It was clear this wizard didn't know much more – not even a description of the Ambassador. Keeping him was going to be a burden. Letting him go was dangerous to the team. Evan put some ear plugs in the wizard's ears, and a blindfold over his eyes. "We'll be at the bridge in the morning. We can leave him there, tied up. They'll eventually find him. Either way, he is going to be a problem." Offered Evan. "We can't kill him" said McCormick. "It's against the Geneva Convention, as is torturing him." He continued. "First, I wasn't saying 'kill him'. Second – these people, the wizards, are not part of any Geneva Convention. Third, I think if you look, you won't see a mark on our prisoner." Responded Evan. McCormick did look, and was surprised to find nothing. No bruise, no cuts, no marks. He looked at Evan with a crooked eyebrow. "Pressure points. Part of my training." Evan responded.
"Lets quickly talk about these wizards and vampires, then the Ambassador, and your 'training'" said McCormick. "All right, however I was told that the subject of wizards and 'magic', as they call it, falls under the Official State Secrets Act. As you've witnessed magic performed by the wizard(s), they have violated their secrecy law. My….experience is that they don't like that and take the liberty of erasing our memory of whatever event we witnessed." Evan began. "You keep on saying 'your experience', 'your training'." McCormick stated. "My parents were murdered by wizards when I was a kid. Their police or security – they call them Aurors, went about erasing everybody's memories. I was lying under my dead mother's body so they missed me. I ended up growing up in the streets. Then, at CTCRM we encountered some more. Their Aurors tried to erase our memories and my team….resisted. As to my training – in prepping for Royal Marines Commandos, I started training at a martial arts school. The Master instructor took a special interest in me and gave me some specialized training. I am not at liberty to say much more than that." Evan responded. "I see. Ambassador – do you have any information you can share about what is going on?" McCormick asked the Ambassador. "No. I do not know why they would want me, other than somebody does not want me to complete my mission. The betrayal at the negotiating table suggests a security leak somewhere. The fact they shot at us and blew up the helicopter suggests they want me dead." She responded.
"What do we know about the vampires?" McCormick asked. "Vampires are the undead" Evan responded. "They are magical beings that need blood to live. Magical blood is best for them. They are fast. They are eternally pale, and they are sensitive to sunlight. That does not mean they cannot be out in the sun, just that they cannot be in the sun's light for very long. They can be killed by wooden stake to the heart, or decapitation. They do not bleed – shooting them does nothing. Crosses and holy water do nothing – those are just myths. " Evan continued. "How do you know all this?" McCormick asked. "I told you – we came up against magicals during CTCRM. I've been learning as much as I can ever since, in case I come up against them again." Evan responded.
"Next steps?" McCormick asked. "I'll give each of you a wooden stake as part of your pack. Regarding the wizards – their weapon of choice is their wand. Without their wand or wand hand they have difficulty fighting. They can teleport, but typically need their wands to do that. They can also teleport using a device called a portkey – that can be any object spelled to function that way, so render them unconscious, bind them, snap their wands and only then search them. Do not touch anything directly – objects can be poisonous, deadly to non-magicals or portkeys. When fighting a wizard, stay away from any 'laser' lights, or spell lights coming from their wands, especially green ones or crimson red ones. Spells can be dodged, blocked by objects and in some cases, reflected. Wizards can be killed just like any other human. As to what's next, we stick to plan and complete the mission." Evan replied.
Evan handed out wooden stakes to everyone. They continued to 'sail' on until about 0400 (4am), when Evan got a sense of pending danger. He quickly held up his fist followed by a finger on his lips. Then he pushed the 'raft' over to the bank. Before they got off the raft, Evan quietly told the group about his sense of danger. Tristan and Xavier got off first, taking up guard posts. Bremmer and McCormick took the LT's stretcher (and him), then came back for Cross. Last, Evan and the Ambassador got off. Evan's senses were on high. He made sure to invoke all nine Kuji Kiri seals in preparation for battle, and Mu-Shin. He would need every advantage he could get against both vampires and wizards.
They were only about two miles from the bridge, where they would have to abandon the raft anyway, so Bremmer, McCormick and Evan unloaded the equipment and hid them behind a tree. Evan then tapped Tristan and Xavier to remain by the Ambassador's side; he tapped McCormick and pointed him in one direction from which he sensed danger; and Bremmer to another one. He whispered in McCormicks ear "I'm going to take up position on the flank. Make sure your stakes are readily available – don't bother using them on the guys in the robes."
