Chapter 112 - Blood and Betrayal

June 20, 1996. Office of the PM, 2:00pm. "Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for taking the time to see me." said the Commander. "Commander." "We have a somewhat urgent situation." Began the Commander. "Continue, please." Responded Minister Major. "Do you remember Midshipman Fenix?" the Commander asked. "I do. It's kind of hard to forget a guy dressed up as the Queen." "He completed CTCRM training and opted to serve at IFOR. He's one of Major Tiff's soldiers." Responded the Commander. "OK" "He's on mission. The Major is unable to fill me in on the details – it's top secret." Said the Commander. "OK. Why is this urgent?" the PM asked. "The mission went bust – they have injured. Their team is hoofing it back." "And how do you know all this?" asked the PM. "We think Fenix is sending us messages. The Major's are typically coded and not signed. I only got one message, this morning – it only stated that he was OK, but had encountered some wizards. I called the Major to see what he could tell me of the mission before talking with you and Her Majesty. The problem is I don't believe the Major is clued in to the wizarding side of things, and I wanted to clear it with you. He recommended I get with you and then call him. Sir, if Voldemort is involved, the Major needs to know. We need to know what Voldemort is up to, and Fenix may be the key to that." "OK, Commander. Let's call the Queen, then we'll call the Major," Replied the PM. A few minutes later….

"IFOR. Corporal Johansen. How can I help you." "Corporal. This is Commander Green of the CTCRM. Major Tiff is expecting my call." "I'll put you straight through, sir." A moment later the Major answered. "Commander Green" "Major. I am here with Prime Minister Major." "Prime Minister. How can I help you?" the Major asked. "The Commander tells me you have a soldier, Midshipman Fenix?" the PM began. "Yes, sir." "He tells me he is currently on a secret mission, the mission went south – there were wounded, and they are currently making their way back to base. Is this correct?" "Yes, sir. You are aware of the nature of the mission, sir." "I am, Major. I further understand that somehow you have received communications from the team. If the mission was secret and radio silence was imposed, how did they contact you?" asked the PM. "Well, sir – first contact was via phone. We are not sure who initiated the contact, only that seven of the team plus the Ambassador survived whatever conflict occurred, that they were betrayed, and that they were on the way back. The next morning I found a note on my desk indicating they were going by water, probably the Junza Morava River, and their coordinates. The note was unsigned. That is when I called the Commander. This morning I found another message on my desk that they were back on land, and their new coordinates. Then the Commander called me." Responded the Major.

"Major. You have experienced some of the weird things that happen around Midshipman Fenix. What you don't know is that he has had some…..lets say extraordinary and out-of-the box training. He started about six months before starting CTCRM, and has been training ever since. During CTCRM training, Midshipman Fenix in particular, and his team in collaboration, combated some…..unusual domestic terrorists. Major. You have undoubtedly heard the word 'magic' before. Do you believe real magic exists?" asked the Commander. "Magic? Hocus pocus type of magic?" inquired the Major. "Not the performer kind of magic. Real magic – where a wizard or witch, uses a wand and spell to make things happen; to kill or to transform. Where giants and the boogie man are real. That kind of magic." Replied the Commander. "Funnily enough, I am." Replied the Major. "Then I suspect we are in similar, let's say, family situations?" the Commander responded. "Yes, I imagine so." Said the Major. "Then I imagine you are familiar with the name Voldemort?" asked the Commander. "Yes, sir." "Fenix, his CTCRM team, and my Readiness Units encountered his Death Eaters several times during training. Major – Fenix's message to me this morning mentioned their team was attacked by Death Eaters. He further intimated the outcome was the same as our last encounters with them – they were all killed. " "OK. How does this impact the mission?" asked the Major. "I'm not sure – why is Voldemort involved? How did he know where this talk was taking place? Why are they after the team? What do they hope to accomplish? I think those are all important questions. Only the team can shed some light on those questions, and given their likely rate of advance, it might take a week to 10 days before we can get some of those answers. I do have however, in my possession a means of secure communication with Fenix, so we might be able to hear some of those answers sooner." Said the Commander. "How secure? And for how long have you had it?" asked the Major. "It's a one-of-a-kind communication device. I highly doubt there is any way to intercept this line of communication. As for how long – since he doesn't have a telephone and I had difficulty contacting him in the most stressful of times." "And despite you having that communicator, why would he contact you with a note?" asked the Major. "I imagine to maintain security – using magical devices in front of non-magicals is not allowed." Responded the Commander. "What's the range on this communicator" asked the Major. "Apparently, unlimited." Replied the Commander. "Let's try it out then" said the Major.
