Davis' head snapped to her face, his eyes widened but slowly dimmed as he met her gaze, probing and doubtful, though her words "I Remember!" continually echoed in Davis' ear even long after she had spoken.
"Babe," his voice trembled, "are you being serious?" he asked.
Jessica only nodded, her eyes stung; she had hoped and prayed earnestly for this moment, and experiencing it now left her with mixed emotions swirling in her heart.
She felt relief wash over her, and yet another sense of responsibility pressing against her.
While trapped in her thoughts, Davis pulled her into a tight hug.
"That's great." His voice cracked as he repeated "That's great."
But the next moment, he felt a sense of guilt wash over him. Slowly, he pulled away from her, his head hung low and his gaze lowered. "I wasn't there to protect you."
He took a deep breath. "I'm sorry," he murmured.
Jessica stared at him, stumped as she blinked her eyes. "Are you… being… serious?" she stuttered.
