Chapter 158 - Avengers

By the time Fury returned to the Helicarrier, someone was already waiting for him.

"Sir… Captain is here," Hill informed him, nodding toward the briefing room. Fury acknowledged her with a brief nod and moved toward the room where Steve Rogers was waiting, a file in hand.

Steve remained seated as Fury entered, the file resting on the table.

"You should have left it in the Ocean," Steve said, pointing at the Tesseract image contained in the file.

Fury nodded. "We need it," he replied, following Steve further into the room.

"What's the situation now?" Steve asked.

Fury nodded toward Hill as she fired up the screen in the room. The screen displayed a video of Loki arriving—and then leaving—with the Tesseract.

"Who is he?" Steve asked.

"He's from Asgard," Fury replied.

"Asgard? As in Greek myth… Asgard?" Steve asked, his brow furrowed.

"Not myth," Fury replied. "They're real. Thor, Asgard, Odin—they exist. Thor was here on Earth some time ago. He can use lightning powers and such. Loki is his brother. But even in Asgard, Loki is… rogue. He did something there, and then vanished."

"You all knew this because…?" Steve asked.

"One of our agents went to Asgard to work with Thor, so we learned many things about that place," Fury explained.

"I wish I'd seen that," Steve said, shaking his head in disbelief. Ashgard—the place he had always thought was just myth—was real. And now, after waking up in different age than his own, he was getting more surprises than he could count.

"So, why is Loki after the Tesseract?" Steve asked, adding, "I doubt such gods would need something like this in the first place."

Fury shook his head. "We don't know. All we could do is speculate. It seems he needs it for… spatial control powers. The Tesseract can open portals to distant places. Maybe Loki wants it so he can travel wherever he chooses."

"Still, did we call someone who can tell us more about this?" Fury asked.

Hill chimed in, "He's here."

"Son of a devil," Fury muttered as Alex stepped into the room.

"Woah, I didn't think we'd see an ancient guy here," Alex said entering inside as he saw Steve.

"I would love to examinie your body," Alex said quietly to Steve. He glanced at Steve, careful not to mention the Super Soldier Serum or that Steve was still alive after being frozen all these years. The process he had undergone wasn't scientific Cryo freezing—it was a slow, environmental freezing that should have created sharp ice particles inside his boy that surely would have damaged his organs. Steve's body should have decayed, yet he walked and talked like normal.

All of this can only be due to the Super Soldier Serum in him.

"Alex—or Dr. Alex Morrow—is a doctor, so don't worry about his earlier… comment," Fury added.

Steve nodded, as he indeed felt uneasy when Alex asked to examine his body.

"Alex, do you know why Loki wanted the Tesseract cube?" Fury asked, looking at him.

"Well, I did learn something about the Tesseract in the Asgardian library," Alex said, sitting down in a chair. "In ancient times, when Asgard and Earth were in contact, powerful beings from both worlds interacted. Asgard had the Tesseract cube, which houses the Space Stone—a stone of immense power. Besides controlling space itself, it could open portals to other locations. On Earth, it was protected by a sorcerer supreme, who also had the Eye of Agamotto, containing the Time Stone, which controls time."

"It was during the time when Odin was a warmonger," Alex continued. "He ruled over many lands. When he came to Earth, he met Earth's sorcerer supreme. They fought, and Odin was defeated, leaving the Tesseract cube behind on Earth—where it eventually fell into human hands."

"At the time, the sorcerer supreme didn't want another artifact as powerful in their arsenal. This may have aroused the greed of others, and the organization protecting Earth hid it away to prevent supernatural forces from misusing it. How it eventually ended up in Red Skull's possession, I don't know. Maybe you'll find out someday. Then, after the Captain's time, it returned to S.H.I.E.L.D., and now, it has fallen into Loki's hands."

"Now, as for why Loki wants the Tesseract, there could be two reasons," Alex said. "He is after it just to go somewhere—which I don't think is likely. If that were the case, he could have simply gone there himself. The more probable reason is that he wants to summon someone here, and for that, he needs the Tesseract cube."

Hill interjected, "You said something about stones… what are they?"

"The stones—or rather, the Infinity Stones—are like condensed forms of cosmic energy," Alex explained. "If someone wields one, they can rule over any world they want. But they're so powerful that even I might have trouble just holding one, much less using it."

He continued, "There are six of them. Two you already know: the Space Stone and the Time Stone. Then there's the Power Stone, the Mind Stone, the Soul Stone, and the Reality Stone."

"What about this Sorcerer Supreme you mentioned? Who is he or she, and why don't we call them to help with whatever Loki is planning?" Steve asked, glancing at Fury.

"This is the first time I've heard of such an organization," Fury muttered, looking toward Alex.

"The Sorcerer Supreme is like the title given to the head of a magical order," Alex explained. "They're easy to find—you can locate them at Kamar-Taj, which is in Nepal. If you have the aptitude, you can go there and learn the ancient arts. I was planning to go myself when my schedule allows, to learn the knowledge of ancient Earth magic."

Fury blinked. "So, they're some kind of powerful organization… Operate openly?"

"They do," Alex said. "But its as if some invisible magic working only those withe aptitude to learn it stumble upon it , even if they are in the open."
