In the course of all this, it seemed as if it had become part of Xavier's duty to stay here and protect the newcomers. He can't leave now, either, and I think he's afraid of what might happen if he were to leave.

So that's what he meant when he said he was doing it for his own sake. But in reality, he wasn't doing this for himself—he was merely offering himself as a sacrifice. I had no idea about this, nor did it occur to me that such a thing had unfolded behind the scenes.

Despite feeling terrible, facing accusations from many people who doubted him, and having other things he wished to do, he didn't run away or abandon this place. It was clear that remaining here would only make him feel more uncomfortable, yet he continued to stay.

And I, who had been saved each time by Xavier—who maintained a cool face and shoulder the entire burden alone—felt so pathetic, didn't I?
