The second night after Jirachi's awakening had arrived.
All the researchers and breeders who had been specially invited to witness this phenomenon were now assembled at the laboratory.
On the morning of the third day, following a thorough review by Chris and Vladimir, the most accomplished Pokémon researchers gained entry to the Laboratory. Among them were more than thirty world-class scientific research celebrities and top-tier breeders.
It was no exaggeration to say that if this group of people were to perish, the fields of Pokémon research and breeding would be set back thirty years.
With everyone in place, the comprehensive study of Jirachi began in earnest.
In truth, Theodore's team had already conducted various tests before the arrival of these world-class talents.
First and foremost, they verified Chris's initial theory.
Cosmic Power was indeed a move that had nothing to do with actual cosmic energy.
Even when hundreds of Minior and Beheeyem used the move "Cosmic Power" on Jirachi, it didn't delay the seven-day countdown that loomed over the Wish Pokémon. The energy required was clearly something different.
As subsequent research teams joined the effort, each bringing their own perspectives from various laboratories around the world, they attempted to define what cosmic energy truly was.
However, each Laboratory maintained its own understanding of cosmic energy based on their previous research.
The only option was to have Jirachi attempt to absorb each proposed energy source one by one.
By the end of that exhaustive day, they had gained absolutely nothing.
During this process, Chris had attached a specialized detector to Jirachi's body to monitor the energy consumption within it in real time with extreme precision. He hoped to use this method to determine exactly what the cosmic energy within Jirachi's body actually was.
On the fourth night of Jirachi's awakening, with exactly three days remaining before it would return to its cocoon of sleep, Chris finally received some promising news.
Professor Vladimir had conducted a horizontal comparison of five Pokémon species: Jirachi, Minior, Beheeyem, Solrock, and Lunatone. He then distinguished the energy within their bodies from that of hundreds of other Pokémon species.
Next, he investigated the energy contained within the devastation wrought by Jirachi's signature move, "Doom Desire."
It was finally confirmed that there existed a special energy that was present only in the five Pokémon species of Jirachi, Minior, Beheeyem, Solrock, and Lunatone, as well as within the destructive power of "Doom Desire."
This energy was most likely the "cosmic energy" they had been searching for.
However, new problems immediately arose.
While the bodies of Minior, Beheeyem, Solrock, and Lunatone did contain cosmic energy, that energy was fundamentally tied to their life force in a way that couldn't be released through moves like Jirachi's Doom Desire.
If someone were to forcibly extract it, it would be tantamount to sacrificing these four types of Pokémon just to sustain Jirachi's awakened state.
Furthermore, assuming that the cosmic energy possessed by Jirachi measured 10,000 units, then the cosmic energy possessed by Pokémon such as Minior measured only 1 unit.
It was truly a drop in the bucket.
If they wanted Jirachi to remain in the world for just seven more days, they would have to sacrifice the lives of 10,000 Minior and similar Pokémon.
Ten thousand wasn't an insurmountable number. If Chris truly wanted to do it, he could capture that many with relative ease.
However, sacrificing the lives of 10,000 Pokémon just to allow Jirachi to survive for seven additional days was unthinkable. Even if Chris were willing to attempt such a thing, Jirachi itself would never agree to it. And what would happen after those seven days passed?
They would need another ten thousand.
That would amount to 520,000 Pokémon per year.
Over ten years, that would be 5.2 million lives.
What a horrifying and murderous crime that would be.
"As a Legendary Pokémon, Jirachi's exclusive move Doom Desire contains cosmic energy," Vladimir said thoughtfully, turning to Chris. "Is it possible that other Legendary Pokémon from outer space also possess cosmic energy when they use their exclusive moves?"
Chris rubbed his chin in contemplation. He had been thinking along the same lines.
If other Legendary Pokémon originating from the cosmos could use their exclusive moves, perhaps Jirachi would be able to absorb the cosmic energy generated by those attacks.
Legendary Pokémon from outer space...
Chris had considered this possibility before.
His mind went to Deoxys, Solgaleo, Lunala, and the great deity of light, Necrozma.
As for the last three, Chris no longer had the luxury of pursuing them at will.
When he had been in the Alola Region previously, he had tried to locate Cosmog, the small nebula Pokémon. After all, if he wanted to enter an Ultra Wormhole to encounter Ultra Beasts, he would need its help.
Unfortunately, he had found nothing.
There were occasional rumors about Ultra Beasts appearing in the real world, but tracking them down was like searching for a needle in a haystack.
That left Deoxys.
The DNA Pokémon had never appeared in reality, and it seemed as though this species didn't exist in this world yet. Most likely, it simply hadn't yet come to Earth to battle with Rayquaza, which meant humans hadn't observed it yet.
That meant he would have to find it through the game system.
Chris hadn't encountered any related tasks so far in his system.
Logically speaking, Deoxys was a Pokémon that appeared in the third generation games, so it should be located somewhere in the Hoenn Region. Yet despite being the Champion of the Hoenn Region, Chris hadn't found any information about it on the Alliance task board.
If there were any clues to be found, he could only start with his previous game strategies and knowledge.
In the Emerald version of the game, the only way to obtain Deoxys was to travel to Birth Island using an item called the "Aurora Ticket," where Deoxys could be encountered.
But it was impossible for Chris to obtain the Aurora Ticket through normal means, because the Aurora Ticket was a gift distribution item from the Pokémon events in his previous world and couldn't be obtained through regular gameplay.
So the question became: was it possible to reach Birth Island without an Aurora Ticket?
Chris contemplated this problem for a long time, then suddenly a memory surfaced.
In the Pokémon games, in addition to the "Aurora Ticket" method available in the Emerald version, there was also the FireRed and LeafGreen version pathway.
Although the method was tied to the same real-world event distribution system, those games had actually marked the location of Birth Island on the map.
Birth Island was located near the Sevii Islands in the Kanto Region.
"I should be able to reach the Sevii Islands," Chris muttered to himself. The Sevii Islands weren't a hidden map location. Players could reach the islands by taking the Seagallop ferry from Vermilion City Harbor.
There was no need for an S.S. Ticket like the one required for the S.S. Anne. He would only need to visit an NPC named "Bill" to obtain a "Tri-Pass." This pass was completely free, with the only requirement being that the trainer had defeated the Indigo League in the Kanto Region.
Chris had already conquered all the Gyms in the Kanto Region and cleared Victory Road.
The only remaining question was whether on the Sevii Islands he would be restricted to only the areas shown on the system map, or if he would be able to freely Surf across the open sea to search for Birth Island.
Simply sitting here pondering wouldn't provide any answers. He needed to go and see for himself!
Chris suddenly stood up from his seat, his eyes sweeping across the entire Laboratory and the assembled researchers.
"Everyone, please continue studying cosmic energy. I need to step out for a while."
Before anyone could ask where he was going or raise any objections, Chris had already called upon Gardevoir.
Using Teleport, he vanished from the Laboratory and reappeared moments later in his manor in the Capital. He sat down on his bed, pulled out his handheld gaming device, and felt a surge of determination.
Deoxys, here I come!
