Ryosuke didn't need to be told twice. He leapt inside.

Mechamaru sat next to him without a word. On the other side, Ito settled into the front seat and started the engine, which purred softly before sliding onto the road.

"So, what's this anomaly about?" Ryosuke asked, leaning back casually against the rear seat.

Ito kept her eyes fixed on the road.

"We've detected cursed energy disturbances in the western industrial zone. Nothing tangible yet, but the intensity of the fluctuations warrants an immediate investigation. Your mission is clear: locate the source, assess the danger, and report back."

From the backseat, Ryosuke let out an impressed whistle. He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees.

"Disturbances, huh? You mean something dangerous?"

"Is a professional team assigned to oversee this mission?" Mechamaru asked in turn.

Ito's sigh broke the brief silence that followed.

"We're short on manpower at the moment. You'll have to handle this alone. However, if the situation becomes uncontrollable, you have explicit authorization to retreat. Don't play useless heroes."

Ryosuke burst out laughing.

"Oh, retreat, sure! You could at least pretend to believe we'd follow that kind of advice. A little test mission for me, right?"

Ito briefly turned her head, her cold eyes meeting his in the rearview mirror. Her face remained impassive, and she said nothing, returning her attention to the road.

They drove on in silence for a while. Ryosuke, distracted, started watching the scenery. The city's busy streets quickly gave way to empty avenues lined with abandoned industrial buildings. The walls were blackened with age, some collapsed, others covered in colorful graffiti.

Eventually, the car stopped before a vast, deserted industrial zone. A tall, rusted gate loomed in front of them, its bars twisted in places. Inside stretched ruined buildings, deserted warehouses, and jagged chimneys, all bathed in a dull, gray light.

Ito cut the engine and stepped out. With a swift motion, she smoothed her suit and turned to the two students climbing out after her.

"Before you begin," she said, eyeing them, "do you know how to summon a curtain?"

Ryosuke raised an eyebrow, an impish smile tugging at his lips.

He snapped his fingers with theatrical flair. A black wave, like a tide of liquid ink, surged from him and spread in an instant, engulfing the entire zone. Within seconds, a curtain of opaque darkness covered the perimeter of the factory, stretching far beyond the crumbling buildings.

Ito's eyebrows lifted slightly, visibly impressed despite herself. She quickly regained composure, her voice neutral again:

"Good. That will do." She adjusted her glasses, then jerked her head toward the car. "I'll wait here. Don't take too long."

Mechamaru had already turned toward the factory.

Ryosuke adjusted his scarf, his smile widening. "Alright then, let's go."

The two students walked up to the rusted gate. Ryosuke kicked it open, making it creak ominously. Before them, the factory loomed in silence, its windows shattered.

"So, Mechamaru, who's going to lead our little duo?" he teased, patting his partner's metal shoulder.

Without a word, Mechamaru stepped through first, his gait mechanical but resolute. Behind him, Ryosuke sighed, though an amused smile played on his lips. He adjusted his scarf, throwing a glance at Mechamaru. "Guess I'll just have to step up, then."

Ryosuke and Mechamaru moved deeper into the abandoned factory. The air was thick, almost heavy—but it wasn't ordinary energy. It was something else, something even a novice would have felt.

Mechamaru, leading the way, stopped abruptly. His rigid shoulders tensed, and he slowly turned his head, as if gauging the invisible atmosphere around them.

"This place…" his mechanical voice murmured. "It reeks of cursed energy."

Behind him, Ryosuke kept strolling casually, hands shoved in his pockets, his scarf swaying lightly behind him. He raised a brow.

"But where are the curses?" he replied, tone relaxed.

Mechamaru slowly turned toward him. "These marks—on the walls, the floor… This looks like a battlefield."

Ryosuke narrowed his eyes, scanning the area. Sure enough, some cracks in the walls seemed unnatural, as if caused by immense force. On the ground, shards of metal and broken glass were scattered everywhere.

Mechamaru pointed to a massive imprint embedded in the concrete. "A clash happened here. That much is obvious."

Ryosuke exhaled loudly, rolling his eyes in exaggerated fashion. "Great. So what, we spend the whole day scouring every corner of this factory until we find something?"

Mechamaru folded his metallic arms. "If you have a better idea, I—"

But before he could finish, he froze. His sensors seemed to lock, as if detecting a major anomaly. His arms twitched slightly loose, and he stood still, staring at his partner.

Suddenly, an overwhelming surge of cursed energy erupted from Ryosuke. It was as if a black tide had risen in an instant, flooding the area with raw, unrelenting power. The very air seemed to bend under the pressure, and the factory walls shuddered faintly, groaning with deep creaks. Debris on the floor scattered like dry leaves, and silence consumed the space.

The phenomenon lasted only three seconds, but it left an indelible mark. When the energy dissipated as quickly as it had come, everything returned to stillness, as if nothing had happened.

Ryosuke stood there, hands still in his pockets, a satisfied smile stretching across his face. "Interesting," he said lightly. "This place isn't as empty as we thought."

Mechamaru, still frozen, struggled to regain his composure.

Amused, Ryosuke strolled casually past him, patting his metallic shoulder as he went. "What, you gonna stand there playing statue? Don't pretend you didn't see this coming. You knew I was strong, didn't you?"

Mechamaru slowly regained control, turning his head toward Ryosuke, though words still failed him.

Ryosuke walked on toward a half-collapsed building. He tugged his scarf a little tighter, adjusting it absentmindedly before glancing back over his shoulder.

"Come on. Let's go say hello to the owner of this place."
