As he moved off, Evan made sure his sword was also readily available. He hadn't reached the spot he wanted when he 'felt' an incoming apparition and movement. One wooden stake was already flying and his sword already on its downswing when the wizard appeared… and fell apart in two. He heard gunfire erupt from McCormick's and Bremmer's positions – short bursts of fire. Evan 'flowed' through the brush, sometimes jumping, sometimes twirling, slicing with his sword. After 10 seconds there was quiet. Evan stood still and let his senses reach out. He felt the presence of three wizards (including their prisoner) and one vampire. One wizard was next to the Ambassador, one next to McCormick, and one in between them all. Tristin and Xavier appeared to be out – unconscious. The vampire was also next to the Ambassador. He silently maneuvered himself so that the wizard in the middle and the wizard next to McCormick were nearly in one line of fire. Then, Evan evoked RETSU (dimensional control of time and space), fired two rounds at the wizards nearly simultaneously, and 'moved' himself silently and at great speed toward the Ambassador. With his sword out, he was able to cut down both the vampire and the wizard at the same time, with the sword ending up nearly 1 inch from the Ambassador's head. As time returned to normal, the two wizards he shot fell, and the heads of the last remaining wizard and vampire toppled to the ground, the vampire then turning to ash. The Ambassador's eyes crossed as she saw 'Fenix's fierce face appear in front of her with the sword at her nose. She then promptly fainted.
CHAPTER BREAK
McCormick, Fenix and Bremmer held an impromptu status rep: Ambassador, now awake; Tristan and Xavier, in the process of gaining consciousness (Evan had whispered to Dobby to innervate them) – they were otherwise not injured; LT and Cross appeared a bit more responsive – no infections, no fever. McCormick and Fenix scouted their immediate area for additional threats and counted the bodies of 8 wizards and 7 piles of ash, over half as a result of a run-in with Evan.
McCormick conferred with Fenix and they decided it was prudent to leave the area – the gunfire, although short, was bound to draw attention, even at 4 in the morning. They opted to move into the forest and move north two miles – their map indicated there were some residential homes and farm houses to there. Maybe they could find a truck.
So far, they had travelled a total of 45 miles by river, but only 40 linear miles. They found a barn house where they could lie up during the day. The area was highly agricultural. They had about 100 linear miles to go to get to Bosnia. In the mean time they set up a rotating guard schedule. Evan prepared three messages for delivery by Dobby express: one for Hermione, one for the Major, and one for the Commander (of CTCRM).
June 20, 1996. 0645, IFOR. Major Tiff entered his office after breakfast and found another message on his table. "Ducks have landed. Tangos came searching for Mother Hen. Suspect breach." A set of coordinates were included. He looked them up. Looking back at the message, all he found was ash. Operational security and expecting the unexpected, indeed.
June 20, 1996. 0650, CTCRM. The Commander entered his office after breakfast, as usual. What was unusual however, was the white owl sitting on his desk. He looked around the office and did not see any open windows. It was Fenix's owl, he was nearly positive. The owl looked at him with it's big yellow eyes. After a second or two, it shifted it's weight and extended one clawed foot towards him – a note attached. The Commander took the note from the owl, and glanced down at the note. "Commander. I am on mission, and not at liberty to discuss it. However, we encountered friends of V here. Same outcome as before, but thought you should know he is being active here." When he looked up, the owl was gone. Vanished.
June 20, 1996. 7am, Beauxbaton's Academe' de Magik. Hermione came out of her W.C after a shower and prepared to get dressed for class. On top of her neatly folded clothes was a note. Hermione sat down and eagerly read the note – "Thanks for the spell – I was able to remove all the shrapnel. Patients doing fine and show signs of waking soon. Did some night sailing, but will now be enjoying nature for the next week or so. Will update you as I can. You are constantly in my thoughts and heart. XOXO" Hermione was relieved, and worried: Evan was on a mission, away from base, away from support, and away from her. That being said, this is when he was in his element.
June 20, 1996. IFOR. The Major was sitting at his desk contemplating the note, and looking at the map when his phone rang. "Yes" he answered. "Corporal Johansen in the operators office, sir. You have an incoming call from the Commander at CTCRM, sir.". "Put him through" the Major ordered. A moment later, "Commander. Twice in two days!" the Major stated. "Well, Major, yesterday you called me. Today, the shoe is on the other foot." "Yes. What can I do for you Commander?" he asked. "Your mission. I got a message. It was from Fenix. He indicated he was not at liberty to discuss the mission, but that an old nemesis, one the Crown has ordered eliminated, is apparently involved. This, of course, falls under some of those State secrets we discussed yesterday." The Commander responded. "I got a message as well, not 10-15 minutes ago. It appeared on my desk, and after I read it, it turned to ash." The Major replied. "Fenix must be very concerned about security." The Commander responded. "He implied they were betrayed from near get go" said the Major. "Major, what else can you tell me? As this involves this 'old nemesis', I must inform the PM and the Queen." "Set up a meeting with the PM and the Queen, you and me, and I'll fill you in then" said the Major. "All right, Major. I will try to get one set up for today – it is an urgent matter." The Commander replied, then hung up.
