" fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!…" i said over and over again trying not to cry my eyes out from the horrible fate i was given.
"Shhhhhh…you're making too much noise!" The woman said angrily, placing her hand over my mouth.
I contemplated if it was even worth living anymore in this horrible world. But that had to wait as i saw the sun beginning to go down. I quickly sat up even though my body hurts like crazy.
"The sun is going down…" i said in a daze more to myself than to the woman.
"Yes? I can see that.." she said confused as to why I brought it up.
"You don't know? What date is it today? No, how long was the outbreak?" My mind was racing to find answers.
"The outbreak began about a month ago…what don't i know?"
"The infected get more aggressive at night but… that's not my biggest concern."
…
"You are worsening yourself with all this" the woman, ahem I'm sorry. Olivia was her name.
" I know, but it's either my leg or our lives." I replied grunting.
I was moving everything in the bathroom on the second floor. By everything I meant the beds, pillows, anything that could reduce our sound. Hell I even flipped over the bathtub for us to hide under.
While moving, I explained to Olivia why I was so terrified of the night.
"The creatures are evolving…they're becoming stronger, faster and deadlier…we call them volatiles."I said while hauling the rest of the stuff inside the small bathroom.
I had asked her to find anything to cover the windows completely.
She and the children Took some newspapers that was lying around and started covered all of the windows. Wel she and her oldest child James, who was only zeven years old. Her other child jessie was a three-year-old girl.
Though children are often a hindrance in an apocalypse…I can't in good conscience abandon these three. Definitely not when night is approaching in a couple of minutes.
And My Momma didn't raise no coward.
"There…that should be everything…"I said looking at the bathroom. I placed everything I could need inside, Things like food, water, a bed, pillows, sheets and my weapons.
"Alright get everyone inside…now." I said looking at the last bits of sunlight vanishing.
We had turned off every light in the house
Though a little cramped inside, it was still comfortable. The children were placed under the tub as there wasn't enough space for all of us to fit under.
"Good thing the little one's a sleep" I said looking at jessie comfortably sleeping next to her brother. Olivia was sitting on the ground next to them her hand gently going through their hair.
"Yea, it was-"
GHAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!*
An unholy scream was heard throughout the entire city.
"What the fuck was that…"Olivia looked at me scared.
A scream I dreaded not to appear…
It wasn't the normal volatile scream…no it was a night hunter. Which means hiding was useless…
Judging by her reaction, It seemed that this was the first time she heard something like this…which means that this thing just appeared recently.
"Fuck my luck…"
…
Some time passed.
It wasn't quiet…not at all. Gunshots and screams were heard all throughout the night. it seemed that the night hunter was going after larger groups of people.
Hopefully that'll keep that thing away from us.
We were still in the bathroom. I occasionally peeked outside from the small bathroom window. I saw the occasional shadows roaming the streets…and the rooftops.
Hell, I could sometimes even hear something walking on our roof.
As I sat down next to the woman I whispered to her." We don't have enough time…"
"What do you mean not enough time?" She asked quietly and confused.
"…something much worse then the volatiles has appeared…"
"What…"
"We call it the night hunter…it's like an evolved volatile…stronger, faster, better. Its only weakness being UV light and even then…it just weakens the monster for a few seconds."
WHAAAAAAAGGGHHHH*
As if on cue we heard its scream.
This time a lot closer…
I saw her hand tremble and placed my hand on hers.
"It's going to be okay…you and your children are gonna okay, we just need to make it till sunrise…" I whispered reassuringly…well as much as I could, because even I wasn't sure.
…
The night was long and cold.
We didn't make even make a single sound the whole night, hoping that it wouldn't attract something outside.
My anxiety levels were through the roof, but i held it together. The whole night i only heard gunshots and screams…but that wasn't the most scary part.
The occasional silence were far more nerve racking…not knowing what was happening out there.
But we survived.
We managed to survived through the night.
Seeing the first embers of light from the rising sun was euphoric. I was tired…dead tired in fact, but we didn't have time to waste on sleep, at least I don't.
I need to prepare for the next upcoming night.
…
The city was in chaos which was a norm by now. A lot of virals were running around…virals, people who recently turned into a zombie and still have some of their sanity, even if it's just a tiny sliver remaining.
Make no mistake, they aren't going to stop trying to eat you.
Since the virus just leaked a month ago means there are plenty of them are out and about. It's gonna take a while for them to turn into slow moving biters.
The children were still asleep under the tub. James was awake with us for a while before dosing off to sleep next to his little sister. After a couple hours cristel fell asleep.
I quietly and carefully stood up as not to wake the them up, feeling the pain in my leg had decreased. Seems like it healed a little overnight.
quietly pushing the bathroom door open, i went outside.
I looked around making sure there were no zombies who accidentally entered into the house, after that i went to the window.
Looking through the boarded window made my heart skip a beat.
"Damn…everything's just red.."
The streets were bathed in blood.
…
"I need to find UV lights…as much as i can get."
hearing movement behind me, I quickly turned around only to see that it was Olivia.
"What's happening...?" Olivia asked still a little sleepy.
"I'm Scouting out the surroundings… looking for an electronic store that sold UV lights"
"Oh…"
"I know where some stores are but i don't know if they sold UV lights" Olivia said going back to her backpack.
She brought out a map of the city.
There are two stores nearby…one's two blocks away and the other's three blocks away…in the opposite direction.
"Alright…i'll go to closest store nearby, while you guys wait here for me, if I don't return within an hour then you have to find other survivors before night time." I said seriously.
"But your leg is injured…you won't get far, why don't we all just head for the survivor building" Olivia said looking at my leg worriedly.
"Survivor building?" I looked at her confused.
"Yes, in the quarantine zone people were talking about survivors making a camp in a building." She said pointing at a building a little to the south-west.
Oh so that's where the Tower was good to know. I was planning on going there but didn't really know which building it was…what if I accidentally entered a volatiles nest.
"That's way too risky with all the virals roaming about and we have kids with us…we need to move slowly and carefully, more importantly we need to be prepared for night time"
"Besides you Don't have worry about me, i'm much better then last night" i said pulling the bandage off my leg and showing her my leg.
"Huh?" I looked at my leg surprised.
It surprisingly healed overnight, No scars nothing. I don't really know how or why but i didn't care…can't really focus on that right now.
"Impossible…" she said softly and shocked. she suddenly started to touch my legs sending an electricit current through out my body.
"Alright! That's enough touching." I said moving away from her before i had an extra bone popping out.
Picking up a empty back and the kitchen knife. I was ready to venture out into the apocalypse.
"Alright…we need food and lights. I'll see if i can find anything to eat along the way. there were still some canned food in the cupboard so that'll last us for a day or two if we ration it right."
"Hmm hmm…" she nodded seriously.
"And Keep the kids quiet…i'll be back as fast as i can.." i said slowly going to the third floor. Seeing no volitaile waiting to jump on me, I quickly opened a window.
From there i pulled myself up onto the roof of the building. Which was surprisingly easy as I couldn't even do simple pull ups the last time I checked.
It seems that i was stronger…hopefully also faster cause these motherfuckers can run.
