Elian frowned deeply, lost in thought.
With Dragonite unable to continue battling, he had all the time he needed to consider his next move carefully.
He wasn't just thinking about why Dragonite's attacks had proven ineffective against Mega Aggron, but also strategizing how to approach the upcoming battle.
Before the referee could remind him, Elian had already slowly reached for a Poké Ball at his waist and released it with deliberate precision.
Silver light burst forth, and from within emerged a massive crimson fireball that descended onto the battlefield.
"Roar!" An earth-shaking roar echoed across the arena as the crimson flames were torn apart by the powerful cry. Sparks flew in every direction, and an orange-red flying dragon materialized before the stunned audience.
It was Charizard!
Though commonly called a dragon, this Pokémon actually possessed Flying and Fire typing.
However, a Pokémon with these attributes would be devastatingly weak to Rock-type moves—taking quadruple damage from such attacks!
Facing Chris's Mega Aggron, it seemed like a single Rock Slide could end the battle immediately.
But in the very next moment, Elian revealed his MEGA bracelet with confident determination.
"MEGA Evolution!" he declared.
Immediately, Charizard became surrounded by brilliant, multicolored light. When the radiant glow finally burst and faded, the orange-red Charizard had transformed dramatically. Its body was now covered in a sleek gray-black coating, while light blue flames danced from both its tail and mouth.
"Roar!!!" Another thunderous roar erupted from the transformed Pokémon, accompanied by a burst of stunning light blue flame.
The Blaze ability had activated!
Charizard possessed two distinct MEGA Evolution paths: Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y.
Elian's Charizard had evolved into Mega Charizard X.
This evolution brought a crucial type change—from Flying and Fire to Dragon and Fire. By losing its Flying typing, Mega Charizard X would no longer suffer quadruple damage from Rock-type moves, reducing the weakness to merely double damage.
In terms of base stats, this form developed both special attack and physical attack in a balanced manner. Its ability had also changed to Tough Claws, which increased the power of contact moves by thirty percent.
In contrast, Mega Charizard Y retained its original Flying and Fire typing but dramatically boosted its special attack capabilities. Additionally, its ability changed to Drought, automatically setting the weather to harsh sunlight upon entering battle. This form could be said to have elevated Fire-type special attacks to their absolute pinnacle.
Observing that Charizard's MEGA Evolution had resulted in Mega Charizard X, Chris immediately understood Elian's strategic thinking.
Elian wasn't certain whether Aggron had actually mastered Wonder Room. So he had sent out a Pokémon with very similar special attack and physical attack stats to test his opponent's capabilities.
As for the type disadvantage... Mega Aggron possessed pure Steel typing. Where exactly was Mega Charizard X at a disadvantage?
"Charizard, Fire Punch!" Elian commanded.
Mega Charizard X locked onto Mega Aggron with intense focus. After completing its MEGA Evolution, it spread its newly transformed wings and launched into action. Its black body rolled toward Mega Aggron like a devastating hurricane, with brilliant light blue flames blazing around its right claw.
"Wonder Room," Chris said with a sharp snap of his fingers, switching back to his preferred battle condition.
Mega Aggron extended its razor-sharp claws and struck at the air with precision. Immediately, what appeared to be a layer of transparent glass covering the entire battlefield shattered into countless pieces.
The telltale pink coloration that distinguished it from Trick Room was clearly visible to all observers. Wonder Room's manifestation tended toward greater transparency, especially after Aggron's extensive training. This subtle difference was precisely why many people had initially doubted the authenticity of Chris's Wonder Room technique.
However, the visual effect created when the barrier shattered was unmistakably obvious to everyone present.
Witnessing this spectacular display, the audience could finally conclude definitively whether Aggron was capable of learning Wonder Room.
"Boom!" Mega Charizard X's Fire Punch connected directly with Mega Aggron's chest, producing a deep, muffled impact sound.
The attack confirmed just how incredibly durable Aggron's steel-plated defense truly was.
"Rock Slide!" Chris immediately launched his counterattack while simultaneously performing an action that left everyone in the audience completely baffled. He canceled Aggron's MEGA Evolution entirely.
"Is it really necessary to give up the benefits of MEGA Evolution just to gain Rock typing?" many spectators wondered aloud, expressing their confusion.
The only logical explanation they could think of for Chris's decision to cancel the MEGA Evolution was to regain Rock typing.
When Mega Aggron reverted to its base form, its typing changed back to Rock and Steel. This would increase the power of Rock-type moves while eliminating the Fire-type weakness that had made it vulnerable.
But surely the substantial base stat increases provided by MEGA Evolution, combined with the Filter ability's damage reduction capabilities, would be more valuable than simply gaining Rock typing?
For most trainers, the answer would be obvious—no comparison at all!
Chris could answer that question without the slightest hesitation.
If other trainers were forced to choose between Rock typing and MEGA Evolution when facing Mega Charizard X, they would undoubtedly select MEGA Evolution without a moment's doubt.
But for Chris, Rock typing held far greater importance than MEGA Evolution could ever provide.
The reason was simple: Chris carried a special item in his backpack called the Rock Incense!
Rock Incense: When held by a Rock-type Pokémon, all stats are increased by twenty-five percent. When activated, the damage of the next Rock-type move used by the holder is increased by fifty percent. If used to perform certain special techniques, it might summon a terrifying presence.
A twenty-five percent increase to all stats.
This boost was comparable to the overall base stat improvements that Aggron gained through MEGA Evolution, but distributed more evenly across all attributes. Compared to the Rock Incense's benefits, MEGA Evolution only offered slightly higher physical defense and the Filter ability.
When facing Fighting-type and Ground-type moves that would deal quadruple damage, MEGA Evolution would be the preferred choice.
Under normal circumstances, however, Aggron became significantly more powerful when enhanced by the Rock Incense!
"Roar!!"
Dimensional portals tore open in the air above, and golden stone spikes began falling like torrential rain!
"Charizard, Flamethrower!" Now that Wonder Room's existence had been confirmed beyond doubt, Elian, as an Elite trainer, immediately formulated an appropriate counter-strategy!
Mega Charizard X dove down from high in the sky, unleashing brilliant light blue flames through the air. The attack poured mercilessly toward Aggron while the dragon's body simultaneously rushed forward like a black intercontinental missile pursuing its target!
This time, Chris chose not to have Aggron activate Wonder Room again.
There was simply no need for such tactics.
Elian's battle strategy had become transparently obvious—he was using the special attack Flamethrower to suppress from long range, and Mega Charizard X would definitely follow up with physical attacks once it managed to close the distance.
It was a two-pronged approach.
Even if Aggron activated Wonder Room, the strategy would remain unstoppable. The "weakness" in special defense would inevitably be exploited regardless of the room's effects.
However, Chris didn't intend to have Aggron cancel its MEGA Evolution to play defensively like in the previous battle.
What he wanted to do now was launch a devastating offensive!
"Aggron, Z-Move—Continental Crush!" Chris declared with unwavering determination.
