it.

"You're evolving."

The Omnitrix pulsed.

"I don't know where this is going."

Another pulse.

"But I'm not afraid."

Ben smiled.

"Because whatever happens..."

He activated the Omnitrix.

"...I'll figure it out."

The green light filled the laboratory.

But deep within the Omnitrix, something changed.

A new system came online.

Something Ben hadn't programmed.

Something he hadn't wished for.

Something the original Omnitrix had never possessed.

A hidden interface appeared.

ADAPTIVE USER LINK: 1%

Ben didn't notice it.

Not yet.

Outside the dimension, the sun slowly disappeared over New York.

The city entered another ordinary night.

Cars moved through the streets.

People went home.

The news continued reporting on the Midtown incident.

And somewhere far away, someone watched the same reports.

A hand reached toward a screen.

The image of Ben Stuart appeared.

The mysterious figure remained silent.

Then a distorted voice spoke.

"Interesting."

The screen displayed a single image.

The Omnitrix.

"Very interesting."

The screen went dark.

Inside his private dimension, Ben suddenly stopped.

His eyes narrowed.

He felt something.

A presence.

Not inside the room.

Not even inside the dimension.

Something far away.

Watching.

Ben slowly turned around.

Nothing was there.

He looked at the Omnitrix.

Its green symbol was glowing.

But underneath the green—

For a fraction of a second—

A thin white light appeared.

Ben's eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?"

There was no answer.

Only silence.

Ben smiled.

Whatever had just happened at Midtown High was not an isolated incident.

Someone had introduced an unknown variable into his life.

And Ben Stuart had never been good at ignoring mysteries.

He walked toward the laboratory controls.

"Alfred."

A speaker activated.

"Yes, Master Ben?"

"Cancel my plans for tomorrow."

A pause.

"May I ask why?"

Ben looked at the Omnitrix.

"I'm going hunting."

The Omnitrix pulsed.

And somewhere in the vastness of the Marvel Universe—

something answered.
